Which? tests battery life for smartphone browsing

Featured Replies

Which? magazine have done some tests of some popular smart phones and how long their batteries last under intensive web browsing here

Maybe Crapple should start selling their phones with a free "Caddy" battery pack to hook on your belt.

Hmm, well my S3 still uses the battery quicker than my old SE W950, but I guess it is doing more.

Just about getting used to the limited battery life on Smartphones now, have a car charger, always on the the charger every night at home and have one of those battery recharge packs in my laptop bag.

That's wierd, my iPhone 5 is much better than the 4s was :S

Very difficult to come out with consistent, reliable results for this sort of thing though. As I'd expect from Which, they've had a decent go at it and done what they can to keep the test consistent between phones.

But it of course depends how you use the device. Biggest issue I find is if you're in a low-signal area and the handset's having to search for signal, and switch between data modes.

ROMs and firmware can also have a huge difference, especially with Android devices. Stock Samsung software on an S2 versus a custom ROM for example, often means the custom device can be far more efficient with battery power compared with the stock device.

I've started turning off my data unless actively using and the difference is amazing.

Instead of coming home to 20% I'm coming home to 60% with the same data usage, just its not on when in my pocket.

Which as not as unbiased as you may believe, they along with a number of review sites have been known in the past to favour those who pay them the most to review their products.

I had an HTC Desire (the original model) and swapping the ROM over to Cyanogenmod improved it immensely in terms of battery life and performance. I replaced it with a Samsung Galaxy SIII which I got when they first came out -the battery life is fantastic for an Android phone -most of the time I only charge it every other day and I do use it for browsing etc.

Just moved to a galaxy s3 from an s2, had extra capacity batteries for the s2 and was swapping them daily, with the s3 the battery is lasting all day

The tide is turning, even my sons dumb girlfriend, who has been using iPhones for years, has just got herself a shiny new SIII, and been gleefully showing him how much better it is than his 4s

I'd take any review done this way with a pinch of salt. Real world usage is what its all about, you cannot compare the battery life the way these tests were setup. I mean, setting screen brightness to maximum for example, why would they do this. One phones maximum brightness maybe brighter than another and use more power as a result. Even in bright sunlight you don't need to use maximum brightness on some handsets, whereas you may on another because the screen is dimmer even on maximum. The phones should have been set to auto brightness like nearly all handsets are, or been set to the same level using a light meter.

Did they take into account the amount of time you have to power cycle the S3 due to it locking up?

LMAO.

Looks like she's got more brains than you thought lol

....obviously one of the great brainwashed!

Lmao ( Love My Apple Obliviously ?)

Nice one phanboy, somehow in any discussion about any phone non apple, one always has to throw criticism in to the fray, in an 'if its not apple it's no good......android locking up goes back to the good old days of running the android o.s on a windows phone......if you pull your head out of the sand you'll find the s3 is actually better than the iPhone 5!

Can't say I've ever seen my phone lock up either. Maybe some weird app installed?

That's what Samsung are saying, they say its the apps that are causing it. I don't understand that though, surely they are tested before released into the App Store?

Not at, I do have an iPhone but I'm looking at perhaps getting a HTC in jan, I did order a iPhone5 but had to cancel it due to a bathroom disaster and now I'm looking at others before plunging for a iPhone again. I don't mind android devices however the trouble that my wife and a mate has had with their galaxy S's I would never have one.

I've had dodgy apps crash but I've never had an Android device lock up on me.

Tested against every phone and every possible combination of apps installed? Unlikely. Very very unlikely

No apps are properly tested its up to the designer to do

Well call me a apple fanboy if you like but my apple phone has never locked up with apps, neither has my mates HTC.

My wife doesn't have anything unusual installed, just angry birds, right move IMDB, infact IMDB made it crash last night, the screen turns white and you can do nothing with the phone and you have to remove the battery to turn it off. It has been back for repairs 5 times now each time they just reinstall the software and say there's nothing wrong with the phone.

As this thread seems to have turned into another phone brand bashing thread rather than its original subject, its obviously run its course so thread locked.
