Clutch slipping :(

Featured Replies

At the end of the 50 limit where the m5 and m4 meet I dropped it into 4th and gave it beans. At almost 70 I noticed the clutch slipped and the revs went up to almost 3K before dropping again suddenly :(

Anyone know how much an updated clutch costs an where I can get it done in Bristol? I'd rather upgrade so I can squeeze more out of the engine at a later date.

I know someone who did this recently, went for a solid flywheel and a sachs paddle clutch. Kit was £600 there or there abouts and budget £200-£300 for fitting. Also definitely buy a new slave cylinder and release bearing as these are concentric and if the slave goes, its all gotta come off again.

Close to a grand will get you a good kit fitted

Bugger! I might have to nurse it everywhere for a month. It's only done 112k :/

You could just replace the clutch and not squeeze more out of it. That'd be down to 4-500 quid. Clutches can last up to 600k miles or 5k miles, all depends on how its been driven all its life.

I suppose at the moment I do mostly do motorway driving. Plus I lack the cash to squeeze more out at the moment. I was thinking stage 1 remap soon, but I guess a standard clutch would cope.

stage 1 0n standard i believe is absolutely fine, at least the flywheel is anyway, you can buy a little uprated clutch kit for not too much

I used to work at vauxhall and we had a bsm car in for a clutch at 200 miles! Not 200k just 200.

Cheers dude :) I shall see when I can get it booked in somewhere

Standard Clutch will be fine up to 300 lbs ft of torque, driver dependant so if your only going stage one just replace it with a standard one

Learners eh? I have been teaching SWMBO in it a little which wouldn't have helped. Her clutch control is atrocious (don't tell her I said that). My burnin off the lights probably didn't help either mind

its all clutch slip behaviour yes :giggle:

I've asked two garages, first quoted £919 including vat, the other £545+vat (£654). Come to think of it, neither said how long it would take. Any estimations time wise?

Speak to skoda and find out there price and time scale

I'd say drop the car off at 9:00 and collect at 5:30, any problems it will be 12:00 the following day.

No more than 1 to 2 days providing everything goes smoothly.

Clutch and flywheel "book time" is just under 5 hours.

I'm in similar position to you now. Need a new clutch and possible flywheel, but unsure what to buy! I do have mine mapped to over 300lbs of torque, hence why my clutch is bu**ered!

I've found the following excluding fitting & are NEW:

Skoda OEM clutch & DMF = £775 (inc release bearing)

Awesome GTI Heavy Duty Sprung Clutch & Solid Flywheel = £625

Sachs Clutch Kit & Flywheel = £419

Now what sould we go for?

The flywheel is probably fine if its only just started happening, so just replace the clutch plate.

How comes the Sachs is so cheap? Is it still oem spec? Or uprated?

Must be OEM spec. There's no way the uprated one would be that cheap, the standard RRP for Sachs Race + flywheel is just shy of £1000, no one is gonna drop that price by over 50% just like that.

Can you tell me if this looks okay, as you've got me thinking now?!

Sachs Clutch Kit £155.94

Sachs Dual Mass Flywheel £299.94

Do I need anything else i.e. release bearing etc?

Cheers

If by "looks OK" you mean "will they fit", then yes. But they're stock items so will be good for only around 300lbft at best (bear in mind that buying an "OEM equivalent" Sachs from ECP isn't guaranteed to be the same as buying an actual OEM Sachs from VW). Doesn't look like it includes a new release bearing, so you'd need one of those.

Use 'CLUTCH25' get 25% off and it'll be around £340.

That's great, cheers for that info.

And this code too - many thanks mate

Oli, give Abtech in Totton a call, VAG specialists and did a cracking job on my little 1.9 when it went in for full service, cam belt etc etc. Good price too ;)

What's the book time on clutch and flywheel job?
