MOT Wednesday :-(

Featured Replies

As above

I'm not sure if I am the only one, but does anyone else sit worrying when their car is in for it's MOT?

Every car I have over owned alway comes back with an advisory, usually the brakes corroding. No idea why maybe the sea air from living and working on the coast but doubtful or maybe just fussy testers. I have tried numerous garages but there is always an advisors issued.

Due to this I sit and worry until the garage calls and tells me the results.

Is there anything I should worry about on the octy? It's 58 plate 30k FSH from skoda and timing belt water pump replaced after 4 years too. So to me it's in excellent mechanical order...I hate getting the MOT but at the same time im glad we have such a law

Can't say it generally bothers me - I tend to assume its all fine and then either panic if it's loads or think "not too bad" if it's less.

Don't think I've ever MOT'd and Octy that hasn't come back with a CV boot replacement though - and that's at main dealer and independent.......

Not to fussed about putting my daily driver through the MOT, although I've not done this since 2008!! On the other hand when putting my old kit car and now my 21 year old Nova through the MOT I can be found sat at home worrying my ass off. Feel quite sick too, maybe it's the love for these motors.

Not many people realise that their local authority do MOT tests at their workshops, and as they dont carry out repairs, they dont tell you work needs doing when it doesnt, which i suspect some garages do!!

Yeah our local council has a garage but it looks like a real dive of a place to be honest. I'm using a local garage Wallace performance they have a good reputation around Aberdeen and a guy at work uses them a lot and has had no bother.

CV I know are often replaced at MOTs they are cheap and cheerful. I'm more worried about the brakes or suspension failing thats when it becomes expensive and the oh I've been driving around with dodgy brakes at 70mph ;-)

As long as the car seems fine then I don't worry too much. I tend to get the car serviced before it's MOT'd so things get sorted before the test. My indy is pretty good at pointing out any issues that might be best done.

My Octy is an 07 with61k on the clock and it's sailed through every MOT so far. I've had advisories but they've only ever been for consumables like tyres and brakes. If anything the emissions have gone down every year not up.

I've taken to doing my own over the last couple of years, it failed last time.

Like an expecting father pacing in the waiting room.

Generally its for no reason as car flies through. Really dreading December for the Combi's first MOT.

Car dropped off tonight. The guy at Wallace performance was very good and polite said he will call if anything needs attention. Fingers crossed.

Update

The car failed for head light beam pattern, front wiper blades and my perking permit stuck on the window. Never thought to remove it lol.

Can't complain about the result

Not unusual

Blimey get some new ones yourself unless you know they're not going to rip you off

Well, what can I say :D

Wiper blades and the likes of failed bulbs are obvious issues I have to say. Always check those yourself before the test, so you'll know they will pass.

Headlight beam they should be able to sort for you and then re-test while it's still with them, surely?

My 2004 mk1 Octy L&K with 117k miles passed today (skoda dealer too). Very pleased and now the new owner can collect and drive away with confidence.

I always put it through the MoT and see what it fails on before doing any work, beyond the obvious of bulbs, wipers, tyres and screenwash.

Otherwise I find I replace half the car before the MoT needlessly!

Well the total bill was 90 bucks I opted for Bosch wiper blades at nearly 40 quid ad the service from the guys was exceptional. Everything was sorted on the spot and Car was ready by 11am.

Thanks Wallace Perfomance, Aberdeen.

I knew my wiper blades were worn before I took my Octavia in for it's MOT last week as they'd started to judder and smear a lot more than usual.

When I visually inspected them I couldn't tell visually that they were past their best as they are 'aero' blades and not the usual metal framed blades. It's easy to tell when the old metal blades were finished as the rubber would split at the ends.

The MOT tester lifted them off the screen and ran his finger along them. I knew that they were about done and due for replacement but it wasn't mentioned, even as an advisory.

How do you check if the new aero blades are worn?

By washing the screen and seeing if they smear or miss bits - I thought they were supposed to do that as well as the run the fingers along bit?

I was sat in the car operating the lights and wipers whilst he stood in front checking them, we were too busy laughing at how good a job the headlight washers did at drenching me even though I was in the car but with the window down.

I think he knew it was coming and set me up, he therefore may well have been checking the swept area of windscreen whilst I was busy wiping my face!!

LOL - can you tell from the outside if they are smearing?

Usually look on advisories as a sign that tester is covering his ass. Especially when I get one like- "exhaust heat shield corroded", when it's a double skinned exhaust with no heat shield. Or another like discs worn. Yep worn halfway down. Maz =22,min=19 mm.I'd checked these at 20.5. He was confusing the outer bit not in contact with the pads with wear. Or pads worn. Again that worn that I got another 12k out of them and changed them with at least 4mm on them .

The wiper fault reads something like insufficient clearing surface on offside wiper. Windscreen left with a smear or streaks.

And when did MOT certificates become normal white paper lol

That freaked me out this year as well. And when I said the old certificate was on the passenger seat I was told 'don't need that anymore, all on the database'

Wow - VOSA have gone hi-tech since last year!

So do Ambulance Trusts.

'WYMAS' (now just 'YAS' - Yorkshire Abulance Service) used to have one at Pinderfields Hospital, but it was demolished during the building of the new Hospital.

T'was used by a lot of Hosptal staff (for servicing, MoT tests, etc), as you could drop vehicles off before work, push keys through office letterbox & collect after work (SWMBO & myself included)

Plus - their main work was on the 'Drunkmobiles', so got paid anyway, hence there wasn't any suspicion that they'd find extra work to help bump up the weeks taking.

Then, upon demolition, they opened up in an industrial estate not too far from where we lives, so we still used them. Sadly that's shut now & all repairs/servicing are carried out a central depot (so I'm told)

There was a time when the Co-op used to do MOTs and servicing as well, at their depot that they ran the milk floats out of!

They now use those depots to store dead bodies lol
