Home/Car CCTV

Featured Replies

Does anybody have CCTV in their home looking directly over their car, or camera's within their car? Typically, the day I'm going to pick up the new car mine, my partner's and next door's Fabia have all been keyed overnight at some point and I'll be fuming if the new car suffers the same fate.

I am loathed to leave it out on the street but we don't have a driveway or garage. I'm going to ask my next door neighbour on the other side, whether I could use his driveway/piece of random land but it isn't paticularly well lit and I'm wondering whether I'm asking for more trouble parking it out of the way in the pitch black as opposed to the street.

So I'm looking for something really to hook up either inside the car or overlooking it, does anybody run anything similar?

You've got to be careful as what you are proposing may well be illegal as you will be recording a public area with out consent of those that you are recording.

A proximity alarm may be a better idea to keep the buggers away from it.

Feel your worry though.

Fixed that for you....

Since when filming in public places was illegal in UK?

I'd be interested in this as even in my usually very peacful cul de sac some vandalism happened recently. On the other hand clearing the garage would be a good idea as well lol.

Nope but I wish I had - some scrotes tried to get into my garage last week by ripping the door lock out with a sliding hammer. When they failed tey moved on to houses further down the road. One of the locals saw them before they legged it but with no CCTV and only descriptions to go on there is no chance of catching them!

We have an eyspye247 IP security camera, you set it up and then view it over wireless, either at home with the computer that will also record on a motion sensor or when you are away from home you can log in off your mobile device or laptop or internet cafe.... You get the picture.

BUT we don't use ours for security, we use it to look at the bird feeders in the back garden, when the squirrel appears to steel our bird food we shoot him with an air rifle, and we pick the rats off with it too as they eat the bird food. Maybe not to everyones liking but it takes allsorts..

I have a securix 4 channel CCTV camera installed at my house. It's wired though and took some time to lay the cabling and setup in the house. Sends iPhone alerts when motion is detected and records 24 hours a day.

He he - I have cameras for the birds as well but in birdboxes - wish I'd used on for the garage now!

If your CCTV does record something and you call Mr Plod, just make sure you have a warning sign up when they call round. Plenty on the net, just print and laminate.

Next door had their defender knicked last year. Mr Plod did a door to door asking if anyone had seen/heard anything and did me or anyone else have home CCTV. I expect that Mr Plod did look to see if any houses had cameras.

Been thinking about getting CCTV here too.

Since when filming in public places was illegal in UK?

There's no statute that has made filming in public places illegal. It would be a very very touchy area for the law to deal with. For example: after the 7/7 attacks, there was a police appeal for any footage that may be relevant. If it was illegal, they'd get no-one coming forward, even if there was relevant footage.

If you search through youtube you'll find quite a few instances where the police (and in a few places security guards) tell members of the public that it's illegal to film in public. The first video shows a rather epic fail on behalf of the police, when the officer involved, having found that he's wrong, just walks off........

If you couldn't film in public, there goes a lot of family videos taken on beaches, in parks etc. It would be illegal for tourists to take videos of the places they're visiting.

My understanding is that you can record in public, and having your car as the focal point wont cause any issues. I believe it becomes an issue if you're focussing the camera on a neighbours property to keep an eye on them, as part of a neighbour dispute or something similar. I also think that whatever you do, you must now display a sign that says there is CCTV in use.

If someone could clarify my thoughts, that would be great as im considering doing similar.

I stand corrected.

OK so it isn't clear for personal property protection, the ICO FAQ states :-

Q: My neighbour has installed a CCTV camera and it is pointing towards my house/garden. Is this a breach of the Data Protection Act?

If your neighbour’s camera is installed on their residential property and being used for their own personal domestic use, they are unlikely to be breaching the Data Protection Act. This is because the use of CCTV cameras for domestic security purposes is exempt from the data protection principles. This applies when a person uses CCTV to protect their home from burglary, even if the camera overlooks the street or other areas near their home. If your neighbour is using CCTV for business purposes they will need to comply with the Act. If you are concerned about the use of domestic CCTV it may be worth contacting your local police. For more information, contact our helpline or read our topic guide about CCTV.

However that is stating residential property, so would suggest that it would be OK to point it towards the street from your house, I suspect though that you would need to have it cover you front garden and the street to ensure that there isn't any issue. The key word is overlooking.
