Thinking of buying a TDI VRS

Featured Replies

Hi

Can people give me some advice,

I am thinking of buying a vrs tdi in blue any issues I should be aware of?

What sort of MPG does it return?

i get 52mpg from mine, calculated with fuelly as the computer can be quite in accurate!

issues to watch out for are leaking doors, (easy fixed, but can be used to knock price down) noisy dmf, noisy turbo mainly as these can be costly to fix. Also service history showing correct oil has been used is desirable.

had my vrs a year, drive 30 miles to work each way and is the best car ive had. its a great combo of power and being cheap to run!

Mine is on 165,000 miles now. Great car, had it 4 years or so now. I get around 40mpg but thats short commute to work each day and not hanging about too much.

The Blue ones are the SE (Special Edition) which are very nice, although only 1000 were made.

Being a later engine (05-07) people have found they have slightly more power (145-155bhp) compared to the earlier cars, like mine, even if Skoda/VAG say it's the same 130BHP. However watch out as some have a hesitation or stutter. This is caused by the EGR valve.

I have a 2004 vRS and normally get 45-50 mpg. I have occasionally had more (once 57mpg on a 300 mile motorway trip).

hi kevinjwiles,

i've recently bought a silver 06 fabia vrs in feb, afraid to say it but "what a car", economy and power and mine is standard,

i do a regular run 60miles a day and i can do on the M4 60mpg @ 70mph, when refilling tank from empty to full capacity which is 45ltrs so work that out £1.42 per litre, £135 car tax 12month, tyres range from £115-£136 a pair depends on brand,

peeps on this forum are very helpful and have had similar problems, loads of mods, yes check floors rear of front seats, i had a leaky door, common fault, threads on here to resolve, make sure air con works as mine is kaput, couple of hundred to get rectified.

have i sold you one yet, lol. i am impressed with it. took me ages to find one, mileage was a bit high @ 114,000mls but some cars on here lot more than mine still going and the dual mass fly wheel people say this can be a problem. keep an eye out on here for advice.

I've got 2, 04 and a 56 plate but notice no difference what so ever in power.

The 04 has 178k and does 80 miles a day up and down the M1 mostly sat on cruise @ 90 and returns a calculated 48mpg. It is still on it's first clutch, turbo, exhaust and battery so is testament to the longevity that can be had from these cars if plenty of mway miles are in the mix.

Thanks, I am going to look at one this weekend :)

The fuel computer in later vRSs is way out - mine when I bought it was over 20% optimistic - the dealer said it was not fixable and this forum seems to agree.

The calculated MPG for my 2007vRS seems to be lower than my 2004vRS though I don't have a commensurate table for the later car as I have for the former.

Whereas the earlier car achieved on average just over 50mpg, the newer one seems to be about 45mpg...

The Blue ones are the SE (Special Edition) which are very nice, although only 1000 were made.

Only those with leather seats and red calipers!

Anyway I've had mine for 6 months ish, and I love it! Great fuel consumption when I'm not hooning it, and it's like a little rocket when I am :p

Also they sit very nicely on long motorway trips, diesel engine just purrs nicely :)

Don't think, buy!! (The right one of course!)

Brilliant little cars when all things considered.

Had my vRS for about a month now.

I love it.

Mine is a 2006 and I notice the engine stutter and hesitation a little, but not much.

MPG wise as said the computer over reads, but not too bad in mine.

I regularly travel between Truro and Bristol. At 70mph with cruise control on I have had the comp showing 80mpg for the entire journey, with an actually consumption of 72mpg. Return journey was full of traffic and as such average 72mpg over 400 miles. Actually mpg was 67.

On average with in town driving I get about 55mpg.

Cant argue really when I also have 170bhp to play with.

I wasn't aware that the stutter issue was a common one. as mine has been doing that a bit lately.

Something for the garage to have a look at next time i'm there.

Best MPG I have ever managed was 66.8 which is simply fantastic for a powerful little car

Awesome little cars. Stage 1 remap Jabbasport RARB and lower slightly. Then just keep clean and serviced and enjoy.

Has the OP actually driven one yet?

Once he has I suspect the car will sell itself to him.

Just avoid the recently rebuilt number 473. It was in a bad smack back

in January.

I am the OP :) I droove one yesturday but it wasnt sold to me as it wasnt in good nick!

All look reasonable in the adverts. Beware "full service history" since Skoda's schedule is confusing and my belief is that many aren't fully serviced in accordance with the published schedule - even Skoda won't acknowledge this after extensive discussions.

Very high mileage, nice seats which I think are Skoda ones,

Pre-facelift, high mileage, the "seats" photo deliberately (?) avoids showing the high wear parts of the driver's seat, ugly stickers, service history

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item257557ef29

High mileage, modifications complicating insurance (?), non-standard ICE, tiny boot as a consequence, difficult to tell if the front windows have been illegally tinted (may be OK if picture 13 is accurate)

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f1dbb8fa4

Looks OK but price rather strong, cruise control, non-standard ICE

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4abcf65455

OK

http://www.autotrade...age/2?logcode=p

Pre-facelift, fairly early car (check out the long vRS badge), may thus have the early gearbox, reasonable mileage for age, non-standard ICE

http://www.autotrade.../1500?logcode=p

Mileage good but pricey, service history sounds good

Haven't spotted CD changer on any which is strange since I thought it was a commonly taken up option.

Cheers out of all which would you choose or spend more time looking at?

Issue with 2nd from last? Whats bad about early gear box?

Buy mine!!!

Difficult to say really - depends on your priorities. I refused to buy my 2004vRS (bought new) until the dealer suggested and then found an upholsterer willing to do a complete retrim (this was before Skoda offered leather seats). I also really like cruise control which I use every journey (one of the reasons for buying the 2004 car after two SP30s). I'd also value low mileage hence the reason I paid a (hefty) premium to get my present car in 2010 (24k then, 36k now).

The early gearbox had higher ratios so possibly slightly slower in acceleration but quieter and more economical at speed. I'm not allowed to attach anything since they dropped the limit for non-Freedom members so can't attach the full details but mph/1000rpm on earlier cars is 38.03 compared to 32.51 on the later cars - or to look at it another way 5th on the early cars is almost the same as 6th on the later ones. It's not known precisely when the gearbox changed so an 04 might be either - and it's not easy to tell (though the codes on the build sticker might give a clue here - not researched that one). The longer vRS badge points to an early car when they seemed to have used Octavia badges which are naturally longer.

EDIT - typing mistakes!

No issues, they just changed the ratios early on. Most actually prefer the original gearbox, longer so better for cruising at speed.

I've discovered most of my attachments are in topics that have now been deleted - hence I've deleted them and made space for the gear ratios spreadsheet - sorry; don't know from where it was originally sourced so cannot attribute.

Having done that I can't find out either how to attach a file or how to upload one and link to it - help!

Though I haven't driven an earlier one I don't find the later one a problem in that respect.

Right - I've now gone into the full editor and found the "attach" option - so here we are

EDIT - note it's not as many people think just a simple change of upper ratios - the whole gearbox including differential is almost completely different - though it's only the mph/100rpm figures that need to be considered. Reverse isn't any different! :giggle:
