How to make it louder?

Featured Replies

Which would mean almost every single aftermarket exhaust system, or even a mere muffler, is illegal.

just what I was thinking!! which means the 'non res' Miltek system I had on my last Octy is illegal!!!? lol.. the 'non res' being the centre box removed!!!

Mine is booked in! Will post results in a few weeks when the work has been done. :-)

  • you dont need a remap for the cat back exhaust, only the downpipe

  • No that's the price for someone to do it as everyone else has said, but you do ur own for £2

A couple of pics of the (middle, beneath driver) resonator. Weighs perhaps 4 or 5 kilos and is maybe 40cm long. Straight through, as you can see.

Its packed with baffle material (fibreglass) like a motorcycle exhaust

"Straight through" is not be all and end all for an efficient exhaust system though

Probably see more of a performance increase from losing the 5kgs than the gas flow :)

Straight through's are an mot fail and illegal on road cars aren't they?

Also sure there's a limit for loudness now too, certainly all the local Boyz don't seem to be so loud after getting section 59s

No not at all

Your db figures are in your v5 as already discussed

could you not cheat and use one of those soundaktor things that are in the new ibiza cupra, it may be fake but at least it will sound better to you in the cabin :giggle:

So, is the general consensus here that doing this will cause an MOT fail in the UK?

From watching the videos and hearing the sound, I'm pretty happy that this wont cause any issues in regards to excessive noise and Section 59's.

My Dad had a Vauxhall 101 estate, this had a straight through pipe from manufacture! It used to make a heck of a crack if you revved it hard and then would pop, pop, pop on deceleration.

Crap car though

No , for mots the noise levels are down to the discretion of the tester , they do not measure noise.

De-cats are mot fails as if your car came with one you need it. Basically every car after the early 70's to meet emmissions tests.

Straight through exhausts are not illegal, but there is a sound limit mot testers are advised to test for. Its down to there disgression though so as long as its not stupidly loud you should be fine.

If you are really that worried you could just bolt your old back box back on for testing time.

That's not true either , not all cars need cats even if they had them from new there is no hard and fast rule

Just had this done today. Sounds good. It's equivalent to the sound I had on my old Focus with a sports muffler: more or less quiet in "normal" driving, with a bit more meat under acceleration. Nothing that will upset the noise police, however.

Hey mate...

Who'd you get to do this? What can I expect to pay here in Aus to have this done?

You think it's ok to pass rego etc once the car requires an inspection?

Does it have any drone at regular commute speeds of 60/80/90/110km's?

Local muffler shop in Perth did it. It should cost you 80-100 bucks (hourly rate) plus a bit for pipe, less if you're lucky. I got mine done in stainless steel because the rest of the system is that. If you look in the Polo 6R section of VWWatercooled forum, a lot of blokes in Sydney got this done en masse on their Polos (same car, more or less) at a particular exhaust shop. If you went to the same shop they'd know exactly what to do and wouldn't have to call it a custom job, the way "my" shop did.

As for inspections... I'm not sure. We don't have them in Perth. The only way you'd get a canary here would be for too much noise, and there's no way you'd make that many decibels. Not if all the doof-doof backwards cap blokes in WRX's with baked-bean tin exhausts can get away with it. I'm not sure how thorough they would check under the car in NSW. It's not as obvious as a missing rear muffler, though.

No drone at regular speeds, at least in my opinion. To be honest, I doubt you'd be able to hear anything over wind and/or tyre noise unless with wide throttle settings.

The best sounds are downshifts in manual or sport mode (a few pops and crackles), and distinct cracks with every upshift at 1/2-3/4 throttle (anything more and engine noise drowns it out).

EDIT: Thread mentioned above is here: http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f128/6r-polo-gti-middle-muffler-delete-77214.html

Still thinking about this, local powerflow dealer can do this for 60-70notes apparently, seems money well spent for some better noise as long as the reports of no droning are true!!

What have people done re insurance though? Probably know the answer to my own question, but even though is a change to standard, is it really when everything that interfaces with other parts of the car and things that impact on performance remain unchanged??

Different brands of tyre probably have a greater impact on performance and safety!

Revising an old thread; what are the differences in removing the centre silencer to the rear?

What's the affect if both are removed? I'm really thinking about getting my Fabia lobotomised haha!

It will result in an absolutely massive increase in power and make you TOTALLY irresistible to members of both sexes.

Sign me up!!!! Although I don't need more power because the VRS is already the fastest car on the road.

You are an unusual one

Don't you hate reading something (this thread) an then having an unfounded urge to tamper with the car.

Really liking the idea of silencer removal, cheap and satisfying. Rarely do you get both!

Exactly, hence why I've already got a quote for it :-p just deciding if I want just one or both removed. I really want a meaty sound with the fart noise on the up shifts.

It's definitely something I'm going to look into.

Just need to fit this, RARB, springs and ITG between wedding in May and baby August. Hmm...

Just inquired with my local exhaust specialist, they quoted £150 plus VAT, seems extremely steep compared to what i've been hearing on here.

Yeah that is a little steep. I got quoted £60!

Why not spend a little more and get a custom race cat downpipe. Might not be much louder, but may make the car faster......

Understate - overprove
