Why not try going to the party and not drinking? Might be a whole new experience for you!

Corollary question is what are you taking the antibiotics for and is it something you're going to share with all the other party-goers?

I have been on these and others for the last 8 weeks. If it don't say "Avoid Alc" on the packet you should be ok! :)

I just thought I'd put the alternative viewpoint' date=' like you did with the chap with the brakes question yesterday .... :P

A quick Google reveals a few articles most of which say there's no specific interaction between amoxycillin and alcohol. Here's quite a helpful one.

Yeah it's fine. If anything it will make the antibiotics slightly less effective.

Matts right, it will just make them less effective.

Yep. Nothing bad will happen it will just reduce the effectiveness of the medication slightly.

Keep taking them and don't stop taking them just for the night.

aahhhh so it could make me sick but then again so coudl lots of alcohol....i tihkn i will just sup a few beers and stay away from and shot based drinking games...

roll on staurday!

Drugs and alcohol don't mix. Period. Try going without having a drink, it's not like you were born with a heineken in your hands ;)

Lol....

no point stopping them as the antibiotics will still be in your system anyway.

i had a few beers on the same pills and felt fine.

its when they dont work and the doctors gives you some that have "DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WITH THESE" that you want to worry.

Apaprently, it can cause some problems http://www.drugs.com/amoxicillin.html

But unless it says "avoid" or even worse "do not drink" you should be OK. There is one antibiotic that's used as an ingredient in the stuff they give alchoholics, and the results if you mix the two are supposed to be spectacular!

FWIW I presume for a gum infection the doc has told you to do a salt-rinse mouthwash? (Half-teaspoon in half glass of hot water and spit out). If you negate the effect of the antibiotics by drinking, you'll be back at square one. Why not ask for alcohol-free beers and let the party spirit make up the difference? :)

I had this dylema myself on millenium night, Should I be sober on millenium night and take my amoxicillin for a tooth abscess or should I get rat-harsed like the rest of the civilised world?

mmmm? ....absolutely banjaxed , making friends with every lampost between the party and my humble abode on my travels home...!!

I wouldn't worry if it's only for one night, Alcohol will just temporarilly stop the amxoycillin from working but will not cause side effects, other than not helping your, ahem, "GUM" infection from healing as quick. I would keep taking them anyway.

You're no more likely to get a dodgy alcohol/penecillin reaction than if you went to a cheese and wine party and partook in a pongy blue smelly mould ridden thing washed down with a couple of bottles of vin D'pee.

On the up side, I would stick to beer, apparently the 'yeast' has antibiotic properties.

Salt/water mouth rinse is okay but a nice 'single malt gargle' is better and you can swallow it afterwards.

Personally I think the words 'Alcohol', 'free' and 'beer' should never be used in the same sentence unless it's on a sign saying "FREE - any high ALCOHOL BEER all day"

Can't see the point of AF beer, might as well drink the pub-dogs pish.

Hello. I'm a doctor. In fact a doctor who specialises in alcohol and drug misuse (not me doing the misusing, the patients).

No dangerous interaction between amoxicillin and alcohol although the question is, if you are ill with a gum infection should you really be drinking? Alcohol may reduce the absorbtion of the drug from your stomach and render it less effective. Don't stop taking the antibiotics and then restart or fail to complete the course. That is how bugs become resistant to antibiotics.

One antiobiotic that you absolutely must not drink whilst taking is metronidazole (flagyll). It is commonly used for dental infections. if you drink on this one you get a very unpleasant reaction similar to that with the drug antabuse used to treat alcoholics.

My advice would be either don't drink at all or if you must don't get completely bladdered.

By the way, I have a 2004 Fabia VRS.

Mate, I don't wanna sound like a party pooper but my advice would be not to drink at all. The thing is your gun infection must be pretty nasty in order for the dentist to have prescribed amoxycillin and unless you have serious will power (I know I don't) and the fact you're meeting up with your old mates, the chances are, if you aim to drink a few (you are going to end up gettin wasted). People will accept it if you say you can't drink for that evening because of x but if you say "oh Im just going to have a couple", they'll be like "Oh go on have another and another" then b4 you know it you're doing the full range of spirits a la drinking games.

I always found that amoxycillin increases stomach sensitivity, so the morning after has the potential to be alot more uncomfortable for you. Also your gum infection is likely to be prolonged as the antibiotics effectiveness will be reduced.

Saying all that though, at the end of the day its your body and you call the shots as to whether you do or not. Just make sure you don't regret your decision the next day :D

That's the one! I was on it for a month with a root infection. It didn't solve the problem, and I couldn't drown my sorrows, either!

Probably did my liver no end of good......:D

I don't mean to be an old fart here, but if your on medication, you really ought to avoid drinking to excess. A couple of pints might be fine, but more than this could cause problems for you or the treatment. You should always complete a course of antibiotics if you want to get better quickly without the bugs building up resistance. And if this drug's effectiveness is reduced upon alcohol consumption for a period, the same thing may happen. Look what a mess were in with MRSA in hospitals because of inappropriate antibiotic use.

Be warned also that some individual's sensitivity will increase during the treatment period and part of that sensitivity could be to do with your stomach lining. Who knows, overdosing on alcohol with an already stressed stomach if your a susceptible individual, could give you a bad belly ache the next day, worse still be a potential catalyst for ulcers. Anyway, my advice, take your antibiotics as directed, eat plenty and drink in moderation if you really must.
