Tyres & Winter

Featured Replies

Hi harry vederci

I too have a 1 year old Greenline II ( estate ) & I bought a second set of new Skoda alloys (£180) on which I mounted Dunlop Winter Response 185/60/15 last year

so I had last winter using them & just put them back on last weekend

nothing to report apart from hand book says increase pressure by 0.2 bar if using winter tyres so currently running st 2.8 bar

I too have Autosocks which I have found to be fantastic in FRESH snow but cannot be used once the slush freezes as it cuts the fibres of the socks to ribbons

as a precaution I bought a set of Thule CK-7 snow chains which are only 7mm thick which seem to clear all the suspension etc

The thinnest snow chain in the world

Features

  • 7 mm inside and on-the-tread clearance.
  • Special twisted links, reduced chain thickness to 7 mm.
  • Micro-regulation system for perfect tensioning of the chain.
  • Closed shortening hooks avoid coils on the chain.
  • Anti-scratch nylon bumpers protecting alloy wheels (optional application).
  • Innovative design and unique color-coded assembling points.
  • Homologations/certifications/conformity: Ö-Norm 5117, CUNA, UNI 11313, TÜV.
  • Thule CK-7 is often suggested by car manufacturers as a solution for vehicles with problems in snow chain fitting, like Citroën C4 Picasso, C3 Picasso, Fiat Bravo, Lancia Delta, Peugeot 1007, Peugeot 207, Renault Laguna II, Renault Laguna III, Seat Exeo.

Hi,

that's reassuring to hear. I'm just about to pace my order for the Winter Response tyres now. Out of interest, how much were yours last year? I'm paying £274.50 fully fitted.

I bought my Dunlop Winter Response 185/60/15 last November from Mytyres.co.uk - shipped over from Germany in about 3 days - factory fresh tyres only about 2 weeks old for about £280 ish then I had to pay £20 to get them fitted & balanced ( £20 for all 4)

I had to wait until I got the car in November before getting the winter tyres to make sure the sizes were correct etc what I noticed with Mytyres was the price of winters got dearer as winter approached ( supply & demand) and were at the most expensive at the time I bought them (when I needed them) then the price dropped after Xmas ( still winter ) even cheaper buying them in the summer

so your getting a good deal - though I would ensure they are this seasons tyres - and not old stock thats been lying around since last winter check the dates on the side walls ( I wanted as new a tyre as possible for my winters so that they last a few years - they will probably get thrown away from old age rather then thread wearing out)

Mine are being supplied by blackcircles.com and have already gone up in price since I placed my order. I've emailed them regarding the age of the stock they're using, thanks for pointing that out.

regards,

Is it possible to get VRS friendly steel wheels that 205/45/16 tyres will fit onto?

  • 3 months later...

I've just fitted winter tyres (Dunlop SP Sport 01 A/S) size 185/60 R15 M&S. I mounted them to a set of old rims from fleabay, 6J x 100/5 ET 43, identical to the rim on the spare wheel in the boot. I chose these tyres because the spec said 67 dB - much quieter that the usual 72 or 73dB quoted for other winter tyres. I was also happy to take off the shiney new alloys and clean them uup. These have seen nothing but salt in their 725 miles since I got the car in late Jan.

First impressions over a 6 mile run- there is a low pitched rumnble from the new tyres that is not noticably quieter than the original 205/45 R16 tyres that came with the car.

I did an experiment with Tom-Tom nav which I kept at 100kph with cruise control. At this stable speed the origial tyres returned a MFD reading of 106 kph and the new read 104kph at the same speed. So my original tyres caused an over reading of 6% on the speedo and the new tyres 4%. I'm quite happy with that.

Guess the new tyres have got more tread - therefore a large outer diameter.

But I often notice the same when I switch from summer to winter even with the same size.
