Nasty banging when wheels spin?

Featured Replies

Anyone know how to stop that horrible banging noise on hard acceleration when the wheels spin? Lower strut braces any good? Feels lke the car is bouncing down the road, not that I'm in the habit of " burning rubber " but when it calls for a quick pull away it does my head in! Cheers

Sounds like play from wishbone bushes letting wheel move back and forth a bit too much, caused by wheel spinning

From a 2010 plate with 15000 miles? That's sounds a bit premature. Cheers for info though I'll have a look.

My car does this, coming off the odd roundabout sometimes its just the one side.

I thought most cars did this, all my last cars didnt like wheelspin

It's called axle tramp.

It's called axle tramp.

Have had this in numerous cars. Its not a fault just a fact of life. If the road is greasy you might not notice it as much as the wheels spin more easily. I used to notice it on dry roads where the diference between the tyres gripping and the spin up point where higher. Not sure if that makes sense. On wet roads the difference between tyres gripping and slipping is much smaller therefore you tend not to get axle tramp so much. In my experience anyway.

Some might use the term 'axle tramp',

others that have vehicles with 'axles' keep the term for when the are actually getting 'axle tramp' on those vehicles.

(What you are getting might well feel like 'Axle Tramp' did, it is not the same tho, really)

'Wheel Hop' is possibly a better term on Front Wheel drive vehicles. JMO

You want to hear the banging or the big bang you can get with the EDL (Electronic Diff Lock) on a Fabia vRS.

Especially if someone goes in and changes the settings on it.

Is it not the TC?

I've always found it to cut in pretty viciously if you're booting it away from a stop.

No not TC, its the wheel bouncing up and down :)

You get Bouncing up & down of wheels as you drive over TC.

Or the effect that TC causes as the Wheels Brake, not brake, brake, not brake, brake, not brake......

just like some EDL effects will give a bang..

Switch off the TC, and see if it is the same .

It'll be the same with the tc on or off, just that with it "on" you wont' get the hop for long before the tc cuts the power.

as has been said, an anti-lift kit would minimise it, in fact any firmer bushing will help plus better dampers (or less grippy tyres!)

If you didn't have axles then the wheels would not be connected to the car!. An axle is a supporting shaft or member on or with which a wheel or a set of wheels revolves.

Well we live and learn, everyday is a school day.

I call that a Drive shaft, Half Shaft or whatever, but you will be right.

They are 'Drive Axles'.

To me , this is an Axle, & with Leafs or Coils you get Axle Tramp,

or now it gets called the same with Modern set ups. 'My Bad'.

'To be correct i should call it a LIve Axle,

& i should stop thinking of Axle Tramp in the old terms of Cart Springs and Solid/LIve Axles.'

Must get used to 'Axle Tramp' and too much welly when its reffering to Front Wheel drivers.

I only get it with the TC / ESP on. I often turn it off when I know I'm going to a junction where I'll need to get out quick. I've driven long enough to give it some whelly and just get a little chirp from the tyres and not a massive smokey chavvish burn out.
