170 diesel 4x4 engine noise!

Featured Replies

Has anyone experienced any noise from the diesel engine linked to the revs that can only be described as sounding like a cricket under the bonnet that gets louder on acceleration but goes away when the aircon is switched on for a short period of time and is also intermittent.

This is my Second superb combi that has developed this same problem that the dealer thinks might be the high pressure diesel pump breaking down.

Has anyone experience any similar problems with engine noise or diesel pump failure before i take the car back to skoda hoping it will not be off the road for another 4 weeks to fix?

Both cars developed the same fault at about 8500 miles.

Yes my car has a noise that fits your description perfectly, the only difference is that it made the noise straight from the factory.

I already had seen by the dealer twice but they are completely useless at identifying the problem.

Please keep me updated if you find out any more information in regards.

Have had this noise a few odd times, as usual when taken to dealer no sound. I did find that as yourselves turning on the Air Con stopped it instantly. Explained to dealer who said they had not heared it themselves or other reports of this.

The next ime I had this sound when starting up I opened the bonnet and found the noise seemed to come from the Air Con pump area, wife turned on Air Con noise stopped.

This my third Superb never produced nice cold air even on Min temp setting, my other two did, decided to have an Air Con service, the Air Con now blows fridge cold air, had hoped this would also cure the strange noise at times but no luck.

It usually starts on staring up, almost like a stone in the brake back plate, only vehicle not moving, it did before the Air Con service at times start up on the road, but only when Air Con off.

Drive belt tight, (much tighter than I like the possible initial cause) new fluid so lubricant should be o.k. I doubt that there would be any fault codes for this problem as I think it is the mechanical pump bearings.

I will now carry a small tape recorder ready for next time it happens. I am also going to contact Skoda UK as the vehicle is now almost two years old and if it is faulty pump I want it replaced under warranty.

Unlike many members I have had good assistance from Skoda UK.

When my Columbus gave trouble, it gave no fault codes, so was not replaced, I took photos the next time it gave trouble, the unit was replaced right away. No fault with dealer, no fault code so they could not get ok from Skoda to replace. Only problem new Columbus was older than original.

Just out of interest, why do you turn 'aircon' off?

Advice for climate control systems is to leave them permanently on.

Mine does this too. It's not a loud noise, but noticeable if you're not moving and switch the aircon off. I switch it off on cooler days to save fuel. I remember advice along the lines of you should run your aircon for an hour or more once a week to stop it getting 'rusty', so to speak.

If you use climate control how its designed to be used, you set temp you want and system adjusts to keep temp. So it needs the ability to call on cold and hot air. Turning off the aircon will prevent it from doing this and so you are hampering the system.

Personally, I find the Superb's climate control is not the best, but I still prefer to just adjust temp rather than turn aircon on and off, and air speed etc, so as with all other climate controls I've had the aircon button stays on all the time.

Cheers

Steve

Even when aircon is 'off' on VAG cars it's running at 5% to keep the system moving. I keep mine off when the outside ambient temp is below the temperature I want the cabin to be, and I've seen a 4-5 mile improvement in mpg (not breaking news I know). And it's sometimes needed on rainy days to keep the inside of the windscreen clear.

The cabin temperature won't change by turning on/off the aircon, as the climate control regulates things either way, unless it's hotter outside than inside.

As above, the climate control does quite a good job on its own. It has kept my vehicle at the set temperature almost all the summer, if it was needed continuously, there would be no option to turn it off. Used a few times when the car had been parked for a considerable period and got rather hot. Note the A.C. is not very efficient until the engine is at normal operating temperature. More useful in the winter when cold and wet as it works like a dehumidifyer and keeps condensation down.

In over 40 years as an M.V. Tech, now retired, I have not worked on any vehicle that says the A.C. must be on all the time. It is recommended, and it is the the Manual that you use the A.C. once a month to keep the air system clear of bad odours, again if it the A.C. was needed to be on all the time this instruction would not be given.

Have an A.C. service undertaken at least every two years, if you are going to use it continuously more often as the lubricating quality of the fluid will drop, also the pressure on some vehicles does seem to drop quite a lot even with no sign of a fluid leak, even under high test pressures.

As per my own posting re engine noise on my CR170 MY2011, it sounds similar to the noise you are describing and is engine/revs related. Skoda have told me that it is to do with the injector timing. There is a Skoda technical bulletin on it but there is no fix outlined. By the way is there any where you can access the skoda technical bulletins.

With logic like that.....

That's not correct.

For climatronic the manual recommends for all periods of the year..

Set the desired temp. We recommend 22 deg C

Press the AUTO button

Move the air outlet vents 2&3 so that the airflow is directed slightly upwards

So as you can see recommendation is to have AC on all yer round.

I cannot see any reason why one wouldn't have the climate control permanently in use.

My family sometimes just like to have a gale blowing in from the open windows, at those time I turn the climate control off.

I've tried turning the family off instead, but that never works!
