Monte Carlo tdi 105 MPG

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been done previously.

Just wondering when I can expect to get anywhere near the claimed MPG on the 105 tdi Monte Carlo? We have a 12 reg Monte and has just crossed 9k miles. I was expecting to get more than 400 miles from a tank of diesel.

In comparison, my other car (56 Seat Ibiza FR PD130) easily achieves 60mpg on a run home from work (20 miles mainly dual carriageway) but the Monte when I have it is struggling to get to 50-52mpg.

I wasn't expecting to get 67mpg as claimed by Skoda as I know this will have been achieved in perfect conditions. I was hoping to easily achieve 55-60mpg though.

I welcome your thoughts and advice

I sold my monte on 10000 miles and never once even in a long run better 60mpg.about town 40mpg.....Am quite sure Skoda made the official figures up. :)

Just typed a reply and the computer ate it!

I am at 6200 miles, getting around 50-55mpg. It is increasing steadily with each fill up now, so I'm reckoning it has loosened up.

My "commute" is a 20 mile round trip of rural roads, twice a day. One short bit of 60mph+, the rest limited to 50mph or down single track roads that do not suit the Monte's suspension or power band...

I reckon if I drive it sensibly, I see 60mpg on the average mpg screen, but the second I need to accelerat in 5th, change down, or generally get any flexibility, it drops back to mid/low 50s.

A long run, or a similar distance on "proper" roads would see 60mpg, but I doubt I'd get 67 or whatever it's supposed to be. That'll be the fallacy of rolling road test conditions...

I have a Fabia 1.6cr 105bhp elegance which I'm pretty sure is the same car apart from trim

Ours has done 24,000 and maxi dot gives an average of 56mpg and that's a good mix

We recently drove from essex to Cornwall and had a reading in the 60s

My Monte Carlo has done just under 4000 miles and I regularly see 60-65 MPG, on a recent trip to Retford I got this;

One thing I have noticed is if your journey time is less than 20 mins economy never goes above 60. My work journey is around 15-20 mins and I usually achieve 55-60 if I drive sensibly, 50 with a little play here and there.

I returned to Nottingham from Stockport yesterday and managed 65, even through the hilly peaks (A6).

Usual rules also apply with MPG, check your tyre pressures, make sure brakes aren't binding, use quality fuel, etc.

hmmm, I will persevere and see what happens in the next month or two. Thanks for the advice guys.

One thing I would say is the Monte Carlos accelerator pedal is hyper sensitive when compared against my old Astra.

I have noticed when watching the instant consumption that what feels like a millimeter on the pedal can make 20-30 miles per gallon difference with no extra speed gained, it sounds daft but try driving without shoes a couple of times and watch the instant consumption.

A regular filter/fluids service will also help with the MPG - also check tyre pressures etc.

The mother in laws 105 CRDi elegance was averaging 55mpg (560 miles per tank) at 10k miles, once the oil/fuel and air filters were changed it's now averaging 63mpg (640 miles per tank) on same roads / conditions etc.

I had my 1.6 TDI 105 Monte new last November and just passed the 21k mark, it has got better and better with the more miles I've put on, but it does still from time to time have a funny five and will average 48mpg then the next day it will be 63mpg!?

Most the time I'm getting no less than 55mpg anywhere, I think the most I've had from a tank so far is about 510 miles! Normally it's around the 450 mark.

I have my car going in for it's first service on Monday so hopefully it will improve after that. But it's extremely frustrating when they say a combined 67mpg as their official figure but I seriously struggle to get much over 50mpg driving 20/25 miles each way to work and back! I know it's unlikely that you can average 67mpg out of a tank, but I'd expect to see a lot more than 50mpg. It's costing me a fortune at the minute.

Have you changed your driving style at all?

I found when I drove it like old cars (the last few have had Skoda/VAG PD diesel engines, or petrol), I wasn't getting good economy.

I tweaked my driving style (perhaps to suit the CR's style) and it improved.

Now I find on the days I ignore it completely and bimble along (without trying to cane it or hyper-mile) it will be much better when I do checke the economy.

Maybe the display has performance anxiety!

I see your point PDIBK. I have tried different ways of driving it, like this morning for example, I brought the Ibiza to work. 64.4 mpg sittting at 65mph most of the way apart from sitting in traffic for the last mile or so of traffic. If I was to do the same in the Ibiza, it would struggle to be in the fifties. I have read that the CR engines need a bit more revving than the PD engines, but I don't want to have to be revving the t*ts off my car just to get half decent economy. I just want to drive my Fabia normally and get within 10/15% of the claimed mpg :-(. Like I have said previously, it was the economy that I went for but it it costing me a fortune in fuel.

The tank is 10 gallons, so your car is lying to you, as 450 from a tank is 45mpg. 510 miles is 51mpg.

I suspect he means when the fuel light comes on. In my experience it comes on when there's over a gallon still in the tank.

My Monte TDi 105 has just passed 10,000 miles. Fill-to-fill I always get 55-57 mpg. That's a mixture of all road types (mainly A and B roads though) and i do over 100miles a day Monday to Friday.

I have a September 2011 105 TDi monte. Currently averaging around 68mpg, with my best run at 81.1mpg. Best tank average so far has been 74.7mpg.

Best mileage on a tank before refilling was 727, and I rckon on getting 600+ on every tank.

I should point out that the figures I quoted I worked out from fuel receipts not what the trip tells me. I find this can vary alot with the trip dsiplay showing anything between 54 and 67.5mpg average after each commute.

I should also point out that I don't try and hypermile it. I drive at the prevailing limit not 5-10mph below it and overtake where needed etc etc.

What mileage is on your Monte?

This engine takes alot of running in unfortunately and I can get 60+ mpg on a long run, however just normal day to day driving I get around 56+ mpg. As others have said, if I just drive normally and don`t concentrate on the comsumption I seem to get better results!

Chris980 be patient with your car, its a great beautifully refined engine, and I was disappointed at first! Just takes about 15000 miles to run in!

I get 480 miles on a tank on day to day running. Not bad for a 40 litre tank

Just passed 36,000 miles

FairPlay that is immense!! That's figures I could only dream of! How the heck do you achieve this???

done 1000miles now in my 2 week old 105 Tdi Monte and can achieve 55-62mpg without really trying!

Ive got my TSI to 54 mpg

The tank is 10 gallons, so your car is lying to you, as 450 from a tank is 45mpg. 510 miles is 51mpg.

I thought the tanks were 42 litres not 45?

Driven this week from south east Kent to Buxton in Derbyshire and achieved average 63.5 mpg with my Fabia tdi 105 driving at speed limits (and slightly over on motorway!)

Defo a 45 litre tank - 9.9 gallons. I ran mine on the empty light for 20+ miles once and got 44 litres in it.

Scary.

I think the gearing is weird - in my wife's golf Bluemotion Tech thingy (same engine, 5 spd 'box, don't know if it's the same 'box though), the driving style is more relaxed. It seems more effortless and while slower at low revs/speeds, seems a bit stronger on the motorway.

Now, obviously it's a different car, different weight/noise damping, supsension (Monte's suspension/wheel combo is awful) etc, but it easily achieves 60mpg, on the motorway and has fewer miles.

Yes, I've driven my wife's car on longer journeys and would need to drive the Monte on the same run to compare, butI think the gearing in the Monte is very tall, which makes it hard to sit at a comfortable speed AND achieve good economy.
