Thinking of getting a Peugeot 407 coupe 2.7 V6 HDI for a couple of years until the new Octy Vrs comes out. My bus has 500,000kms on it, and I don't think it's going to last much longer. Drove the Peugeot yesterday (GT spec) my god it has some grunt and the JBL sound system is something to behold.

2006 model for 7500 euro.

Any thoughts??

The JBL system is incredible! My friends got the 3.0 v6 petrol, double glazed windows, xenons, satnav, white leather, metallic blue, dynamic magnetic dampers, heated seats, climate control...list goes on!

for the kit, it's pretty good! I'd have one if it was slightly smaller!

I am always amazed when I see this specced on a car - but Double Glazed windows? Really?

How many miles on the pug?

TBH although they have a reputation for dodgy electrics, overal, my four previous peugeots have been much more reliable than my one previous skoda. I'm hoping my current skoda will restore the balance a bit.

I'm also not so sure I'd want to go from such a car back to an octavia but it's up to you I guess. As for alternatives, I quite like the Passat cc although I've only say in one and didn't get so far as a test drive......

I would add that my dad has a 'normal' 407 an that the one problem he has had was with the tyre pressure monitors which are apparently often damaged (particularly when having a tyre changed) and cost a lot to replace. His Peugeot dealer suggested that many people pay to have all four removed and then coded out instead of having them continually replaced.

It's the Jag diesel engine in that isn't it? French electrics would put me off unless you can get some sort of warranty for it. Lots of toys just means more to go wrong. And the cheese eaters aren't good on fiddly details. Pug used to charge like it was a Merc dealer, don't know if they've got more realistic in the last few years.

My mate got his TPM sensors removed and taken off the on board computer. But apart from that,

regarding the double glazing yeah, it's a layer on inside (inside I think) of the basic window so when you get in it, it's amazingly quiet. No rattles, nice aluminium touches, electric seats, auto dim mirrors, etc etc etc!

If you get a good 6-1year warranty I wouldn't worry so much because it's only covering you for a while isn't it! :)

Mike's got a good point! :)

That's a nice car that pug.

It all depends on how much you're going have to spend on the Octy.

If it's a few hundred there is little point.

If there is a few K, then it's time to go, but you have to be careful your temporary motor doesn't bring additional costs with it.

Peugeot = Tripe

Sorry, can't agree.

+1, my 1999 Peugeot 306 still had lots of life left in it when I got rid at 155K, no rust and no failures in 12 years.

Without turning this into a Peugeot enthusiasts' forum, I'd also add that my family have also enjoyed trouble free motoring in pugs. At one point when I moved back home for a while there were four on the drive and between me, dad, mum and brother we have had in the last ten years:

305 (e reg owned for nearly 20 years)

3 x 106s (N R and R reg)

205 (C reg)

2 x 206 (y and 52)

206cc (52)

306 ®

306 cabriolet (y I think)

406 (T)

407 (56)

607 (I forget the year)

Of the above none of them have suffered a £2000 repair bill like my last octavia did. In fact the only real trouble came from my brother's 306 cab which wasn't looked after, and the 52 plate 206 which is still in use but has an infrequent but unnerving habit where the rev counter and speedo drop to nil for a few seconds whilst driving then go back to normal.

The Customer care from the dealers was better and pug head office were light years ahead of skoda UK. I had a warranty issue on the wife's 206cc for replacement roof seals and there was glue residue left behind. I mentioned this on a customer care call and within an hour the dealer principal phoned me offering to send a low loader with a courtessy car so they could collect ours, have it fully valetted and returned (which I declined as it happens as I'd already sorted it myself). The dealer told me that they'd had a fax from head office regarding my 'complaint' and that they wanted to do anything possible to put it right.

Compare that to skoda uk who ignored one genuine complaint and effectively told me that a dead aircon compressor and major engine failure on a car with a little over 30k on it were just 'bad luck'

In fairness the 306 was an awesome car, as I was discussing with an Audi tech earlier today.......

granted pre 2000 1.9d and td were very very good, im talking more the current hdi unit.

I too have had many citroens including 3 with hdi's 1x 2.0 and 2x 1.6.

The 2.0 dropped its top pulley, when fixed it then threw its fuel system into the engine, and this was a very very frequent occurrence.

1.6 hdi was alot better, but lost dmf on this too, and then a plethroa of electrical malfunctions on both of them.

Nice to drive and basically reliable (ish) but alot to answer for. Not to mention the sticky back plastic blue peter construction

This was the old girl just before I sold her (155,000 miles, 12 years old).

A sad day :giggle:

Not as good looking as the 407 Coupe though and no where near as much to go wrong!

Sorry, but a BX and a 306 both gave mega miles with far far less problems than either of the VAG I've owned.

They are not tripe, they just have different issues to the VAG cars.

Nothing is fault free and anyone that thinks VAG cars are, may well need a visit to a well known optician.

I'd have to agree with that, my Octavia has given me work to do. BUT any problem it has had it always got me home. My citroens went wrong as often however usually leavi.g me having to call out recovery. I prefer the drive and fix vag option over the dam it I'm stuck again option. I have had many so can't complain too much as I went and got another. I now have a nemo 10 pllate hdi and it has 12k on it, its already needed 2 ball joints and drop links, the sliding doors jammed, then the retaining mech seize. It's needed 2 software updates. The joints and links they did NOT cover in warranty, and the fuel economy is pish. My octy delivers 10mpg more and 30bhp more. Hopeless

Sorry for starting a Pug vs Skud war, I just figured the UK lads would have more experience of the "coupe" model in particular because they where very expensive here in Ireland. The one I am looking at has 100k on it but it still feels rock solid. I am aware of the possible joint /bush/linkage problems and it already has the failed TPM problem.

What my car is worth now is not an issue as I am keeping it, a work colleague is getting it who drives 30kms a day!! I do about 8000kms a month so it really won't last me much longer.

The Peugeot is not a definite purchase, I was just looking for feedback.

I would buy one, I quiet like the look of them.

Double glazed windows are amazing, my Audi has them and it makes the interior so quiet. You only really notice them when you open the side windows and can see the two pieces of glass.

My brothers family are now on their second picasso and third citroen, the first one they owned for 5 years, the second for three years and the current car not that long. First one was still working when sold, only sold it as the interior was falling to bits due to children, second one (first picasso, 2.0HDI) suffered major mechanical failure resulting it being declared a write off, now on another 2.0HDI picasso with a lot less miles on it.

In my skint days I had 2 Citroen Bx's & a Xantia, treated them all to serious abuse & never had any issues to speak of, ran all 3 virtually into the ground. if you find a good independant who knows the car they are cheap as chips to run, The BX19 GTi was also bloody quick for its day. Letting someone else take the initial depreciation hit is the answer then they are stonking value for money

Neighbour had a BX 19 GTI 16v.

Lot of fun and the suspension was great.

The Xantia Activa had an amazing suspension system, really coped well with being thrown all over the place while keeping the car flat.

Think F1 active suspension type system and you're on the right path.

The 407 coupe has electronic dampers. This worries me with the high mileage that I drive but it makes the car very comfortable. The car tax may be the deciding factor (1200 euros in Ireland)
