Cleaning your exhaust

Featured Replies

My car is less than a year old but the exhaust already looks very dirty (and its a petrol!).

Any recommendations for what I should use to clean it?

Autosol or Peek, some fine wire wool and a microfibre cloth :)

Brilliant. Thanks guys.

Yes Autosol , but the tips will need fine wire wool, get from a plumbers merchant ( cheaper ) Silver has diesels so do not get black like the petrols asthe DPF burns the soot before it gets to the exhaust so are always clean

Autosol - or JIF/CIF works well.....

I had to use wet and dry on my stainless steel tips. Dont think the previous owner had ever cleaned them in the 6 years he had it

I used autosol on mine when I first got it. Now I just clean them when I wash the car every week .

Be careful when you do this! The first time I cleaned the exhaust tail pipes on my 08 plate, I cut my finger wide open on the sharp edge of the pipe. I was straight out with the file to make sure this never happened again!

I've don't that too, they're feckin sharp.

+ for autosol but as said it won't touch the ends which are pretty heavy with carbon.

Prefer mine dulled down personally, the less sparkely chrome the better. I would rather they were hidden away like those on the Mk5 Golf.

a deep clean with autosol and some wire wool brings them up nice, then i find a quick squirt with bilberry wheel cleaner and a quick rub over shifts the weekly build up of black!

I find Autosol great, no need for wire wool either, just a cloth and some elbow grease!

Do NOT confuse this with a similar sounding product:

Not sure which 'exhaust' and which product it would be worse to mix up!

Bilberry Wheel Cleaner works a treat.

Never needed to use anything else...........

Ditto. But don't think I don't clean the bodywork around them - I just curse when the sponge catches a bit of pipe bling and undos the layer of stealth film I've been trying to cultivate. It even matches the titanium trim on my wife's car.

Nearly took a can of stove enamel to my pipes (and towbar) on one car where they'd seen fit to use black ends for the petrol, but leave the diesel almost shiny even though it was built fully dechromed.

Always did wonder what Anusol was for, but the father-in-law does like his chrome on his Merc.

I like mine black..
