under powered tdi ?

Featured Replies

hi there, i've owned an octavia 1.9 tdi for just over a year now and tinkered with it now and then, ie, turbo stripped and cleaned, agr valve, inlet manifold etc and have been happy with the car and getting good mpg. the mileage is 116000 miles. however, i drove my mothers old fabia with half the mileage - 1.9 tdi so assuming the same engine as both cars are the same age but was supprised at how much more responsive it was in accelerating compared to mine. i know the fabia is a lighter car but this was very noticable. i'm just wondering if my turbo is getting tired, its sounds ok although i have noticed a delay when accelerating hard. i'm still happy with the car i just feel that i'm loosing out on some power that i should have. any ideas ?

90 / 110 / 130

Any fault codes on your Octy? Does the actuator arm on the turbo still move freely? Could be a faulty MAF, dirty airfilter, failing CTS, dodgy MAP sensor.

could be yours is 90bhp, hers may be 110 or 130 as mbames referred to.

At your mileage a maf sensor would be a good thing to change anyway, and makes a good bit of difference even if its not 'faulty'

both cars are 110bhp, just cleaned the turbo today, nice and free, dont know of any codes, never had it checked, no warning lights on dash. are these maf sensors a dealer part only ?

thanks for replying to my query, just noticed your car pics, very nice, my octys an orange metalic colour but i purchased a black vrs spoiler locally for the tailgate. i'm now thinking of spraying the standard alloys satin black to help with the black and orange theme, plus it will help to mask the dreaded brake dust !

here she is now after a vrs overhaul

oh and search ebay etc for maf but make sure its a genuine bosch

No, but buy a genuine one, not an ebay cheapy. My A3 110 TDi got slow, no codes stored, new MAF made it much quicker. Quick test is to unplug the MAF, performance should get much worse, if it doesn't, replace it. Best test is to log output with VCDS, MAF expected and actual, they should be similar....

When you unplug a good MAF, the performance will be little different except at sustained, on boost throttle (such as accelerating up a hill in 4th/5th).

Often the performance will improve across the rev range when you unplug a faulty MAF so this is a better test.

I agree with cjb - get a genuine MAF - better to check with VCDS

i'm showing my lack of knowledge here, what is VCDS ?

Am I not right in thinking that they didn't do the older (non-PD) 110 TDI engine in the Fabia?

Pretty sure the only diesel engines they did in a Fabia were either 1.9 SDI (70hp), 1.4 PD TDI, 1.9 TDI PD100 or PD130. If it's a 1.9 TDI then it will be a PD100 and although less power much more torque.

Correct. I'm assuming it's not the Fabia VRS (PD130) but the PD100. The 0-60 times are about the same (TD110 has the edge over the PD100).
