Anyone got a 2.5 TDI Elegance 160? Is 35mpg right?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just in the processes of returning the Superb I bought on Tuesday as it's a heap, looking at a 2005 2.5 TDI Elegance 160 Auto (TIP) instead and just wondered whether the 35mpg listed on Parkers is right?

It sounds a little low for a diesel, even if it is 160bhp and enormous lol

Thanks,

I would say it is closer to 40 on a combined cycle.

I know someone who had an automatic A4 with this engine. 40 average and 45 max he was reporting.

If you want economy get a PD130, I'm getting average of 50 and I drive around london alot.

You can get economy from 2.5TDI, but not from the tiptronic. But there are very few manual 2.5TDIs around.

I have the Tiptronic 2.5 and it is absolutely GREAT. Best car I have ever had. Economy is good at around 40mpg average and up to 50+ on a Motorway with criuse control set at 55ish.

Done 60,000 in my 2.5 TIP and 35mpg about right for day to day driving but I don't tend to hang around. Motorway is around 40-45. Acceleration so nice and creamy hard not to have fun.

Averaging 40mpg. As others say, better on motorway but less on town driving.

Great car though.

Mine's on me Fuelly bit below. Most of this is stop-start home to work over four miles though. It's quite easy to get it up on the 40's, but I find every time I do, I just then hit a traffic jam and just watch it tick back down, so I've given up and just enjoy the grunt B)

If it's economy you're after there's better choices than the V6.

My average over the last 3.5 years and 32k miles is 38.6mpg. You can get up to 50mpg on the motorway. The thing about the 2.5 is that it does not use that much more fuel when you push it hard. Where it's a killer is (1) cold starts as the tranny and big block take ages to warm up and (2) town driving. Those 4 cams and two extra cylinders do sap fuel. At idle the 2.5 uses twice as much fuel as the 1.9 (0.8kg/hr vs 0.35-0.40 kg/hr).

But the 2.5 is just soooo smooth and lovely to drive.

I think my 1.9 is lovely to drive also...

Get a 1.9 it's a great engine!

You have to clean your intake from all the gunk and

Run big bottle of redex on 1 full tank to clean the system

...

When I bought my one (same as yours) I had 24mpg around town

And 35mpg on motorway

Then cleaned intake pipes ( 2 iron cast that sits on each had and iron cast that goes acros )

and got 26mpg in town and 45mpg on the run

The thing is people compare the 4 vs 6 cylinder diesel Superbs and both have pros and cons but ultimately it's a bit like comparing apples and pears - they are completely different and depends what you really fancy. A 2.5 tdi auto will feel sluggish and smooth. If you boot it it will, however, pull like a train. A manual 2.5 will provide superior economy and make use of the fact you can stroll around town at 1200-1300 rpm smoothly with no rattles, and it will actually pull quite well from those low revs too, especially the later 160PS engine that has peak torque down there - this is just not an option with a 1.9 - I have driven many of them and they are not happy below around 1700-1800 rpm - the 130PS version also has dual mass flywheels that don't tend to last if driven at low revs. Apart from that the 1.9 is a very durable engine, and economical too. My 2.5 auto is a bit thirsty by comparison but most of my mileage is on EU motorways where the big engine uses insignificantly more fuel than the smaller engine but has a much more potent disposition hence it eats up miles more easily, and I regularly cover over 1000 miles in a day. Lifetime average 38.6 mpg or 7.3 l/100km, as recorded on www.spritmonitor.de, and a lot of that was pushing it.

I've just done a 200 mile round trip and my average mpg (well at least that shown by the car) was 44.3mpg. Mostly 50-60mph A roads, the somewhat obligatory 35mph for too many miles on the M25 and I managed to time the 5pm A21 snarl-up at Sevenoaks to a tee :wall:

So mine's mid-forties if I can just keep it moving reasonably, which I'm quite happy about :sun:

I obviously just need to cycle to work more!
