Superb Buyers Guide/Check List

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I'm off to buy a 2002 Superb Elegance 1.9TDI PD130 on saturday and I was just wondering if you had a list of things to check. I was initally going to get a PD140 2.0TDI but I've been scared off by this forum!

I'm aware of water ingress and creaking suspension but is there anything else?

Anyone know about the long term of relability of a remap on one of these?

I had 1.9tdi 130 04-reg

No major problems ...

I had to change alternator pulley ....it was making funny sound then alternator gone so changed it

Oil changed every 6 months or 6k miles what ever comes first and if you don't mind getting your hands dirty I would advise to clean the intake and egr valve due to diesel sutt build up witch decreases you performance

Apart from that it's a sweet 4door-limo

Yeah I have a had a couple of test drives and they seem every bit as good as a BMW 740i i used to have apart from power!

I'm wondering though if the PD140 thing is a bit hyped because there seems to be loads of cars out there with plenty of miles that haven't exploded yet.

...probably depends on your attitude to playing russian roulette with your wallet.

The Superb's a comfortable cruiser - but I would think even a tired 740 would go round corners better.

welcome and good luck

You'd be surprised, the non sport 740i doesn't even have a rear anti roll bar! The big V8 is constantly trying to throw you into the nearest tree if you press on! I know it's not going to be an exciting drive which is fine I've got 30k+ miles a year to cover for work so fuel economy and comfort are the priorities.

dont even talk about the PD140...

Is there a tool less way to lift the front carpet enough to check for water?

If all the lights and electronics are functioning is it reasonable to assume it's not leaked too badly?

get the car to do a system check

hold the button on the end of the stalk (wipers one) and it will pull up a menu between the speedo and rev counter use the same button to go up or down to the one you want and leave it and see what it comes up with.

won't it then just revert to previous display after a couple of seconds - don't you need to press the button on the underside of the stalk after you've scrolled to the right menu option?

hang on gona look at car lol

lets see if this works click piccy its a video :thumbup:th_WP_20120919_123838Z_zps952c14d0.jpg

Excited about Saturday just hope no one beats me too it!

it dont tell ya huge amount but gives you an idea

oops - got confused on that one

Isn't it odd, how you can do something in the car automatically without even thinking (and I use this quite a bit), but out of the car when you think about it, your memory gets all mixed up - or is that just something that happens with age?

The button on the underside of the stalk swaps between the two consumption records - obviously. lol

There again, if you do press it immediately after scrolling to the menu option it's a tad quicker than waiting that whole eternal second for it to change - or is that just my befuddled brain again

cheers

I don't think there is any (really) useful info in the status section; I believe it is mostly fuel / bulb / washer fluid / etc type warnings (not any of the good stuff you get out of a diagnostic lead).

agree it's not as good as lead but its better than nothing it showed a emissions issue when I bought my car. Just a little bit more ammo when buying a car for a better price

Anyone got a Superb Mk1 PD130 with a FMIC?

Edited by m0gsi

I have a Mk 1 AWX (130). Why in heaven's name would I want to move the charge cooler? Have you done any testing?

rotodiesel.

I was just curious if anyone had done this. It's pretty much essential for big power from a turbocharged engine.

This is devonutopia from this forum, he's running 275bhp from a tdi. Whilst I wouldn't like to go this extreme I'd be tempted by going a little further than a remap.

In the rear passenger compartment, put your hand under the vent cowl in the floor under the front passenger seat. Push your hand right under and have a good feel.

Well it's been like it for a year and as far I am aware it's still going strong. As I said I wouldn't tune my car as much as that but I think his car proves a front mount to be useful on a tuned PD130.

In the rear passenger compartment, put your hand under the vent cowl in the floor under the front passenger seat. Push your hand right under and have a good feel.

If you do this be careful. The bottom edge of the vent cowl is extremely sharp and if you don't hold it up enough when you put your hand under you will probably lose all the skin on your knuckles. I know I forget every time I check and it fricken hurts!
