Pirelli P Zero Rosso on Yeti

Featured Replies

Just taken delivery of my new 170 Elegance, scads of toys to play with. Checked the big black rubber bits, found Pirelli P Zero Rosso fitted. Previous Yeti had Dunlop SP Sports, no problems with them, but down to 2.5mm all round after 24k miles not exactly a high mileage, but that's someone else's problem now, sold it quickly. Been a long time since I had any experience of Pirellis, anyone any comments likes/dislikes of these tyres please? Any feedback appreciated.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the input, but opinion seems divided. Guess I'll have to wait until they need to be replaced before deciding what to use next. Keep you posted how they perform.

Cheers.

My 170 has them and they grip very well.

I've even done a few track events on them and they have stood up well to abuse too.

Now at around 12k miles they are about half worn, but they have not had an easy life.

A lot of people seem not to like Pirellis but I use P6000 Js on my Jaguar and they are excellent - get 25,000 fast miles out of them.

I had them on my Senator as well but were replaced by Dunlop Sports which were dreadfull - squealing at the slightest hint of speed on a bend and no grip on snow at all.

Have them on my Yeti unfortunatly as I'm not a big fan of Pirelli tyres all the way back to P6 &7s, I much prefer Bridgeston, Continental or Dunlop even Yokohama. I have found Pirelli to be noisy and poor in the wet which in the UK is the majority. My opinion is based on cars from 170 to 410 hp everyday use and track days. I just feel that I would not part with my cash for them as replacement tyres.

Got them on my recently (7th September) delivered 170 Elegance also. They seem pretty ok so far - although I've not really put them through their paces yet. Still trying to keep the revs down.....

I have them. Have given 'em some welly. Good tyres; especially in the wet.

Hardly a comparison with your tyres, but I have nothing against the make. I ran Pirelli Scorpions on my Terrano and latterly on the X-Trail without problem.

Ive always thought Michelin out do the equivalent Pirelli at every turn and some of the worst tyres ive driven on over the years have been pirellis - p700z's, p6000's and more recently the Rosso's but I know there are a few versions of it available. The main dislike them all was the damp/wet weather performance but i also know tyres are a massively subjective topic!

Edit, to add - that i had Dunlop Sport 01's factory fitted from the factory and these seem to be universally disliked... I, however think they are a long lasting, good all round tyre. :-)

It's really is very odd how opinions of tyres differ - I have loved Pirellis ever since I fitted Cinturatos on our Anglias in the mid 1960s and they were truly fantastic compared to other stuff available then.

Equally I have never liked Dunlops.

I don't like Conti's but every new car I get seems to have them including the Yeti :S

Actually prefer good old British Avon's but there not always produced in suitable sizes/speed rating.

When the Pirelli P600 was produced it was also much better than other, then Yokohama's A008 came along mid 80's and was streets ahead other for years. Dunlop have improved the most over recent years. .

Dunlops on mine, down to about 3mm and covered 25k did change 'em round March time.

I'm pleased with their all round performance - however, don't know about snow as last winter it missed the west coastal strip, maybe a light dusting, so as above no real idea of snow/frost/ice etc

Mine too has Pirellis. A make of tyre I have never had before on any new or used car....and the Yeti is my 26th car.

Only done 450 miles and they grip well and the car handles like a dream. There is a fair bit of tyre noise and by choice I prefer Contis,

Got them on my 140 DSG. Only done 3000 miles so hard to comment but no issues apparent. I have driven in some very wet conditions and they have been fine. My only regret is that Skoda don't fit the Dunlop Grand Treks I had on my X Trail.

I couldn't wait to get rid of the P Zero Neros on my last X-Type or the P Zeros on my XF. Both suffered from tramlining and poor performance in standing water - the SP Sport 01s which I fitted to the XF were a great improvement, and the Nokian Z G2s I currently have fitted are better still.

Having said that, our new Yeti's P Zero Rossos don't seem too bad - no experience yet in winter conditions, but none of the problems which I experienced with Pirelli-shod Jaguars. Still likely to go for Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons when they wear out, though - as the Nokian eNtyre seems to be no longer available.

They are exactly the two reasons I dont rate them! Overall wet weather traction isnt great either unless you are going straight and theres no standing water. As mentioned above though it is interesting how different people have such wildly different views on the same tyre. Surely they dont produce them with different compounds so it must be the human element that causes the difference in view? I think a lot of people are overly amazed when a new tyre with 8mm of fresh rubber feels so much more grippy, quieter..... than the replaced three year old one which was down to 2mm of tread! Of course it will! :giggle:

Down to just under 4mm on all 4 of my P Zero Rossos now (24000 miles). I agree that when new, I thought that their wet weather performance was very good, dry performance excellent (and I have also subjected the car to some fairly lively treatment on the race circuit when used as safety car).

However, whilst dry performance is still excellent, wet weather grip is slowly deteriorating, I particularly notice the ability to clear standing water has reduced significantly. How much of this is due to the tread pattern/tyre compound and how much is simply due to the tread blocks now being shallower I really don't know, though I suspect the latter is the main cause.

One major drawback with the P Zero Rossos is their poor performance on snow. Several people commented here about poor grip in winter, whereas those Yeti owners on standard fit Dunlops seemed pretty impressed. In 2010 I found out to my cost just how poor the P Zero Rossos were in snow - having lost control at little more than walking pace on a level road and kerbing both nearside alloys. I now have winter tyres standing-by of course, but next year I shall be looking for 4 new summer tyres - and at the moment I don't know what to go for!

I'm using Kumho's and have been very pleased with those. Even worn they seem to shift water well and have coped more than adequately with all that I have put them through; mud, rocks, snow and water.

That's interesting graham. Which Kumhos have you got - there seems to be more than one 17" version currently on sale, though some may be a superseded tyre of course.
