biting point changes after clutch change

Featured Replies

i recently had a clutch change. i had replaced the slave cylinder myself but when taking it to the garage they changed the clutch and master cylinder. the biting point for the clutch was down to the ground but after a few days settled an inch or so up. during travel round town it is ok but after long distances on motorway etc the biting point sinks back down to the floor. this means changing gears sometimes causes the gears to grind a bit.

i have since bled the system but it has the same problem.

what could be causing this? any ideas please?

thanks in advance :)

had something similar on my old Seat Toledo, turned out part of the clutch cable hadn't been put back correctly, worth having a look perhaps?

i thought it was a full hydraulic system? would not suprise me if they had not put something back properly considering they forgot a bolt holding the air filter housing and a strut from near the clutch to under the air filter was held on by one loose bolt with the other one rattling by the slave cylinder :(

I've just noticed this is in the 'General Maintenance' section. It'd be better suited to the Octavia 1 section, you'll get more views and a better answer. I didn't realise it was an all hydraulic system, sorry.

Sounds most likely to be air in the system caused by not being bled properly after replacing the master cylinder.

there are 2 bleed nipples on the master cylinder right under the resevoir, these often cause issues as people dont notice them there and dont bleed them

You need to power bleed the clutch at about 2bar(30psi).

The absolute minimum pressure needed to bleed air out of the clutch system is 1.5bar(23psi). I mention this lower pressure only because owners have successfully bled the clutch with a Gunson Eezibleed at 23psi (that's above the 20psi max pressure - you do it at your own risk).

Connect the power bleeder to the fluid reservoir and pressurize.

Bleed at least 100ml from the slave.

Close the bleeder and vigorously pump the clutch pedal at least 10 times (at least 20 if you are down at 1.5bar)

Bleed another 50ml from the slave.

Close the bleeder and pump the clutch pedal again.

Disconnect the power bleeder.

If you're just changing the fluid you may be able to use lower pressures but you won't drive air bubbles out.

thanks for that. i have an ezbleed system so will give that a go. i was always told to bleed from the slave cylinder. should i do it there or from the master?
