Hot Corolla Diesel On Way

It took a while, but Japanese makers are finally seeing the advantages of diesel power. Not only will Lexus's IS CC sip from the black pump, but Toyota is planning a performance Corolla oil-burner, too.

Set to debut in 2007 with the next-generation model, the diesel flagship will draw inspiration from the current T Sport. Merging the range-topper's sharp handling with an oil-burner's punchy pace and economy, the car aims to follow the lead set by Skoda's Fabia vRS, and offer a tempting package for keen drivers.

Two high-powered variants will be based around the 2.2-litre turbocharged engine, giving buyers the choice of 148bhp or 175bhp.

If you can't wait for the hot hatch, the Verso compact-MPV will get a power boost later this year. The seven-seater will be available with 136bhp and 175bhp versions of Toyota's 2.2 diesel unit, both tuned to optimise refinement and economy

I like the Corolla, feels so solid to drive and will no doubt be bullet-proof. Shame their current diesel is so pants :(

The wheels look naff to, need som serious spacers! Can see this being a big seller though if priced right.

Not a bad car, although very plain (admittedly the Furby is a little, no offence intended)

cooooool! Toyota Corrola....Worlds most boring non-ept car.....Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Very interesting! If it's a T-Sport, it'll definitely handle better than the vRS too! ;)

Chris

Actually I've heard otherwise about it...it's actually a little bigger than the Fabia, and the T-sport being 180+bhp doesn't perform like one. Saying what I've heard...

I've just had a current t-sport as a hire car and omfg

good cd player and interior too

boring choice but a well informed one

I shall let you all know what I think when I get my hands on one. If the T-Sport is anything to go by, I won't be expecting too much. I am pretty sure my Fabia will be safe to stay with me a bit longer. ;)

Why does the Corolla always get called boring? I think it looks good, especially in 3 door variant.

I part exed my Corolla for my Furby vRS. I have always liked Toyotas. My wife has a celica. Funny. She wont drive the furby unless she has to as she finds it to fast :)

Customer care is superb as is their legendary reliability. I will watch this one but my Furby will take some beating for driver enjoyment.

The last one wasn't so hot pace wise although I agree they look good and I don't think they are boring.

This thread relates to the new diesel engine being popped in to spice things up.

IIRC they were talking of a price in the region of

hmmmm... 175 BHP gets my vote, but the price is stupid...

It actually does somewhat look like a Fabia..only bigger..

i think the corrola is bland boring and pants, 3 door 5 door t-sport or whatever, does nothing for me...........but then.........i do see 200 odd everyday at work

but in reply to the engine.......like the article said, and from what i've been told be toyota members, the engine is blooomin quick!!

the avensis has the engine now, so go for a test drive in one, then consider the engine in a small chassis car!!!

I hope Toyota have done a lot of work on their Oil burners, cos the one I took for a spin a few months ago was double pants. It was a 2.0 D4D Avensis T. Spirit. Nice spec and all that, but drove like a Tea Trolley laden with cakes, no acceleration at all, an absolute slug.

At least you wouldn't go hungry :D
