4x$ OR RS ?

Featured Replies

This is the question.

After finding out the potential of the IHI Turbos :D:D I thought best put all this 330 BHP through 4 wheels rather than 2. I know the 4X4 is slightly slower and is less powerful as standard. But wouldnt the 330 be better in a 4x4 system ?

Opinions etc as I honestly dunno

330BHP :!: , good god you could almost fly with that much BHP , in fact you don't actually need that much to fly does he :?: :?:

I haven't a clue whether the 4x4's Haldex could cope with 330bhp, let alone the clutch and gearbox. And from your question I am not sure if you understand when the 4x4 is in 4 wheel drive mode - which is almost never. Have a read of the earlier post on Haldex versus Torsen - a primer for 4x4 owners.

Mellow,

Yet there is a tuning company that is doing huge BHP increases. They are still in the final stages of development before "going live" The 330 BHP costs ~

330bhp in a Skoda might just make Jeremy Clarkson develop a bit more respect for the marque! And sorry, I thought you were seriously considering more power, not just dreaming like most of us of what things could be like given a win on the lottery/pools/bingo/school Xmas raffle.

i think a well fettled 4x4 with appropriate engine, suspension, brakes etc. mods could be a pretty awesome car......

I think the bhp would not be the concern, but the torque may be.....

The haldex fitted to the 4x4 octavia is the "single shaft" version, whereas the 225 TT's have a "triple shaft" version, a bit stronger for serious power.

Of course where the limit lies is up to you, I would think anything over 300 lb ft or so would command the triple shaft version, of course that would not be impossible to install.

As for RS vs 4x4, horses for courses, both would require major investment in suspension, brakes etc with a big power mod like that. Guess it would depend on what you were going to use the car for?

The BTCC cars are very fast on track, circa 300bhp and FWD, so an RS would maybe be the best bet for a "track car" or A road and autobahn monster.

Or, if you wanted to build something for B roads etc in the wet then maybe the 4x4 would be a better base, shorter gears, and ride height thats more suited to harsher conditions.

It's all down to the purpose of the car, decide what you want then build a car to suit.

Indeed it does, there was a rumour from the guys at Jabba that the haldex in the Skoda was good for 280ftlbs beofre problems might creep in. It's not the same shaft as the TT and thus slightly weaker (2 splines v 3). I do not know if this is true or if 280 was a wild stab, one way to find out but it's going to take another 2 years.

As to when and where the power is in the haldex system...lordy only knows and to a certain extent 80% of the time I'm not for caring. But I would love to know when I'm pushing on, but then I'd never notice the indicator.

I would say on the Sunday run as an example of conditions likley to invoke a response from the ecu, the 4x4 was active alot. However due to it oh so fluid movement it's very hard to feel it move the power around. I only ever feel the ESP tug at the brakes.

As to power down and RS v 4x4...once your moving I'd say either, however pushing out of road corners I'd prefer to have 4x4, if it were to be a track car, maybe 2wd over the 4x4.

I'm off to Huck's tonight to steal his plans, where's Doh? I need some top notch spy training.
