Fuel Check 55 mpg

Featured Replies

just returned from Scotland on my first long run.

On the way up I did a brim test to check accuracy of trip computer - it is accurate.

Overall I did 650 miles and got 55 mpg, so pretty good. I found adjusting cruise control for 2500 rpm gave best economy and 75 mph indicated - a good relaxing cruise.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday Phil.

Did you have any issues with the car?

Well done, that's a canny figure.

Which engine and gear box is that with?

Which engine and gear box is that with?

1.9 tdi - 5 speed box

That's about all I can get out of my 2.0pd 140 6 speed, so definitely well done

It is an excellent figure.

Nice to see an honest manually calculated MPG figure from the trusty PD105.

Makes a nice change.

Good work Phil!

Hello Phil,

Good to hear you decent run. I'm getting the same MPG from my Octavia (same engine, bhp & gearbox as yours). I couldn't be happier with it. Had it for just over a year now, and is mainly used on my 100 mile daily commute to and from work, mostly on motorways.

A cracking car!

Looking good Mr Phil. You have prompted me to work out my long drive home, normally gives the best average mpg on a long long open drive.

615 miles drive did it on the one fill up and got 54 litres in after I got there, drive started on cold engine at night 509 mile drive in a oner with short stop on channel tunnel still fairly warm after that then after next leg a 8 hour ferry which left it stone cold again for last leg of 106 miles. Car was heavily loaded down (see pic below) working out MPG real world rather than maxidot which said 53mpg for first 509 miles then last 95 miles on a cold engine mainly poor A roads and B roads came in at 50mpg ish so maxidot can't have been far off (final 11 miles was next morning to refuel it). Cruise control speed was varied threw the different countries at non crazy speeds. Car only had 7600 miles on at start of that drive so may still loosen up more in time.

using a gallon as 4.54 litres, I work that out to be 54/4.54 = 11.9 gallons (rounded up slightly) then 615/11.9 = 51.68 MPG (happy with that for 206bhp)

Pic of car in early hours in Calais before the train. Stock suspension sitting low at back would look better lowered to that level, front slightly raised moved a lot of stuff.

ps. I would not normally run the car to beyond empty normally 1/4 tank then refill but it was doing so darn well considering I had come so far it turned into a sort of Top Gear style challenge for me.

Yes Diesels are still the way to go for economy on long motorway trips. Normally my average is about 46 mpg with mixed urban driving.

I found the cruise control is very effective. This is only the second car I have had with one, and it makes a difference. Speed of course is a strong factor. I found that if you push it up to higher revs, say 3000 rpm it makes a big difference in the economy. Keeping it to 2500 rpm on motorways or setting the cruise to 60 mph on duel carriageways and open roads saves you cash.

I had an event free trip and am getting used to the PD engine - its actually quite refined at higher speeds. I would like to try one of the CR engines for comparison. The last two cars I had were common rail and very smooth, particularly the 406 HDi.

People seem to get incredible results from the VRs diesel engines. Mark took me for a ride in his petrol VRs - phew the power! I may think about some mods later to get a bit more out of mine, but I'm satisfied for the time being.

Glad to hear the trip went well and no further issues. Lets hope you have sorted all the niggles and its now a 100% sorted car that you can enjoy with peace of mind.

To be fair Phil you cant compare a modified 2.0 TFSI to a 1.9 PD105. They are litlerally chalk and cheese. I know you know that but I just wanted to say it for the benefit of anyone reading this. Also trust me you couldnt live with my fuel economy :giggle: Not to mention my car hadnt warmed up so I didnt give it any stick at all. There was at least 50% more to come but I didnt want to scare you

I have had a 4 2.0 HDi's big history of them in the family I had a Xsara LX (1999 90bhp one of early ones to get the HDi), C5 SX (2001 110bhp), 406 GLX (2002 110BHP running at 145bhp mint) and a stop gap for moving to Holland when I sold Fabia VRS a 406 L (2000 90bhp estate) My record in the 406 GLX from filling it to filling it again was 1045 miles and it was hard work but could easily get 120 miles with the light on.
