RainX

Featured Replies

So does this mean I have applied it correctly but it's a characteristic of the product? And what about rain-time? Will it behave like that as well or it will be different with rain water?

I would say it's a product characteristic. Plus you're combining low temperatures, frost/ice and a strong concentration screenwash with it. As it's not a nano-tech type coating, I would expect that combination to result in some smearing.

Rain time I would expect it to perform better, but I can't say for sure as I'm not a user of the product.

Thanks, I'll just have to wait and see I guess! It won't be long anyway until it rains again. Just wanted to know If those symptoms indicated that a bad application had taken place so that I could re-apply it now that it's still sunny.

It's possible the product's gone on the screen too thickly, but I'd wait until you have chance to use it properly.

If you do need to re-apply it, you'll need to use some glass polish to remove the first application. Or an application of IPA but I know not everyone carries that in their car-cleaning kit!

I don't even have a car-cleaning kit... :giggle:

Having used both Aquapel and GTechniq, but never Rain-X, I think this to be a mixture of perhaps being applied to keenly together with the combination of slightly frozen screen and washer fluid. Sometimes when I have cleared my slightly frozen screen with the wipers (because it's soft enough to do so) and also tried to assist it by spraying the washers, the resultant combination kind of mushes together and smears across the screen (if that makes sense).

However I do believe that product should still work properly when it rains or in spray. As Wardy says you could re-apply but will need to heavily clean the screen first, something like GTechniq G4 will do the job as will IPA, although the G4 might be more accessible than IPA! Failing that wait until the Rain-X wears off, it doesn't last anywhere near aslong as a sealant type product so may well run out within a few months.

Sorry, but reviving an old post...

OP, you could also try Autobrite Repel. Same sort of products as RainX, G1 and Carlack. I think it's down to personal preference.

I have an A4 and put a coat on the rear window, water does clear when it rains once you hit around 30 mph, leaving visibility very good through the rear...

Thanks for the heads up. I've been using the rain x window cleaner (that's on offer at Asda at the moment) on my side windows, and to be fair it's performing very well.
