tyres.....again ventus prime review

Featured Replies

hi all,

i'm not a common contributor on this forum, but a yeti owner since 2010. My artic monster now is up to 32k miles and finally the rear tyres were at their limit, thank god!!!

i wasn't a great fan of the oe goodyears. I must mention that The fronts were replaced long ago with hankook ventus.....i've been dead impresssed with these much quieter

better wet grip and just more confidence inspiring characteristics, plus importantly a damn side cheaper than main stream brands, wow as per the fronts it improved the back end behaviour of the car, it always felt as if the back of the car was sliding when i knew it wasn't. So if anyone else is considering new tyres and ventus prime 2's come up on the search then from my opinion you can do a lot worst than these......Oh yes downsides, i nearly forgot! I do think wear won't be so good, but to be honest i prefer softer tyres as an ex motorcyclist and racer (rtn to biking may be afoot, not old but two mates dying just dampered the enthusiasm).

Anyway hope this helps!!! My one thread a year has been maintained ;-)

Thanks for the review, likewise prefer my winter Hankook's to the summer factory fit Conti's; far better wet weather handling even factoring in their winter pattern.

hey no problem....i also forgot to mention road noise is much improved...the figures indicate 71db with the new eec regs for tyre labelling. Oh yes when lookingfor tyres guys check this cos you may find the top brands are not as good as you think :

My widowed sister-in-law only drives about 3,000 PA and rarely exceeds 55 mph but lives in a rural village at high elevations in Yorkshire, her car needs 4 new tyres and she has asked me what I suggest. I am thinking that she would be better off buying a set of winter tyres to give her security in the winter months but she would have to keep them on all year (buying 2 sets of tyres is out of the question).

Has anyone run winter tyres in the summer, if so then any problems?

Why don't you try "All season" tyres, best of both then?

Agreed.

Goodyear Vector's have had good reports from several here.

Thanks Carisbrook and Llanigraham - hadn't thought of all seasons, good idea.

When I was visiting big sis in Frankfurt this late summer, I couldn't help but notice how many cars had winter tyres on - most looked like they had been on a while, rather than just being slightly previous. Given the average German drivers propensity for pressing on, it would seem they have no qualms about keeping their winters on all year.

Also noticed how many of winters were cheaper brands. Money is not usually a deciding factor in the part of Frankfurt where big sis lives.

Hi

I got my greenline in september and was not happy with the onboard conti's. Given our location I need to be sure that we can stay on the move. Previously had a set of winter tyres and wheels but didnt want to do this again, as the storage is an issue! So having done a bit research I ended up buying a set of Vredestein Quatrac 3 all season tyres. The difference was immediate - no skippyness around the back end and no significant noise problem. In the Auto Bild All Season TyreTest these came out top. When I bought them they seemed to be hard to source in the UK. I ended up buying from Poland based Oponeo who were the cheapest (prices change by the day according to the rate of exchange) Despite reservations as to ordering from abraod they were fantastic, quick delivery and no issues. I havent done a full winter yet but impressed with these so far - I would definatley recommend them! Also they come with the snowflake mark on the side so thus qualify as winter tyres in countries such as italy where these are a requirement.

This is what i had with the original goodyears fitted. I spoke to a friend about it that runs a bmw dealership and he stated that goodyears have a reputation for going hard and losing their grip after a while....

Continental advised me to run winters all year round if I couldn't afford 2 sets........

When I was working for a tyre manufacturer I have used winter tyres for extended periods in the summer and found them quite satisfactory in general use both for wear and handling. Obviously if you are biased towards high speed driving there are better options but Expatman's relative probably isn't (if its stereotyping I apologise).

Seems like a good compromise to me where the safety benefits in winter outweigh minor improvements in the summer.

Hi! Earlier, I posted a reply about tyres and my change from Goodyears to Kumho Solus 17s in a topic about "Dunlops on a Yeti", I think. Apart from great experience with these tyres, I strongly recommend Yeti owners get a full laser set-up check done. My Yeti which we had from new, was so far wrongly set up that the tyres were maming a noise, pulling to one side etc. Apparently VAG cars are often out of true.
