dpf regeneration

Featured Replies

How do you know when the dpf is or has been regenerating? i have done 8k miles and have never seen any dash lights or anything to indicate that it is happening.

The warning light only comes on if the car senses that the DPF HAS to have a clean (keep keep the engine above 2K rpm for 10 mins or so). It will do active regens before that happens. The tell tale sign of an active regen is a higher idle speed of around 1K rpm when the engine is hot, usual idle is approx 700 rpm when hot. In the winter the car will idle at 1K rpm until warm. From my experience the 2.0 oil burners seem to regen less than some smaller units like the 1.6 VAG units.

You may also find that you interupt a regen at some time. When this happens you notice a burning smell from the front of the car and the fans continue to run after you turn the engine off. This is completely normal.

I to have never had the light on in 20 months and 15k miles(goes to find a piece of wood)

Even after a recently completed regen the car may.. err.. hum.... a tad with the high temperature caused during the regen (goes to find a piece of wood as well, no DPF light in the last couple of years driving VAG diesels)

Never seen a DPF light on in 50k miles.

It just "does" it on it's own.

One regen while driving and no lights in 23,000 mls

I've been aware of a few regens in 8k miles, I've also interupted a couple too, is this something that I shouldn't do and try and keep the engine running.

Had another interrupted regen this morning when I arrived at work. If the light doesn't come on I assume it's fine just to stop. I've only known they had been happening after I'd parked and heard the fans going.

Had another interrupted regen this morning ....

You say 'another' - I wonder how many, and your mileage? The Waiting List shows that you've had the car for some three-and-a-half months.

Today was the third time I've noticed a regen. Rolled over the 3K mark at the weekend. Today's was at the end of a 20 mile trip.

Used to happen to me when the car was new and being run in. The light didn't come on, just ran noisy and hot when stopped.

The wife came home one day last month (car is 2 1/2 years old and around 27,000 miles) and said "that funny light on the dash came on" she checked the handbook and it was the DPF regeneration light. Came home and told me. I start the car and the light is not on so to be safe go I for a 20 minute ride on the A14 in 4th gear keeping the revs up. No more problems, so didn't think any more about it.

A week later she tells me it's done it again. Now I'm thinking £££ signs. I go out to the car sit in the drivers seat, she is standing in the open door, I turn on the ignition and she says "there it is again". I had not yet started the engine. The light goes out at about the same time as the glo plug light and I start the car. Of course no DPF light. I ask her whether this is what happened before and she says "Yes". I breathed a sigh of relief.

She has been driving the car since new and never noticed it before. :x

So after multiple new batteries, brakes, alternators, lights etc, it was just the power on self test :giggle: , I nearly spat my drink over my PC reading your post, brilliant! Thank you!

When ever it gets colder weather then my Monsters DPF active regen system goes into overdrive; sometimes running a cycle every trip. Dealers looked at it numerous times, SUK have had an input but with no warning lights to date, then it's considered fault free :wonder:

Oh most of my driving consists of 36 mile commutes on country A roads. Love to have the petrol instead but 15k miles a year in a 4x4, is far cheaper in diesel guise, particularly the 110, as in all but SE plus trim, it's cheaper to buy than the TSI 4x4 and holds it's value for longer.
