Invalidate your warranty - for changing the light bulbs?

Featured Replies

Matty I agree however this is what the mechanics/ dealerships do say ? All the faults that may occur in the headlight ie wiring or burnt out switches that are integral to the headlight unit, will be voided under the warranty for that unit ? I agree if the bulb is rated similar to oem this shouldn't be an issue, however the dealerships seem to disagree ?

Although I haven't got the EU 'block exemption' appendix to hand, if a bulb has the correct wattage/form factor it cannot void the warranty, even if the bulb becomes open circuit, short circuit or intermittent.

Yes

So the dealer (in Liverpool?) is offering to fit for £100 a lighting set that's illegal?

On the other hand, has anyone actually had an MOT failure due to HID's fitted without the other items?

Hids are not illegal, if they are factor y fitted or they are fitted with the correct safety equipment i.e levellers and washer unit, the new legislation will start soon or may even have started as its becoming absolutely dangerous on the roads now, cars being fitted with DIY hids and blinding oncoming traffic, although some mot centres and garages may not fail you, if the police catch you and you've had an mot with them fitted the garage will also be liable and may loose their license, if done properly hids are fine but if they are fitted with non of the safety features they should be done

Will the dealership also refund the £100, remove the HID's and pay your fine when the law pulls you over?

Think back a few years ago to when window tint laws changed and many dealers were having to dig into their pockets to cover customers fines who made a big enough shout about it to them if thats how they had supplied them the car.

As for invalidating the warranty with the bulbs, won't the aftermarket bulb needed to be tested to proove it has caused the fault before any claim can be discarded by the manufacturer. Aslong as the customer is made aware they will be made to pay for said repair if the bulb is prooven to have caused the part to fail?

I think in regards bulbs its a blanket approach, headlight busted wiring burnt out? "May we point out sir these bulbs are not dealer fitted so warranty voided" this may be a stance they take, however I would defo take it to trading standards or small courts, as for the hids fitted for £100 its going to be a crappy one anyway IMO

Pretty obvious they are not illegal factory fitted (with the levellers/washers.)So has anyone who's retro -fitted them actually added levellers/washers to make them legal?...I doubt it.

I can see the self-levelling requirement...but what's the big deal about having washers?

I was quoted £1,200 for mine fitted golf gtd headlights tho

Levelling and washers are not required for the MOT, if they are fitted, then they must work, if they don't work they'll be failable WHEN they can get the legislation passed for all these new MOT items.

Nice to see that common sense has prevailed with regard to the original topic.

I'm pretty sure vag uses Bosch or osram not 100% sure tho,

SWMBO’s 60 plate TT has Philips H7 (Long Life) bulbs from the factory.

I said in my post Zenon bulbs, not HID's.

So, they're charging £100 for a pair of bulbs essentially... What is this world coming to???

Is it those dimwits at Alex Lawrie Skoda?

No it was Mitchells, I wouldn't go to Alex Lawrie even if you paid me, went to buy my car there and it was if they where doing me a favour by selling it to me...... and the dealers in Warrington was even worse.

I couldn't agree with you more, the Warrington dealership is indeed even worse than Liverpool's Alex Lawrie, if that's even possible. They're both just shockingly terrible.

I've had no experience with Mitchell's, Chester is a bit too far away, but still, what they charge for a pair of bulbs is preposterous.

To be honest Mitchells are brilliant, good aftersales and they actually remember you when you go back for a service etc.

They have a lounge with free drinks, snacks, magazines, books, Tv and internet, plenty to keep you occupied while the sort your car.

Having owned many makes of cars their prices for servicing, repair and parts are reasonable not the dearest.

Never heard as much rubbish.

Bulbs are classed as consumables and owner changeable, that's why the "Owners Handbook" explains to the owner how to change bulbs.

As long as you change bulbs to correct specification ie. Wattage, Voltage and CE Marked there is no way they would legally be able to refuse a warranty claim.

Many people wrongly assume these higher output bulbs are higher wattage, they are not.

If a dealer told me something like that I'd kill him with my laughter, on the spot!

Did he tell you you can only fill up at the local TESCO garage with Momentum only?

Steer clear of them!

This is what my vw dealer said ?

Seb, take me there and will laugh so laud and hard and for so long they will be begging me to leave the shop LOL.
