Clunk when truning left.

Featured Replies

Hi I have a clunk when turning heavy left. It sounds like it is coming from the gearbox area under the floor. I have recently changed the clutch, so had the box out for this. It didn't make the noise before. I've had a crawl/poke/re-torque of everything I can see but to no avail. Is it likely to be the splined driveshaft end (bit which clips into the diff)? I didn't renew the small round clip bits on reassembly. Any ideas?

My first thoughts were of the RH outer CV joint, or a worn engine mount.

Agree with Ken it sounds like a shot outer CV joint.

Thanks alot for your input.. Why do you think it would have started to knock at the same time as I took the gearbox out? I guess I'm paranoid that I've not put something back right!

If it's a clunk and not a low pitch grinding, it is an engine and/or gearbox loose mounting bracket.

Now you have the logic of previous answers, since changing the clutch is related to both.

Expanding, every time someone says "I've got a clunk on lock one way" the thought of the outside wheel outer CV joint for that turn (RH if turning left) will pass though most mechanics' minds.

GIven the clutch change, I was also prepared to consider a worn or loose engine or gearbox mount (but they more usually show up under acceleration and/or braking).

So I'd start by double checking the torque on all the mount bolts, then check for engine movement by hand. If those are all ok, then maybe head back to the CV.
