Shudder DSG gearbox

Featured Replies

Hello,

Has anyone experienced shudder in 1st & 2nd gear? With three or more people on board, my car shudders while shifting from 1st to 2nd and in traffic from 2nd to 3rd gear. Clearly noticeable and annoying. What's the fix? The car is still under warranty.

Hi Billy

Is this related to a manual or DSG gearbox? DSG problems with 7 speed box are well documented everywhere on this site over the last 3 years.

sorry didn't see title so my last reply is rubbish. DSG in large letters!

Anyway quite a few people have experienced this problem over time. One contributor made a suggestion that you should dispose of dsg cars within warranty period just to be sure.

Rather than look for new replies it might be useful to look for documented problems using key words jerkiness, hesitation in conjunction with dsg 7speed etc etc.

My new 1.8 is silky smooth but I was unsure before I bought due to seeing some hard luck stories! I will probably follow the advice to dispose in warranty period.

I dunno what the fix will be but you need to get your complaint in. Likely to be electronics or sensor related I would think rather than mechanical but if it is under warranty all you need to do is make a polite yet firm complaint and stick to your guns thereafter. I assume you could demonstrate the fault easily enough?

Bloody annoying I am sure.

The "fix" as it's still in warranty is to.......take it to the dealer!

"Dispose of DSG before warranty expires"; hmmm, not hugely helpful :hi:

There have been, and continue to be, issues with the DSG boxes however most are attributable to the mechatronic units and get dealt with under warranty. I know of a number of high mileage (100K+) users who’ve had zero issues.

Problems do not appear to have been any more serious than any other manufacturer or vehicle and if one did take the view of amount of warranty claims, perhaps this is related to the fact that they are fitted to all VAG group cars; Audi, Skoda, VW, Seat common sense leads one to suggest that more of them have been sold than anything else out there. This would naturally lead to more warranty claims based on number of unit sold!

The general consensus is that the DSG is the best dual clutch box by a country mile and Borg-Warner kind of knows what they are doing when it comes to transmissions. Because a DSG is more complex than a manual box, the likelihood of issues are higher however ask any VAG mechanic how many synchromesh they replace on manual boxes and I’ll bet it outnumbers issues with DSG units significantly.

As with any forum, people tend to post when they have problems and this skews other reader’s views.

I’m an optimist, therefore I have no doubt SUK will repair / replace the box under warranty. If for some reason you come up against an issue with the dealer, go to another one. If you come up against an issue with SUK, post on here - SUK do monitor these forums and despite what people say, they generally do care about customer service. If all else fails you have recourse in law under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 but based on my experience over the years, it never gets to this stage!

Hope all goes well.

hi can anyone help i have a 1.6 tdi octavia with 7 speed dsg and have had numerous problems 1st ovall new dsg clutch and fly wheel for a judder in second this curred it for about 3 months then i got a different fault a strange noise when changing gear the car was in the garage a month and they finaly changed the box all was well for about 3000 miles now it judders when pulling away and makes a nasty granting noise when downshifting ie coasting upto junction in gear with no throttle please help

Judder between 1st and 2nd gear on slow acceleration and deceleration is well documented 7 speed DSG problem requiring replacement of clutch pack (warranty repair or good will gesture). I had my DSG replaced for a new one in early 2011, before they came up with uprated clutches, and then clutches swapped under warranty about a month ago. Good news is, it fixes the problem, bad news is, many people will tell you after the replacement that the new clutches aren't as creamy smooth as the original ones. Judder is gone but there is a bit of "old 6 speed DSG like" roughness left in downshift. Not sure if as a result of "uprating" or driving around with worn out old clutches does something to DMF or something. It's survivable, don't get me wrong, still fantastic gearbox, but I know what it felt like when the car was new, and both cars I drove after clutch pack replacement felt slightly "rougher".
