Which engine, equipment level etc should I get?

Featured Replies

Which factory-installed equipment should I get, with regards to things that are worth paying a bit extra for, or that gives the car higher value later?

I have ordered a pre-configured car:

  • 60 PS GreenTec manual
  • Red colour, Titan interior
  • "Ambition" model - quite similar to SE model, without AC, with City Safe
  • "City" upgrade - rear parking sensors, cruise control, "driving computer" (probably the same as Instrument HIGH), 4 extra speakers and prepared for Move&Fun

Unfortunately, it will be delayed, but this gives me the opportunity of customizing the engine, color, equipment and so on.

I am considering:

  • 75 PS (would force me to upgrade to Elegance, so it will be quite expensive - worth it??)
  • Black or other colour
  • AC - not really sure if it's needed here in cold Norway...
  • Different interior?

I would really appreciate any advice on these, and also other equipment that I might have forgotten that is advantageous to get installed in factory.

I wouldn't worry about the AC in your country.

Specs differ from country to country so its hard to tell what yours is.

Have you got electric windows and central locking ? Thats an essential option for me.

The S in the UK doesn't have electric windows or remote central locking but its an option.

Not sure what the variation in cost in Norway will be between elegance and the ambition model is

But here in the UK you get a lot more kit for not much more money on the elegance over the lower models

I opted for the elegance purely on std items on the elegance air con (remember its not just helpful in hot weather also demists and dries the air in cold weather too although most air con does not work below certain temperatures )

Only thing is spare wheel might be worth it if its not std fit

Thanks, this is really helpful as I just got to know about the possibility to do upgrades, and I have to decide soon!

The original model has electric windows and remote locking, and I agree that they are essential!

The difference between Ambition 60 (middle model) and Elegance 60 is £1 220, and to Elegance 75 it's £1 688. I am actually not sure if these are the prices I would have to pay, as the original model has some extras in addition to the Ambition "package".

Spare wheel is not standard, I considered it as not very important, but you might have a point! Maybe I should opt for it, it's one of the cheaper add-ons.

I've got an ex demo. I'm not sure if i've got a spare wheel or not i need to check when I pick the car up on Saturday. I think a spare wheel is a good option to go for as someone said the tyre repair kit won't fix a tyre thats been cut/ripped.

I want to be able to put on the space saver spare and off I go !

I think the biggest question is: is it worth the extra money to get 75 HP instead of 60? I do fine with my 64 HP Fabia Stw today, so I probably don't need the extra power... but...

BTW, I tried to compare, and you don't get very much cheaper upgrades or extra equipment if you buy the Elegance instead of purchasing the missing equipments individually. But, I suppose the interior is better-looking, and Elegance gives the option of having the biggest engine...

I found the 60ps engine pretty good on my test drive and had I not bought an ex demo ( elegance 75ps ) I would have gone for the 60ps. It depends what you can afford really. The 75ps has got a bit more poke to it :)

Hi,

although we live in Norway, I find aircondition an essential option. Summer days can get hot and aircon provides more comfortable cooling than open windows. I've also used it many times for demisting the windscreen. In addition, I would be a little worried that a car without A/C will be harder to sell in a few years - not many cars are sold without it. A dealer told me (possibly a salesman trick) that the cars he had sold so far had been top specced...

Regarding 60 hp vs 75 hp: The official figures from Skoda and most reports suggest that the difference is not very noticeable unless the engine runs above about 4300 rpm. After that, the 75 hp engine will be more powerful. A guy in some german forum has reconstructed (it's only an estimate) the power and torque curves for the up!, which confirms this: http://www.motor-talk.de/blogs/all-about/vw-up-44-vs-55-kw-radzugkraftvergleich-drehzahl-bei-t3769837.html It is also said here that the 75 hp version (for the up! anyway) has a different final drive, so that for any given speed and in the same gear, the 60 hp version will run at lower rpms. Put another way; even if the engines themselves produce the same power and torque below 4300 rpm, at any given engine speed (rpm), the 75 hp car will deliver a slightly higher torque at the wheels (but at somewhat lower speed). As I don't like to work engines so hard, I chose the 60 hp.

I find the seat fabric of the Elegance looks to be of better quality than the Ambition.

Regards the 60ps or 75ps, I'd say unless you are going to rev it to the redline and generally give it a very good workout the 75ps engine is not worth the additional cost that you have said.

I have driven 200 miles in a 3 door 60ps SE and 1500 miles in a 5 door 75ps Elegance. Both of them were mine.

There is no difference at all until you start to stretch the engine at around 5000rpm in my opinion, which is backed up by the offical Skoda figures.

The 60 and 75 have the same peak torque at the same spread of rpm. The peak 60ps of power is in the usuable rev range, but the 75ps peak power is at a little over 6k rpm... when the redline on the rev counter is at 6k !!! So you have to rev it into the red area to get maximum power.

If yu want to race about though, then the 75ps is for you as it does like a good thrashing. :D

And I would get aircon.

It's worth it for better quality ventilation over opening a window near a smelly lorry and the demisting effect.

Hmm. At first, I thought that maybe upgrading the engine was the most important part for later sale value and to make the care more versatile, and if I did that, I would get a lot of the extra equipment anyways. I don't like to rev the engine very much (thus, the Citigo felt really weak when I started test driving it), so maybe it's not worth the additional cost.

On the other hand, if I am going to get a lot of the extras anyway, it won't be much more expensive to upgrade the engine...

I am also struggling with color. I consider black + black alloys + ivory interior + sun set, but I'm having a hard time imagining how it will look in real life. Maybe it will be a too boy-ish look to make it easy to sell to the target group (grandmas :giggle: ) later?

It's hard to predict what will influence resale value the most. My personal guess is that in this end of the market, most people are not too concerned about engine power, and I don't think you would get the extra money back. So knowing that there is little to separate them in practice, I chose the 60hp.

You get the same equipment with a 60hp Elegance as with the 75hp Elegance?

Maybe it will be a too boy-ish look to make it easy to sell to the target group (grandmas :giggle: ) later?

The target group for small cars is broadening...although Norway may be lagging a bit behind the rest of Europe :)

Lol I don't think Skodas's target aim is grandmas going by the brochure pictures showing people in their twentys.

I don't know what a Granny would make of a PID !

Grannys and Grandpas in Guernsey tend to drive Perodua Kenaris ( Ultimate granny mobile pictured below lol ), Perodua Kelisa, Perodua Myvi, Basic Fiat Panda and Hyundai i10s ( Great car though, my wife has one and shes not Granny lol ).

Hehe :) Maybe it's just my impression because all my grandparents drove Yaris, which also is a tall, small and neat car :)

After reading your inputs on engine, I think 60 Hp should be enough. The reasoning behind getting the 75 Hp was that it was not that much more expensive, and the difference seems relatively big (25%). But, as it sounds like you don't get the same increase when you drive, and I'm quite happy with my 64 Hp Fabia, I think 60 Hp on this one should be adequate!

The brochure in the UK seems to aim the Citigo at the younger market more.

Which makes a lot of sense. They grow up, have kids/move out of town and need a bigger car.

Kind of like what BMW do with the 1 series/Bini. Get them used to the brand.

Personally I think City cars have a wide appeal these days.

We are in our (late) 50's and grandparents, but the reason we have bought a citigo is to replace the i10 (just because the Citigo is a much better car).

We decided a while ago that we did not need 2 big cars - so the Octy estate went in favour of the small economical and cheap to run pixie car.

Next we decided to change the missus' 320D for the Yeti.

Seems to me that there are quite a few people on here with the Citigo / Yeti combination.

I think the citigo / up / mii would be a superb vehicle for a newly qualified driver, low insurance, low running costs but with enough pzazz to make them desirable.

In truth a car for all seasons!

Yep we are Yetigo people in our 50's.

Good advice when you buy a new car. Buy the highest spec you can afford, with the most economical engine with reasonable performance in a colour that you like and will also sell well when you come to part with it. Always go for a higher spec rather than a lower spec with lots of extras. Remember when you come to part ex the car in 2 or 3 years time the extras that you paid extra for will make next to no difference to your trade in value. Been there and got the T shirt so many times. Your hard earned carefully looked after pride and joy nearly always becomes someone else's bargain.

I have been convinced that the 60 Hp engine is adequate, so this is my (current) list:

  • Elegance 60
  • Black metallic, Titan interior (I guess the Ivory one would look dirty quite soon, although I liked it best :()
  • Sun-Set
  • "City" upgrade (parking sensors, cruise control, 4 extra speakers and preparation for Move&Fun)
  • Spare wheel
  • Move&Fun

Have I forgotten anything? :)

Lots of car cleaning equipment? :)

Is aircon standard on your Elegance models?

If so I think that sounds like a nice car.

'Double boot floor' from the UP!

Winter tyres

Webasto parking heater maybe :)

There's not that much more you can add :) Do you need a height-adjustable passenger seat...?

Haha :) I am a bit worried about that part, but do you think the red one will hide the dirt better? Or would I have to go for the grey one? I have also started considering dark interior.

Yeah, I really liked the thought of having a double floor, so I asked my dealer yesterday if he could order the parts if I gave him the part numbers.

Winter tyres are included! Not sure if they come with alloys, though...

I am not sure about a heater. I don't have a regular parking spot with electrical access, is it possible to run a webasto on benzine? Also, as I don't use the car to work (I can walk 5 minutes to the office :) ), I'm not really sure if it's worth the money. But, in the really cold winters (-20 degrees), I have often missed a heater...

That's true :D I don't suppose so. As I'm quite taller than my girlfriend, it's nice to have in the driver's seat, but I don't think it's that important on the passenger seat.

To be honest any colour hides the dirt better than black.

I won't say red is the best, but it's OK. Personally I don't like grey.

Only had one grey car, on a grey road with grey skies it's not exactly visable. A lorry didn't see it and we had an accident.

That's a valid point for choosing other than black as well. I really like the Fabia green color, but I guess the Citigo is lighter and maybe more yellow-ish from what I've seen on the pictures. It's a bit scary to choose a color without seeing it in real life first :)
