Whats the diffrences between VCDS lead and a ODB2 lead?

Featured Replies

Im looking into buying a lead to do some changes in the VCDS for my new Skoda Fabia.

But i cant seem to find information on what the actual diffrences is between a cable from for example ross-tech and a regular noname ODB2 lead? I already have a ODB2 lead that ive used for my motorbike but would that do it if i bought the software from ross-tech?

Here in Sweden the basic VCDS lead and software costs about 400euro from the Swedish retailer.. So im hoping to escape a bit cheaper than that..

if you want to use VCDS then you need to buy the Ross-Tech cable, there is no other way since VCDS looks for the Ross-Tech cable and will not work without it. The OBD2 lead you have will plug into the car, but the software will not work and neither will VCDS.

Check the Ross Tech site they do a list of cables suitable to particular models, the Hex-Can cable seems the most popular.

An OBDII set up for a VAG car will only provide you with emissions related system failures. That is the only thing required by law under OBDII.

A VAG level tool will give full access to all modules whether or not the module has faults that emissions related.

Ross-Tech VCDS is full VAG. The factory tool costs thousands...

OBDII interfaces do not work with full VCDS - you must have a genuine VCDS interface to work because the license for the software is electronically encoded in the interface.

I believe the Fabia will work with our VCDS-Lite product. You need a KKL style interface that you can buy on eBay. Look for one that is compatible with VAG-COM 409 or VCDS-Lite. Then you should be good to go.
