Can you remove oil filter with spanner?

Featured Replies

This is the first time ive had to change one of these paper element filters. Can you remove the plastic nut with a shifting spanner ok? ive a wide jaw bacho, dont want to twist the plastic though.

Also if putting the car up on the half ramps at the front is the sump angled on this car so it will all drain out if elevated at the front?

cheers for the help

Id advise using a 32mm socket but dont see why an adjustable wont work! just take it easy! As for the oil it will come out fine

Just uncork her and have a cuppa and a biscuit while it drains. Never hurts to give it a bit of angle to help speed things up.

I'd recommend a 32mm socket since you have to tighten the oil filter cover to the correct torque.

I found the only way i could unscrew it without chewing it up was using a chain wrench.

sump plug is at the back of the sump so the angle just aids the draining. As for using a shifter, can't see why it wont work... as long as the handle isnt too big to get caught up in the fan etc

i use a 15" adjustable spanner, just opens wide enough, have always used this method,

it has a "O" ring seal so i just tighten it down so it seats properly then a slight nip to just make sure

I'd think that by using an adjustable spanner you are carrying all the load on only two, instead of six flats - which is not good as its plastic. The best tool will be a hex, and not a bi-hex, socket.

Thought they where 36 mm.
