Driving in the USA. Anything I should know?

Ref alcohol. Most states you can't carry it in the passenger area. Must be in the boot.

We've had a can of coors lite in the centre console for the last 3 days. :o

We drank it in our room last night so no worries now.

I really should check in here more often.

Got a 3.6 dodge charger in the end. But I'm afraid it's not as fast as my vRS.

Tickled 90 on the interstate once so far but we're mostly on the deserted back roads.

Got lost a few times but sorted ourselves out ok.

Mrs Grr ( My navigator) isn't great with the whole left and right thing.

Drove through St Louis but didn't stay there. It looked proper rough and ghetto like

the way we came in. Next morning on the news we weren't too surprised to hear

about a young mother who cut off her childs head and then killed herself whilst high

on PCP. And another guy who stabbed a man to death over a bag of

cheetos. :o :o :o and that was just on the night we were going to stay there.

Only in America

Yes you should check in more often :giggle: ,but I know it's difficult and the days are too short.Where abouts are you and how are you coping with the left turns ?.

Doing just fine with the driving ;)

Had to engage in a little drag race

along the strip in Las Vegas the day before yesterday but only because I was in the wrong lane :p

Glad to say I won it. Dodge Charger (me) vs big V8 Escalade thingymabob.

Swapped our Charger for a red Ford Mustang convertible today, it felt a fair bit quicker than the Dodge but its hard to say until I get it out on the open road. Pardon the layout of this reply but I am using Mrs Grrs smartphone to post it. Am currently laying on my huge bed in our suite in the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas. This place is right up my street, cool rock memorabilia everywhere, pole dancers, gambling galore and you can even get sextoy roomservice :o I kid you not. Spent a bit of time playing on a drum kit in one of the boutiques here this morning. Very cool indeed. Saw Antonio Fargas on the strip last night. Mrs Grr didn't know who he was bless her... I was going to go over and get a pic with him but the poor guy was over-run so I decided to leave him alone. Off to Cambria tomorrow on the way to San Francisco for a stopover. Then going to spend a day or two in San Fran to see if its somewhere we might want to live. Seriously considering emigrating to the US. Am loving it here.

If you do the "creeping right turn" at a red light, then you must stop completely before creeping. Even though no-one else does.

I didn't stop dead and got pulled over by a motorcycle cop and given an official warning notice. I was pedalling a bike at the time.

Good to hear you are enjoying the trip and you now have USA touring bug as I have.Am I right in guessing that you will be driving the Pacific Coast route to San Francisco ?, if so what a great road with scenery to match.

When in Frisco we found the HOP-ON-HOP OFF tour bus was a good way to see a lot of the city in a short time, and if the Alcatraz trip is fully booked you can get a boat trip around the island and under the Golden Gate bridge from the pier.

Seriously considering moving to the USA? Until you see the minefield that is even applying for a visa. If you do, then do think very very carefully and be prepared for a wait. GB isn't even on the list for favoured status for immigrants anymore. I've great friends in the states and I've even considered a couple of jobs over there - so good luck if you really consider it!

Glad you're enjoying driving. I've stayed in rural New England a couple of times with friends and really enjoyed it. Some of the beautiful countryside was really special.

I spent a summer working there once. That was enough to cure me of any thoughts of moving there. One of my most enduring memories was a supermarket full of freezers with an aisle each marked "breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert".

It was soo hard to get good food.

Greetings again from the US :)

I'm currently up in my room in the Sheraton Universal hotel in Hollywood. Our room is on the 20th floor and overlooks the studios. B)

Me and Mrs grr are visiting the studios in the morning, then we are heading over to LAX airport for our last night on the mainland. We are flying out to Hawaii early on Saturday morning for a nice quiet week after our 4000 plus miles driving around the mainland. We were in San Francisco yesterday and stopped in Big Sur overnight on our way here. Had a lovely long drive along the Pacific coast this morning on Highway 1. Possibly the best driving road I've found since being here. I found myself yearning for a manual gearbox though, the auto box on the Mustang is a bit dopey if I'm honest and it made the driving experience a bit hit and miss at times. Shame, that was a refreshingly twisty stretch of road.

Looking forward to the studio visit tomorrow, especially the Transformers and King Kong rides. More from me when we get to Hawaii.

Till then... Laters

I've always wanted to go to the Hawaiian island plenty of pics and a summery of your vist, Hawaii 5"0"

If you've ever watched Dog, seems it's full of meth heads.

I got a parking ticket in Phoenix for parking facing the on coming traffic, I paid it and got a receipt but when I got home the hire car company took another $150 off my credit card for an un paid fine and admin charges. I had great fun trying to call them to get my money back, which I must add I didn't!

Aloha from Hawaii :)

Just got settled in our "Zen treehouse" in Hale 'Nalo. Its simply gorgeous if I'm honest. Blown away by the natural beauty of where we are staying. I've been for a little walk down to the beach nearby (100 metres away) and its proper paradise stuff. Turquoise waters and white sands, the whole 9 yards. B)

It reminds me of when we went to the Maldives 5 years ago. Am now on hire car number 3, this time we just wanted a compact as we don't expect to do as much mileage here. Their idea of a compact is a Nissan Ultima 2.5s lol. This part of our holiday is more of a self catering section and Mrs grr has just cooked up a lovely bit of pasta with chicken and bacon. I swear if I see another burger anytime soon I'll scream. :D

Body clock is still a bit screwed up after another 3hr time change but I'm sure it will sort itself out after a good nights sleep. The treehouse is beautifully finished and very well equipped, it's pictured on the owners website if anyones interested but I can't post a link as I'm using the wifes smartphone again. Going to buy a small netbook when I get home ready for our next holiday as it would have been very useful on this one. Been to the local Safeway to stock up on groceries already, and apparently I'm making breakfast in the morning. I've just ground up a load of coffee beans ready for the morning so I don't make too much noise when I get up and disturb the other two couples staying here in the ground floor accomodation. I'll post a mahoosive photo thread when I get home once I can get my photos uploaded to photobucket. Yesterday was a particularly special day for me as during our Universal Studios tour the space shuttle Endeavour flew over our heads flanked by a couple of fighter planes. :o I managed to get a couple of pics but my camera isn't particularly good so I'll have to see what I can do to make the pics clearer when I get home. I don't know if it made the news over there but it was BIG news here. I feel very lucky to have seen it. Then, while we were taxi-Ing on the runway at LAX on our way here our plane pulled up right alongside it as it was being lifted onto a giant trailer by about 4 massive cranes ready for the final leg of it's journey which will be by road. Grabbed my camera from the overhead locker and quickly took a few snaps out of the planes window. Both times I managed to photograph it I was lucky enough to be on the outer seat on the tour train and I had a window seat on the flight. Double bonus!!!

I'll get the pics up as soon as I can, I feel very honoured to have seen part of history being made and can't wait to share my good fortune with you lot :) Seeing it fly overhead on the back of the modified jumbo jet id one of the best moments of my life and a true deathbed memory. We also saw a 9/11 parade back on the mainland and were genuinely touched by the solemnity of the event and by how much sadness there still is here over the atrocities. People openly weeping in the street as the local Fire chief read a moving speech and tribute to those who died. It made me see the American people in a different light, that's for sure. Anyway, that's all from me for now. More when I've explored some more. Going to Pearl Harbour in a day or two to see what there is to see there...

Bye for now :)
