One fog light/DRL on

Featured Replies

On several occasions when driving at night, I have pulled into a car park and been told that only one fog light is on, while the engine is running. The point is that the fog lights are not switched on. I cannot tell if it is fogs or DRL and it has applied to both sides. All lights work when they should, so the bulbs are fine. I am not talking about parking lights as these only come on after the ignition is turned off. Turning the wheel and using the indicator appear to be the cause, but I cannot find anything in the lights section of the handbook. I don't think that this is part of the cornering function.

Has anyone else experienced this?

It's meant to do that. Look up "Fog lights with the function CORNER" in the manual (page numbered 47 in the latest version online, actual page 48 in Adobe Reader).

Sounds normal to me!

Read the manual again - it tells you in there about 'cornering fogs' :)

And they are excellent too! They only work under a certain speed, and (just to help further) they both come on at night when you select reverse.

And I still have to think twice when someone tells me that I've got a light out - when in reality it's the cornering fog light that's illuminated.

You'll find nearly all higher spec versions of VW group cars now have cornering fogs, and also some Mercs & BMW's.

Indeed, it's very common these days so I'm surprised that people have been commenting to the OP about it.

Mine do just that every morning when I turn into the underground car park at work. The very nice security guy -who must have seen this effect 50-60 times when he is on rota duty down there- waved me down last week to point out I had one lamp on.

Some people baffle more easily than others!

My Daughter's Seat Ibiza 3 cylinder Eco has it - and that's almost their basic spec !!

Yes for some reason SUK see it as a money spinner and have corner fog on the options list, rather than standard for almost all models and levels of trim with fogs fitted, whereas Seat included it as part of the fog package without extra charge.

As I understand it anyone with VCDS can activate it by ticking a box; SUK will charge you £140 ish to get the factory to do it :bandit:

You are correct Tim.

Mine didn't have "cornering fogs" but a quick visit to Richard in Newtown and it was soon reprogrammed.

Thanks guys, for your illuminating responses. I just cannot see the purpose of adding a single fog light when turning a corner at night when it isn't foggy. I certainly haven't noticed any extra light in addition to the xenons.

Me too. VCDS kindly applied and my SE plus has cornering lights. Really useful for turning into my drive

I've noticed my cornering fogs doing their thing quite a lot recently, now that I'm commuting home in the dark. Remember that fog lights are supposed to be aimed lower than headlights, and have a rather more diffuse beam, so they light up the road and the kerb just in front and slightly to the side of the car - handy for lower speed manoeuvres when that alloy wheel-eating pothole in the gutter half way round the corner is hiding in the shadow outside the core of the dipped headlight beam.

My 2 year old Ibiza had them but it seems that most of the new ones have it as an extra. Over the last few years some of the VAG cars have seen std equipment shuffled over to the options list.
