how small can you go for winter tyres?

checked with my insurance company NFU

they say no problem with moving down size and speed rating as long as they are fit for use ie:- regarding the load capacity

now im looking at tyres lol

what makes you go for that particular size/spec mate?

Because this size is fitted to Superb S.

This is why I paid a fraction more for them rather than My Tyres steels - which may also be fine - and I've had a satisfactory winter out of mine.

How do you know what rims MyTyres supply? Did you ask them or assumed they are not genuine

Good question. I did try and ask them - numerous times! They told me that I needed to buy steel wheel specific bolts to go with the wheels and that they didn't sell bolts.

It may be that they would have been OK - but I got the feeling they were just washing their hands of this matter and didn't want to commit. I'm sure many others have bought these wheels for VAG vehicles, so perhaps someone else can confirm that I was wrong.

But I was just being overly cautious as I was changing wheel size as well so wanted everything to be correct.

that makes a lot of sense as it can't be possible to be "out of spec"?

i can get Michelin Alpin's fitted for £98 a corner from Costco although i have not chosen the tyre make as of yet

I've double checked the brochure - S with 1.8TSI comes with 205/55 R16 94V. I can't see how a few kilograms of extra equipment would change anything. I already think 94 is well overestimated, as bigger rims come with 92.

called the dealer today and they are the right size

I have 17" Pirelli Winter tyres that I'm getting ready to put on my Superb...they were on my Octavia MKII VRS before and they are fantastic. We get metres of snow over here in Slovakia, which can last 3-4 months.

Hi Folks,

You need to inform Mr Insurance Man in you

a: Change Speed rating

b: change wheel size

c: fit "aftermarket" wheels

As these can all be classed as a modification.

Yes, you need XL rated tyres for a superb (to carry full-load)

No, you don't "need" V speed rating

This is why i use 225 40 18 Vredestine WintracXtreme's on Genuine Skoda rims.

No issues with insurance, or speed rating, or load rating, or looks, or traction either. - Yes, a little more expensive to buy, but this will be my third trouble-free winter with them.

Al.

No you dont have to inform your insurance, your only making the car safer to drive, are your the type who calls them if you change brand names on summer tyres, a good tyre fitting company will always try to put the same brand on when you go to change, or recommend a different brand but they wont fit something that will not work, those who say there is nowt in the hand book just open your fuel filler flap and you can find all the wheel and tyre sizes there that you can fit

From http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/safety/winter-tyres-in-the-uk.html and relevant to the UK:

If you fit winter or all-season tyres in place of your standard 'summer' tyres there should be no need to tell your insurer – even though the speed index might be lower.

However further down there is the caveat:

Over the winter of 2010/11 we did hear reports of some insurers increasing premiums or remarkably even refusing cover if winter tyres are fitted. As a result we recommend talking to your insurer if you are considering fitting winter tyres.

I suggest that you take a look at the complete page/section and decide for yourself, but for me it reads that as long as you fit stuff that matches the manufacturers recommendations, then you should have no problem with your insurance company, but tell them anyway.

They haven't updated the list for this winter yet, but last winter the British Assocation of insurers issued an easy to read table of the insurers that identifies if you need to tell you company or not that you have fitted winter tyres.

http://www.abi.org.uk/Information/Consumers/General/Winter_Tyres__The_Motor_Insurance_Committment.aspx

I am waiting for them to issue the 2012-13 list, so if I can check my new insurers policy without having to ring them and the Batsrads wanting to charge me for telling them about the change.

Having just spent the last 2 days trying to find decent winter tyres for the Skud, I have to say that the particular size as fitted to the Elegance estate is a total pain to locate. Doubly difficult as I'm located in Northern Ireland where you get robbed blind on delivery charges, if they even deliver at all, or where local tyre merchants have a very limited selection of stock.

However, I did eventually track down Continental WinterContacts, which I am assured are far, far better than the woeful SportContacts as fitted by the factory. I should have a good chance to try them out, as the weatherman is promising a good blast of Arctic air this weekend and I have the pleasure of escaping back to the mainland with the family, so a 200m+ journey on a variety of roads to check them out.

Skoda Insurance want you to tell them when you change tyres to and from Winters. They are also fussy about the size not being more than 2.5% difference in rolling diameter.
