Tailgaitors, and general bad drivers

Featured Replies

LoL. Yeah when they invent a camera otherwise plod will stick to hiding behind bushes on long straights.

Too true unfortunately. I wouldnt mind getting pulled by cops if i was driving like a ****. Doesnt happen nowadays though, all they care about is speeding which in itself is not dangerous. Its not the police's fault though i think they would rather be out policing the roads but the powers that be think otherwise.

What we need is those cameras that record the last 10 minutes of footage when they are trigered in an accident. I believe they have a button you can press to start the recodring manually also. If they face forwards and backwards you could record the evidence and the numberplate and forward it to the authorities. If the same driver gets picked up several times committing driving offences then he gets proscecuted. Make this compulsory and it will also reduce our insurance premiums, win win.

  • He may be a toss pot but that's no reason for you to increase the chances of an accident. And there is a chance that he had a genuine reason for driving like he did. When my second child was born ev

Personally I just continue to drive exactly at the speed limit, while in the correct lane if overtaking.

They can get close if they want, but if I am in the outsdie lane I'm there for a reason as my lane discipline is usually quite good.

I have front and back drive recorders, three times I've sent the info from my rear one to companies of white vans that were following me driving very poorly.

Whoops!!

Absolute class Graham. :giggle:

I have found that in addition to all the usual suspects; that the (usually youngish blokes on their own) drivers of things like Citroen Picassos and Focus Estates are pretty bad at all of the habits mentioned, it is as if they are saying:

"I might be stuck in this box but really I should be in F 1....!"

Dam my crappy works laptop - i cant see the linked video or whatever it is, just has a wee red cross in the top corner. They must be expecting me to use it for work only or something stupid like that.

I think most tailgating occurs when people in front lane hog. I travel a lot of miles every year and now and again when time is not an issue I like to sit at 56 mph behind a truck and watch! It is a really good thing to do, I have seen people throw things at other cars, I have seen people exchanging gestures with there hands and so on, most of these things are caused by poor driving to start with.

1, The car in front blasts past you at 90 mph, you moved over to allow him/her past when you couldn't see the front bumper, then they slow down to 60 to answer the phone or send a text and have the cheek stay in the outside lane.

2, The car in front got there by diving up the inside on the dual carriageway (bad on the A14 for this) whilst everybody else has to queue patiently to pass whilst the trucks take an age to creep past each other (not there fault). BUT when somebody spots the queue jumper sneaking up the inside they close the gap to the car in front (this usually has a domino effect down the line of cars) queue jumper person gets irrate and hurls abuse or swerves at the cars to his right because he can't get back in the line. Like he is the only one in a hurry.

3, The stubborn monkey like in Grahams video, it is my lane and I can not deviate for any reason until I reach my junction, these people are the ones who get in the outside lane on a dual carriageway six miles before the gap to turn right, just incase they can't get across.

4, The complete fool! This is the guy who can see that a truck is indicating to move out to over take a tractor that he is catching quickly, complete fool hits the accelerator and tries to close the gap preventing the big truck from moving out, complete fool blows a gasket when the truck moves out anyway and he has to jam on the brakes, the truck will win! To add stupidity to this, when the truck passes the tractor and moves back the complete fool moves in front of the truck and either hurls abuse or hits the brakes, like 44 ton will stop.....

Anyway, I think I have made my point, chill out, relax, look a long way ahead and a long way behind with your mirrors and try and thread your car through the traffic with minimal fuss, by keeping smooth you will save fuel and wear and tear.

Happy motoring

I went out with trailer at weekend and was on a duel carrageway and was coming to rounderbout and exit was past 180 degrees on rounderbout even though it was same road i was continuing on. So i moved over to outside lane as i came upto rounderbout, just as i get there a mini comes stonking up behind me and follows me into rounderbout as i pass first exit i start to move over to let sid mini past. What i didnt realise was said mini was coming up inside of me and trailer to undertake.

Fair to say said mini didnt make it and nearly ended impailed on side of trailer that had a ton of pea gravel in at the time so would have made mince meat of of side of mini.

Then mini had cheek to blow horn at me as it then passed me on right side as we went back onto duel carrageway, it wasnt me trying to undertake i was trying to be curteous by moving out of way and letting mini past. Wish trailer would have slammed into side of it might have taught mini driver a lesson

Tailgaters are a menace. Even worse are the middle lane tailgaters on motorways that seem to have a fear of going into the third lane.

They come tearing up behind you when you're overtaking a few lorries and sit on your bumper for no reason, even when the overtaking lane is completely clear!

Does my head in. I drive into Swansea centre most mornings and most of it for me is dual carriageway but limits vary between 30 and 40 and it's a nightmare. You get cut up all the time for people wanting to gain one position and it's the regulars who do it too because they know they can get away with it. Some will even use the bus lane to undertake or overtake and even end up cutting buses up. You can even leave a seconds worth of gap otherwise someone will go for it and you end up going backwards.

Been getting a lot of dawdlers lately who don't pull off from lights quick enough when there's no reason to then I end up getting stuck on red again. As a rare threat I was allowed to take my brother's car out to run errands yesterday. Had to go about 25 miles on normal single lane roads only to get Sunday drivers out in force. 25mph in 30's 40's and 50's.

What do other people class as the car behind being too close? I usally go with if i cant see there reg plate in the rear view mirror

Usually people close behind dont bother me but i had somebody run into trailer last week at a set of lights because they wernt paying attention

Some people end up being so close when stopped in traffic I now stop a little earlier then when the car behind stops, creep forward a little do there's safe gap between 2 cars.

I'm also convinced that certain areas have worse drivers than others. Most Swansea drivers are too aggressive and seemingly not bothered if they end up rubbing bumpers. Most probably aren't insured anyway. People Llanelli side of the bridge tend to drive slower and have bad lane discipline. This is just how I've found it.

It was night time so I couldn't see it, but his headlights were in the bottom corners of my rear window when looking in the mirror, definitely too close for comfort

I hate tailgaters I always do the 2 second rule, they still tailgate in terrible weather and I'm going to use the rear wiper method lol

I just pullover when it's safe to do so nowadays or the same as Llanigraham above, move out of the way and slow down a little. Life's too short.

Yep, move over ASAP. There is, however, a certain type that tailgates *even if* there's an empty lane to overtake in. [shrug]

I usually find a good tap at the brakes gives them brown trousers and makes them back off.

Why does it seen its only ever l "boy racers" or idiots in beemers etc. so long as your keeping a safe distance from car in front it'll just frustrate them more.

To be honest I don't think they are the worst. At least they are 'normally' on the ball. Its the middle aged women that seem to be the worst for me. Even if you did give them a flash of red lights for being too close they wouldn't notice because theyre too busy looking at themselves!

In a 30 zone driving at 30 this group seem to get very angry if you stick to the speed limit. I've had a women in her 60s in a Micra tailgating me an waving her arms about. Must have been late for Zumba!

I've seen this. Infact before we have the South Wales meet I went up the A4069 for a quick run to see how it still was. One the way up cars were pulling in for me. Road testers do use it so I guess locals know better. Never expected it though. Sods law on our run we had a someone holding us up and even going over the white line to prevent the overtake.

With bikes when I see them coming I tap the left indicator and move over. I thought this was quite a good thing to do and ever biker I've let past like this have flashed hazards as a thank you. But I said this on a forum and someone had a go at me saying I could have kicked up stones and hurt the rider. I'm not off-roading when I pull in I'm just moving left a bit more. Letting the biker know I'm there gives him more confidence to pass knowing I won't do anything dull so it's safer.

Some people like to moan.

Clearly they can't comprehend the difference between moving over 20-30cm and staying in your lane (where the lorries N/S wheels would be anyway0 or swerving wildy onto the edge of the road where the debris collects.

Tailgaters hack me off a lot, depends who I'm with / what the conditions are which determine my approach to it. The worst kind is when I get lorries doing it (average 50 zone on M62 springs to mind), one in a single lane part flashed me, dead of the night and I had 50 on the clock on the sat nav, nothing else around so I slowly eased it down to around 25 - 30 when we got to an uphill section, into 4th and booted it. That seemed to give him the message!

Other times, I'll lightly tap the brake pedal if the screen wash treatment doesn't work (most fun with sunroofs / cabriolets :p ) and when I had someone following me to whichever lane I went for to let him pass, eventually I'd had enough and just anchored up. But pretty much as always, I like to let them in front of me as often as I can, as A: it could be an unmarked copper, they don't have to drive with blue lights on, and B: I'd rather have them in front of me where I can see them than behind me or in the side of me!

Brilliant Graham just brilliant! A true 'why is there a copper around when you need one moment'!

I had another such moment a couple of years ago when I was sitting behind a panel van & being tailgated by a guy in a black Audi. We al took the first exit at a roundabout, there was a police Octy on the roundabout taking the same exit. It would've ended up a car behind the Audi if it were not for the fact that the Audi driver decieded that he was going to undertake myself & the van by using the cycle lane & the hashed off area. He chucked up a lot of dust, then proceeded up the left filter lane, cut across & went straight over the next roundabout!

I thought 'great! The coppers can throw the book at him!' Err nope! They ignored him & went into Sainsburys to get their lunch! I followed them & ask if they were going to do anything about the incident. To which one replied 'we didn't see anything' and the other said, yes I did see it, do you know that what he went?' :wall:

I usually find a good tap at the brakes gives them brown trousers and makes them back off.

How stupid!!

And what happens if the person behind isn't that aware?
