Featured Replies

I'm just wondering does any of ye lads have tips for removing super glue from car paint ? I was trying to apply a small dab of glue to my octvia badge on the boot lid . An a small streak of glue around 2 inches long ran along the paint work an set hard before I noticed . It's kinda dirty looking now :( . Any tips?

loctite super glue remover, works instantly, but you HAVE to remove it and wash it away immediately as soon as it removes the glue as it aint all that good for paint, but lots have done this

Neat acetone breaks down superglue quicker than anything else. But don't hold it there, as it will eventually attack the paint. Of course you can bet that the superglue itself will have attacked the paint (since it bonds) but you'll just have to try your best to polish it out.

Should be able to pick up acetone easy enough from a chemist, or failing that try and find the neatest solution of nail varnish remover that you can find. But it will dullen the lacquer slightly.

Superglue is far from ideal on paint to plastic as well, fyi. Remember, cyanoacrylate isn't a glue in the traditional sense, in that it bonds things together rather than being a sticky layer between two surfaces. Eventually it will harden and crack. You'd be better off using a contact glue (toluene based).

And super glue was a war time invention used to stick American GI's back together to stop them trailing blood ;)

Had this on my old car and did it by a VERY brief wipe with acetone, then about 10 minutes with wd40 on a lint cloth. came off a treat. Just be very careful with acetone or nail varnish remover, as it will attack and soften the clear coat layer very quickly if you leave it. Really it is the fumes of the acetone rather than the liquid itself that does the work, when my boy used to race R/C cars we used to use it to debond the tyres that were superglued to the rims.

Superglue remover or neat acetone

Nail polish removers may discolour the surface. Although SOME nail polish removers contains Acetone (Propanone), they contain other chemicals to remove dye. Acetone is used to synthesize Methyl Methacrylate (superglue) and will also turn it back to the liquid/gel state.
