Fuel consumption, 2.0Tdi 170 4x4, is mine normal?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a 2.0Tdi 170 4x4 Elegance and was wondering if my recent fuel consumption sounds about right? I've only own it a month but have been surprised by how it appears to drink fuel.

I know I have to take in to account that its a 4x4 so the extra weight makes a difference also being an Elegance there's the extra toy's weight and of course the extra power could also be a factor but I filled it up to the brim and with careful driving I have averaged between 35 - 45 mpg mostly on commuting and short runs, no motorways, which would sound about right.

My problem is I have done 210 miles and I'm only 1 mark short of half tank, does that mpg sound about right for this car.

I bought the 4x4 as a tow car for the extra stability and weight and knew that fuel consumption would be a bit lower but found that when I towed my caravan I struggled to get over 27mpg which was a bit of a surprise as most was on the motorway.

My problem is I fear I am comparing it to my old Superb1 1.9Tdi 130, that would do nearly 450 - 500 miles to the tank on the same driving and average over 30mpg when towing the same caravan.

The one thing with the Superb1 was the fuel gauge was crap, you could do 80miles before the needle moved, 300 miles before half way and then only 150 miles before the light came on, I am hoping that the fuel gauge is better on this car and I might get another 200 miles before the light comes on giving me around 430 miles to the tank.

Does this all sound right or am I driving the 6 speed box wrong?

Cheers all

Sounds fine to me, my uncle has 2.0pd passat 140 bhp, he gets 38-45mpg in town and touches 50-55mpg on a run so for a 4x4 i would say it sounds fair.

The tank you may find has a more even sizing giving you a more even drain rate hopefully, another owner could tell you

6 speed box is like any other box, only change into the next gear when its not going to labour the engine. So the usual gap you leave between 4th and 5th the same rev gap or just a little more should be between 5th and 6th

Sounds about right to me too. I have the 2.0 170 4x4 estate. When I've been driving around town then fill up, the range indicator says about 550 miles. It did much more than that on a tank during our holiday to Cornwall in July.

Typically round town (no A roads) the consumption reading gets to about 45-46mpg, can't recall seeing more with careful driving. I'm still getting used to the car though, as it suggests using 5th gear at 30mph and I'm not used to that!

On a normal motorway/A road run I get ~49mpg, less than sedate about 44mpg, all city as low as mid 30's. These are all maxidot figures though, as I can never be bothered to work out fill to fill actual.

Cheers

Steve

Sounds about right, but if you've only used half a tank, probably a bit early to judge. I've had mine for about 3 weeks and I'm averaging around 45 mpg, with mixed driving. Last night I took a 15 mile drive home (lots of traffic, but moving at a steady pace) and saw 53 mpg average when I got back.

I haven't towed with mine yet, but with a similar engined Yeti my mpg dropped from mid 40's to mid to high 20's when towing, so somewhat in line with what your finding.

You don't say if your car is new or used, these engines certainly improve when they get a few miles on them.

At the end of the day these are a big, luxurious car, with plenty of poke and all the benefits of 4x4, it amazes me that they get anything like this mileage, but I'm old enough to remember when getting 30 to the gallon was an acheivement.

As above, sounds right to me as well. As I understand it you can get 10-15 mpg more if you were to remove and map out the DPF, but have no personnel experience with this. I own a 2wd manual 170 cr superb. on average i see 46 mpg mixed driving and on a recent 250 mile run on motorways got 58mpg. Getting around 150 miles per quater tank.

My Elegance Estate CR170 4x4 has done just over 10,000 in the last 10 months. I tow a heavy caravan and about 1400 of the miles have been clocked up with the caravan on the back. Average ACTUAL fuel consumption, not MAXIDOT, is 39.7 mpg. On a long run without the caravan I get about 45 mpg actual, with the caravan about 26mpg actual. I estimate the MAXIDOT fuel consumption figure is about 15% - 20% out, giving a better figure than the actual.

Mine is averaging 44mpg after 23000 miles, it has gotten a lot better.

During my recent trip to Belgium it was averaging 47mpg for the trip.

Sounds about ok to me also and I've found the fuel gauge to be fairly linear. I tow a 1500kg van. 200 miles down to Kent in July at about 29mpg and 26mpg on the way back in Aug after having MFD recalibrated by Gizmo68 whilst on hols. My fuel economy is now fairly accurate against brim-brim.

Bryanp, I have a March 2012 Superb Elegance Twindoor 170 4x4 2.0 TDi. I tow a caravan (1500 cwt when loaded) and this summer towed through France, Italy, Switzerland with cruise control on 60mph on the motorways and aircon on all the time. The towing element of my holiday was 1500+ miles and like an anorak, I kept a close watch on ACTUAL mpg and cost of diesel. Average mpg with caravan was spot on 27mpg and without the caravan average varies between 42 and 50 depending on traffic conditions, type of journey etc etc. Getting better as time goes by too - not done 7000 miles yet!

I am very pleased with these figures and have never taken much notice of the manufacturers claims. The Superb twos like a dream and of course there's loads of room for everything!

Watch out for diesel prices in Switzerland - astronomical!!!! Anyone want a vignette?

I have driven the 2.0Tdi 170 4x4 combi for the last six months over three different commutes to work and the on board computer gives me the following mpg.

Commute 1

(50 mile round trip on 'A roads' no stopping as early morning minimal traffic and no junctions or traffic lights)

Steady driving 50-55mph Average between 59-62mpg

Commute 2

(75 mile round trip on 'A roads, B roads, country lanes, dual carriage way)

Average between 48-51mpg

Commute 3

(35 mile round trip crossing major city on the tail end of rush hour taking approximately an hour each way in heavy traffic start stop)

Average between 38-46mpg

Therefore my mpg varies between 38-62 depending on route and time of day.

I tow a caravan (1500 cwt when loaded)

Hope you mean 1500kg. I know the Superb is a good towcar but I think it'd feel a little asthmatic trying to pull 1500cwt.

I recently drove from Aberdeen to NE Spain keeping to 70mph in the UK and 85mph in France and returned 46.3mpg for the trip. I have the 170 Elegance 4x4.

BryanP, Must admit I am disappointed with mine too, Spookily very similar situation, I've got almost the same car and although whilst I don't do any motorway driving i do mostly an 11 to 12 mile trip to work and back on A/B roads and traveling to see relatives and shopping, all short journeys of 4-5 miles, I'm lucky to get more than to 350 miles before the low fuel warning light illuminates, I worked this out to be about 36mpg, I don't do many long distant journeys except when I too tow my caravan and im lucky to hit 27-28mpg. Think problem also is I upgraded from a 1.9Tdi Superb which like you say was brilliant and would hit 450mpg a tank with the same driving and over 30 mpg whilst towing the same caravan. Am I being harsh and is this what to expect from a lot more power and the added 4x4 with its extra weight?

I must add I have tried to drive more conservatively but the problem with this is the DPF doesn't like it and does a regen nearly every month!
