Nexus 7 or similar to run as HU

Featured Replies

Hi there

Some time ago I was looking around for a HU upgrade for my to-be MK2 vRS and I saw someone had managed to mount a nexus 7 tablet where your HU would normally sit and wirelessly connected to the OBD. It could be used for the standard HU functions but also for live fed telemetry from the car using dials and gauges on I presume a specially built app or something of the kind.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this or any ideas how it could be done?

I was looking into this earlier v interested !

Any news on this or links for futher information

They were probably just using a bluetooth OBD adapter and an app called Torque.

Got it on my phone using a cheapo bluetooth OBD adapter off ebay.

Yeah saw the cheap bluetooth OBDII connectors, its just I wondered if anyone had done a really half decent set up like in the video posted previously. I would want to be able to just slide in and out every time i got in and out of the car.. but feeling it would cost a lot of the cradling ideas. :(

Hoping someone had already taken the plunge and tried it with a tablet

You could go for the Brodit cradle for the Nexus 7 http://www.dsldevelo...odit-Holder.asp accompanied by a ProClip. Not the same positioning, but you get to access the headunit at the same time unlike in the video.

If you have bluetooth fitted to your car, you can then pair with the Nexus 7 and play music.

I'd be interested to hear people's experiences of OBD bluetooth adapters and the Torque app. I assume it would be possible to pair to two devices at once eg. car and OBD adapter, never tried to pair to more than one device though.
