Octavia 1.8 Turbo running badly when cold

Featured Replies

I have Skoda Octavia 2002 1.8 Turbo. When the engine is very cold, like for the first minute I drive it, is it running badly like it is not getting enough fuel or something. After this minute or 2 it runs fine, no problems when it gets hot. Also he can get quite boring when he is running very low on fuel.

The engine light pops up once in a while, put it has been connect to a compurter but shows no useable results.

Any ideas??

Thanks, Stefán.

Get it on vagcom and post up what codes it comes up with, could be a number of things, the fact its just when its cold probably points to the sai system.

first thing I'd be doing is a throttle body clean. I do mine every year.

could also be coolant temp sensor.. as said it needs to go on diagnostics to confirm.

It has be diagnostic few times, most recently it pointed at exhaust sensor, I replaced that but nothing changed.

VRS Mike: How do you clean your throttle body, never done that before...

Never mind about the throttle body, found good DIY here on the chat :)

Running cold will be the secondary air injection system

Ecu light could be blocked fuel filter or coil packs

I have changed the fuel filter, will clean the throttle body as soon as possible and see what happens, but what is sai system that was mentioned on the first post?

Secondary air injection system

Runs for the first 90s and draws extra air through to speed up heating the car up

Not required and can be removed

Causes lumpy running and general annoyance / wheezyness for the first 90's!

If it annoys you that much just sit with engine running for 90's before you take off

Will check all these things, thanks for quick answers

The sai is a common nuisance on the 1.8t

Nothing you can do but remove it

Try a little test in the morning; turn ignition key few times without turn the engine on (on-off-on...), if the symptoms go away then probably your fuel pump is failing.

Sai shouldn't do anything to the running. It is just there to heat the cat. I'd bet £10 it's the throttle body requiring a good clean.

Will try to do that toninight or tomorrow.

But another question, I have intrest of replacing the divertervalve. And what I am looking for instead is vavle that would:

Slighty increase the power

Make the "tisssss" sound

Not risking damaging the turbo

And not way too expensive

The one who looks the best is :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-OCTAVIA-1-8-TURBO-Forge-RECIRCULATION-DUMP-VALVE-/180702798218?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Cars+Year%3A2002%7CCar+Make%3ASkoda%7CModel%3AOctavia&hash=item2a12b9e18a#ht_718wt_699

But this is so expensive, can you give me a hint of anyone else?

No valve will increase power.

If you want a louder tissh noise you're better off with a ebay cold air intake and either a forge valve or a compbrake one

Forge 007p and a induction kit of some sort will make enough tsssh to keep you happy

Thanks for that, I am still so new in all this and have very much to learn, but am pretty sure all of you guys will be some good help.

Do you recomment any one else than K&N filters, someone cheaper? At least it is damm expensive to buy it here to iceland....

And one other thing, with the forge 007p, it is said to keep the external noise to minimum, that doesn't sound like "tisss" to me.....

Basically all you need is a cheap ebay cai and a decent such as k&n filter to put on the end, all it is is an alloy pipe lol

With the standard airbox you can just hear the 007p

With a induction kit it goes tsccchh!! Very loudly indeed! The 1.8t requires a recirculating diverter valve so an extrenal valve is out of the question! And its not needed at all

Have a search on youtube for forge 007p to get an idea for yourself!!

Not sure if you have fixed your cold running issue, but if not I would suggest you replace your temp sensor as this is the part that will drive the ECU to change the fuelling at start up. When that is faulty depending of the fault you could either inject too much fuel or not enough thus the initial starting and drive away is rough. As the car warms up the temp sensor is not needed as such and thus you get normal running. Also when a temp sensor fails you do not always get a ECU code.

At £22 and 5 minutes to replace worth doing. Also the black top sensors are well known for failing and were replaced a few years back with green tops.

hope this helps

Thanks a lot, will also check that out, exactly where is the temp sensor located?

And I also ordered forge 007p valve, next month comes hopefully CAI. :) Will keep you updated with those stuff.

Hi Temp sensor is located under main engine cover to the right side of top of engine

easiest way to replace is leave cable plug attached and remove circlip. You will loose a little water but not much. Then unplug cable and fit new sensor. Job done.

Okey, thanks a lot for good description of that, will try to check all these out next weekend, working so much those days that I have no time for the car...
