New turbo - low MPG (again, I know, sorry)

Featured Replies

Searched but just can't find threads I've seen before on this issue... So,

Brand new turbo fitted, mpg significantly down.

What's going on...?

Cheers

Down on power?

Is everything connected up correctly?

I felt it down on power on the first half of today's 120 mile blast (I've missed it), but power seems OK now. MPG could never get below 39 before - that was hammering it - now it's mid 30's mpg on a run where it would have been easy mid 40's

I got home the other day and while parked up on tick-over the MPG was dropping points - something it's never done before

It didn't drop mpg on idle before the change

Yeah, if you're on average for the trip - obviously it's going to decrease steadily if you're sat with the engine running. Essentially you're just sat wasting fuel.

I think the lowest I've seen my average trip was 36mpg. That was after thrashing it an idling it for abou 10 minutes. Sounds like there was an issue before the new turbo which has magically disappearered :p

I think decreasing whilst idling is normal as my Octy does this. As said its just sat burning fuel.

Low power plus low(er) mpg... reads like a minor air leak or bust/disconnected vacuum pipe somewhere.

J.

There are several things you could check if work has recently been carried out on your turbo.

-Get it scanned for fault codes

-As mentioned previously, check for a boost leak. Have all the pipes been put back together properly. Perhaps one of the pipe joints has broke.

-Check the MAP Sensor wiring

-Check the MAF

-Is the vacuum to the VNT actuator working correctly

My avg mpg display goes down when idling too, usually at the rate of 0.1mpg every 30 seconds or so. This is normal, fuel is being used and you're going nowhere.

Yeh while idling you are doing 0mpg so it will drop.

Sounds like something has been disturbed while having the new turbo fitted.

Any loud whooshy noises?

Phil
