Hmm, this one's a chin stroker!

I've just experienced a 'Twilight Zone' moment and can't fathom a reasonable explanation.

A year ago, I posted here that someone had stolen 2 wheel nuts, 1 from each wheel, from the near side of what was then my 4 month old Scout.

No biggy, replaced them and got on with my life.

Fast forward a year and the car went in for its first service on the variable plan. Whilst it was in I asked to get all 4 wheels replaced due to the delamination issue with the polished proteus alloys.

When I picked the car up the service guy was in a jovial mood and was having a joke with me about hiding the locking wheel nut key. I had absolutely no idea what he was on about and was pushed for time so couldn't be bothered with his messing about. I told him the car never came with a locking wheel nut key, OR EVEN locking wheel nuts. I 'know this' because when I picked up the car when bought, I handed my 2 keys over for the car I traded in and the little box with 4 spare wheel bolts and locking nut key and asked the salesman where the locking nut key was for the new Skoda. He said the new cars didn't come with locking wheel nuts as they end up going missing and most folk just use RAC or Skoda assist to change wheels these days. Fair enough I thought, I took him for his word. I now know this to be incorrect.

So, the service guys have tried all their 'master' locking wheel nuts, successfully found mines and changed the 2 wheels on the offside but when changing the near side found there to be no locking wheel nuts!?!?

This was duly reported back to me, now, I can't figure out what the frig has happened.

When I bought the car, it deffo came with four wheels and all 5 studs were there, or at least the plastic covers were as I took photo's just in case I noticed any defects after I drove off the forecourt.

I now have a car with 4 new wheels, 2 have locking wheel nuts and I have no key, now either I only ever had 2 or the 2 that were stolen were the locking wheel nuts, if that's the case I hope the thief buys a euromillions ticket because he is one jammy sod to have the right key for the nuts!

Plan of action now is to take the car back and see if the dealership will spare me a young apprentice mechanic for 5 minutes to remove the remaining locking wheel nuts, hopefully for gratis, and replace the nuts with a new set so that I have a key.

Anyone else come across such a confusing state of affairs?

Sounds like your the one who should be buying the lottery ticket. If it was most of us, we'd find out at the most inhospitable and inconvenient time.

I have been told that there aren't too many different keys needed for the VAG locking wheel nuts.

Fair point, think I better get this sorted this week before it's too late

I'm driving from Edinburgh down to Wales in a few weeks, would be in the perpetual bad books with good lady if anything happened to the car that weekend!!

When I got my VRS 5yr ago I went on holiday a week later. Got home and thought I'd wash my new car.

Got to the back wheel and lo and behold 4 bolts not five.

Went to the dealer where the receptionist accused me of trying to pull a fast one (why?) and that my locking wheel bolt must have been stolen when it was in the airport secure car park. ****** says I. They gave me a new one and I fitted my own McGards anyway.

My guess was that it was either never fitted in the pdi or it was fitted but never torqued up and it fell out.

Anyway that's as close to your story as I've heard.
