Wheel Bolts - Lengths

Got myself some nice new alloys for the Octi, went about test fitting and they look pretty nice enough.

Just one thing pointed out by my older brother (Family mechinac for a fair few years) Just said for me to check the length of the wheel bolts as they come out of the alloy. The bolts are 42mm long and the thread is 27mm (Aprox, not on the dot!)

In the steel wheel, they poke about about 20mm of thread, in the alloys, they come out 16mm.

Should I really need an extra 5mm of thred to make it safe? Only asking as I cant find longer bolts. Well, I have found longer (MUCH longer) Which I think will foul the hub by sticking out the otherside.

My mechnal knowlegae is lacking, as its a new car to me. I'm more suited for T-series and mini A-series engines/cars. But hey, thats why such like forums like this exsit. :)

Look at the hub they are bolting into, and I think that even with 16mm they go all the way through.

To the best of my knowledge, VW group vehicles such as the Octavia use the same length threads regardless of steel or aluminium.

On other marques the problem generally was due to people fitting the steel spare in place of a fitted alloy, without using the specially supplied DIFFERENT (shorter) length bolts.

As far as I am aware Skoda do not supply different length bolts for the steel spare, which we specced.

Plus when I bought my Skoda supplied steel rims for winter tyres, different bolts were not mentioned.

So I will be using the ones taken from the Alloy rims.

Cheers

Marcus

I read that 3 turns is sufficient for mass loading but more turns are needed for more stiction so they don't unscrew
