Cotton filter whistle

Featured Replies

just fitted the green cotton filter to my fabia vrs, and have instantly noticed a difference in the way it revs more freely when in netural, not sure about any other gains, but sounds better. a bit more grunty i think. one thing im not to sure of though, is the car now seems to have a low whissle sound/ hum. (not the turbo). must be the filter. does any one else experience this. is it a carrecteristic of the filter, only hear it when idling.

Hmmmm, Not sure?

I just fitted my one too, to be honest dont really notice any difference in sound/free-er revving whilst on idle?

Neither is there any funny noise!!

Cant go wrong fitting it i wouldnt of thought??

Is the filter in snugly - ie no air escaping past the sides of it?

A whistle?? I'm just imagining standing next to the car in idle listening to some low grunt with a whistle melody to it

Maybe you fitted it wrong..

Hmm, mine has a whistle/hiss when idling too and it's still standard (just got the filter ordered today :D ) is this any concern or is it common?? If I raise the revs slightly from idle, it goes away, car seems to be performing normally otherwise.

just opened the top of the air box again to see if i could have fitted it wrongly. the thing is all you do is lift out the old filter and place the new one on the lip, you dont push it down into the airbox do you? any way you cant get it the wrong way round because of the shape. the only thing i could see when i exposed it again was the new filter may not cover the lip i one place completly. but then i had a fiddle with it and put the lid back on, and noise has gone. has any one else experienced this problem with the filter possibly being not quite the correct size etc.

You can get a turbo spin-up whistle, most pronounced when the car is cold that though

A few people have reported that the Green filter doesnt fit correctly in the airbox, mine seems fine however.

i would start the engine and see if you can hear/feel any air being sucked in round the airbox lid.

no suction around the box felt. and the noise has gone since i had a fiddle and stretch of the filter, should be ok i think.

I'm gonna print off the instructions and have a go at fitting it once I have it. Hopefully it should be a pretty quick job as I've only got a short lunch break :D

Interesting....

I'll go check the seating of my standard filter, see if that could be it. Still in about 5 days, my new filter should arrive so I'll definately find out then :)

apparently the green cotton filters do not seal very well in the ibiza/fabia air boxes according to some threads i have red on the seat forums. it's because the seal is formed by the top of the filter which over hangs the lip of the box unlike other panal filters in other cars which are a snug tight fit, the fabia one drops in and rests on the lip and has some movement. i had to do a bit a pulling and stretching (delicatly mind) to get it to over hang all bits of the box. once the lids on i think it forms a good enough seal though.

You will get a whistle when changing up through the gears and lifting off in between, but can't say that iv'e noticed or even checked when stationary

You won't need instructions :P Unscrew two retaining screws on right of air box. Lift lid of air box. Lift out old filter. Put in new filter. Screw in retaining screws. :D Should take a couple of mins ;)

......... unless you have an upper strut brace and then it's a right pain in the ar$e :rofl:

When I tried to get a Green Filter my Octy I did'nt like the crappy fit or the quality of the filter, I ended up getting a K&N for it, better quality and perfect fit. Why is everyone going for the Green ones now ?

Green are less oily than the K+N's so in theory they should be safer and not destroy the MAF :D

Impossible. K&N specialize in the production of filters so whatever it contains doesn't destroy the MAF, and it wouldn't be recommended by mechanics and car pros who've been in the industry the past 2 decades.

There is a special way to clean the filters too, and you do it only after every 70,000kms or something along those figures.

The K&Ns are by no means a dangerous product ;)

I seem to remember another one which was more like a sponge and that could crumble & fall in - the K&Ns aren't like that and as you say they've got a good rep anyway :D

I'm not doubting they're good quality filters, but the trouble is they are oilier than comparable filters from Green. MAFs these days tend to be made of a hot wire film which is not very durable and easily damaged by oil (examples are MY99-00 Impreza turbo's). I believe Andy Ellis on here also had a MAF failure whilst running a K+N filter.

70,000 km cleaning intervals?! My filter is filthy after 10,000km's and I would definitely not leave it that long between cleans!

Chris

The Green filter one says: 7000-10000 kilometers which is about 5000 miles or so.

I'd go for cleaning it every 5k miles, easy to remember then ;)

I would agree with the oil issue. Before i bought the Green i read quite a bit about which one to go for. I had no problems with my previous car running a K&N but i can vouch for the fact that they are olied up a lot more than the Green, so to play safe i opted. :)

I haven't fitted a performance air filter, but I have ust had the airbox off on my furby and the butterfly that opens to let air in is has quite a lot of oil spattered on it. Is this likely to be a bad thing for the MAF (I might be a newbie but what does this stand for?)

I believe is coming from a camshaft overspill, so I have been told in a different thread. Should I try and stop this? I am looking into getting a performance air filter cos the 1.4 16V engine sounds pretty good as it is, but could do with a nice growl (I have been told that if I'm on the phone while giving it some (handsfree of course) it sounds like a 360 Modena!!)

Strangely the Green filter seems to have smoothed performance and it does rev more easily now without it seemingly running out of breath.

My concern about the green filter is that it looks very transparent; how effective is it at filtering ? This may a minor problem on race engines that are rebuilt after a race, but on a road engine designed to run constantly for hours for 10k/20k between filter changes?

K&N have a large disclaimer(well I guess they would) on their website about MAF sensor damage.

10/20k - nope, as posted 7000-10000 kilometers between cleaning.

It is ESSENTIAL to clean it then however as otherwise it will go wrong.

Similarly the paper filter (original) was removed at 5k and was pretty filthy, that needs changing officially at 10k miles I believe, but I would change it a lot sooner than that based on how dirty it already was.
