Rust On Boot.

Featured Replies

Lifted my boot up and saw this.

Any ideas why it's rusting there and is there a fix about?

Bit of an odd place for it to start. Is it from condensation ending up puddling around the lights? Don't suppose there's a 'fix' as such, apart from rubbing it down, killing it off and sealing it back up with some fresh paint.

Gaz

Common fault had mine done under Skoda warrenty earlier this year

It has by the look of it been there for a year or two. Is your car a 2002 if yes that would make it outside the ten year anti perforation warranty I think.

The gasket between the lights and boot panel hoods the damp, then the boot corrodes right there.

I had mine done under warranty.

How long is the corrosion warranty as mines a 52 plate!

Just checked it's 10 years the corrosion guarantee. Mines 9 years and 8 months old, will it be covered for that?

it will be covered aslong as it hasnt had any paintwork on the panel and its the original panel. They say they can tell if its original by the depth of the paint???

Although the dealership themselves probably wont be able to check it. Mine had to go to a bodyshop for it.

Totally stupid design - the foam acts as a water trap and the edge of the metal rusts.

So much for VAG "galvanising".

Removing the number plate lamps and soaking the foam seal in anti-corrosion wax should be part of the annual preventative maintenance routine which is sadly so necessary on these cars, due to some really poor design c o c k ups by VAG. Pinch bolts and wiper spindle bearings are some of the others.

Don't waste time or breath with VAG over any corrosion "warranty" - deal with the problem or buy something else.

Hey rotodiesel can you please explain me( because I dont know english so good) what you mean when you said:"pinch bolt"?

What is that?

Tnx for answer.

The pinch bolts are fitted to the front suspension and fix the ball pins of the upper arms to the steering knuckle. They are about 100mm long and are fitted just above the top of the front tyre. They are made from unplated steel and rust solidly in the steel knuckle housing throughout their length. Unless they are taken out annually and greased, they can be very difficult to get out when - inevitably - the vehicle needs new suspension top arms.

If they are kept free, they can be taken out in 5 minutes without jacking up the vehicle.

Generally the corrosion warranty stipulates the corrosion must occur from inside coming out.

We have done a fair few recently on Octavias and the like that have just ended up being rejected by Skoda leaving us out of pocket. It's a fair old procedure to make a paint claim and the dealership unless they have their own bodyshop make nothing out of it.

VAG are really nice people to do business with.

Well ill give it a try, if they won't do it. I'll do it myself.

It is original, if they can wipe paint away with they're fingers :D. That's how I feel in Skoda's paint quality.

The paint warranty course is funny. As they are all multi branded they tell you what Audi and VW will cover and what Skoda won't. Guess the pockets ain't as deep eh? Lol

I'm afraid that as I paid VAG with honestly earned money for one of their products, I don't call the paint warranty "funny". I have other ways to describe it.

In general, VAG paint and bodywork is not bad apart from some early Spanish built Polos which fell apart. We have an Audi A4 and my Superb in the family, both almost the same age. There's nothing to choose between them on bodywork. Both cars have the same power train and other than funky trim, the Audi feels no different to the Superb. The Superb is more carefully assembled and has better panel fits.

Why anyone would pay twice as much for an Audi with the same running gear is absolutely beyond me. Both cars have suffered the same routine design faults - CTS, CV boots etc.- so paying more does not buy better reliability.

Tnx rotodiesel for explanation, now I can prevent damage.

Just had mine done under warranty from Skoda.

The garage I use (SMC Skoda Exeter) I can't fault. They got the work done THEN had I fight with Skoda UK to get THEIR money back.

I also got done under warranty the "rubber / plastic" body work trim just in front of the rear wheels, as that had started to peel away on one side and rust had set in.

I have got a problem with rust that is so obviously coming through from the back of the bonnet just above both headlights on my wife's Seat Toledo (04 plate) in an area you can't easly access, but with an endoscope type camera (which SMC Seat Exeter have got) you can see the rust, but Seat UK will not agree that it is a warranty claim!

Unfortunalty SMC Seat won't do the work on good will and then fight to get the money back. Admittedly it hasn't got a full service history by them but all the important stuff (cambelt, etc) HAS been done by them. Actually no different to my Skoda.

Both VW companies but totally different results on the warranty claim.
