Someone else driving your car

Featured Replies

This doesn't happen very often, but last week my wife borrowed my car to have some new tyres fitted (didn't know bridgestones were so cheap) and obviously changed all the settings as she is a foot shorter than me.

Got in last night and its so difficult to get the seat back how I like it. In every car before this the seat just goes all the way back, but in the Octavia it would be uncomfortable.

Memory seats would be the only thing I could change if I had the chance as it takes a little bit of driving to put it right.

Anyone else have any bug bares about others driving their cars?

No, I don't let my wife touch the Octavia with a barge pole

Well, she did once own a Rover 214 for a few months before selling it because it was too big :)

The only bug bare I have is they are in the wrong seat ..... Drivers seat for me only lol ( it's still new and I'm protective of it at the mo )

No one else is allowed to drive mine. Exept when they have to eg. when it goes in for its service.

My mrs drives mine quite often. She has a Clio sport and I quite like taking it to work. But she does move the seat sheis only 5ft3 and I'm 6ft4 so that's annoying but she suffers the same when she gets her car back so it's all good

Mrs Grr is insured on mine but it's only in case of emergency.

For example, if we are out somewhere and I have a leg chewed off by a tiger,

if I am shot by terrorists or if I lose my sight due to being blowtorched in the face.

You know, stuff like that...

I drive hers regularly though. It never goes above 3000rpm otherwise.

I know what you mean. SWMBO is insured on my car (actually worked out cheaper than just me), she drove it for the first time last weekend (albeit just round an empty car park - she needs to pass her IMT driving test before I let her loose in it on the open road).

It wasn't her driving it and me in the passenger seat that was making me cringe but all the adjustments to the seating position she was making (like yours she's a lot slighter than I am).

I've just stopped wetting myself at this

A good rule is never borrow a car from someone you would not lend your own to.

My wife is insured for my VRS but she will not be driving it unless in an emergency, she has no luck when it comes to cars and with her old focus everyone just seemed to either run into it or hit it in the car park when she is shopping, so not taking a chance with mine. We have got rid of that car now and she has my 4 year old focus and hopefully fingers crossed no one hits that one as it is mint.

PS Probably jinked myself now.

Unfortunately the wife uses mine arguably more regularly than I do (that said I still manage to do the majority of the annual mileage in it) as she uses it for her daily commute while I get the dubious pleasure of a 125cc scooter for mine.

I am in the position where the car is mine, I pay the finance, insurance and all associated costs except the fuel and yet am given the third degree should I want to use it! I suppose I really should man-up a bit ;) (Mind you , she does let me play with her boobies so I can't complain too much :p )

My missus is insured on my car for the times I can't for whatever reason but only if she has to in all honesty.

Whilst she can drive a car, she really doesn't know how to drive a diesel properly and safely (looking after dmf etc)

it's fair to say I've had "a word" several times in the last few days I have been allowed out of the house (recovering from major op) has made me cringe and times :(

Only people I trust to drive my car is my parents. Both drive really well

Based on my experience all technicians that work at dealers are either 4 foot or 7 foot tall. Also I assume the first item on the service sheet is to completely change the seat position.

When swmbo drives my car next time I get in I bang my head on the sun visor and my knees on the steering wheel.

Yes this or rates the hell out of me. Dealer servicing seems the worst for it by a mile. If I have to drive someone elses car then all I do is move the seat forward or back so that it's easy for them to get their driving position back. Even with my dads car, and he has a totally different set up to me.

Have a friend who told me about when he had his A8 with the memory seats matched to the key - he only once used his wife's key by accident...lol

(Mind you , she does let me play with her boobies so I can't complain too much :p )

Chappers , under those rules my keys are available for her to drive mine lol.

My fiancée drives my Octavia probably more than me. It is "our" car though and we share it and both love it equally. I have no quarms with her driving it. I don't like anyone else driving it though.

And to the OP, my fiancée is 5"2' and always changes the seat position, mirrors etc - does my head in.

But like I say, its our car that we both equally enjoy.

Mrs got the VRS last week when the snow was down (her's is a 1 series BMW). She had it for one day to go 2 miles to work and 2 miles back.

Not only did she change every setting on the car, seats mirrors, radio everything, she knocked off the rear wiper (admittedly not that hard since the clip is broken) and filled it with ****. How much crap can you accumulate on a 10min commute? Quite a lot as it turns out.

At least this time she managed to hold back from kerbing it or getting the edges of the door scraped when she opens them next to a wall.

Mine always changes everything - even if she is just moving it off the drive! Don't even get me started on the amount of rubbish that they manage to accumulate in them. For some reason mine has now even started taking a coffee with her when she leaves for work in a morning as it has usable cup holders & an automatic gearbox - why? Just get up 5 minutes earlier and drink it at home. :wall:

Edited by Chappers.

Mine is insured and does drive it from time to time - like if I've had a drink or to share the driving on a longer trip. I am usually that comfortable with her driving that I can quite happily go to sleep whilst she is driving (she is a member of the IAM as well). Only thing that I have to remind her of is not to use the loud pedal too much when the engine is cold. She has a NA 1.8 MX-5 so no concerns about warming the oil for the Turbo before enthusiastic throttle use.

Often wonder why the ecu doesn't reign in the power until the oil has reached a decent temp, but I guess from a safety standpoint you may need in an emergency to give it full beans to get out of a situation, before it is up to temp.

The last time the Mad Wife drove mine she hit the telegraph pole at the top of our drive, it's only a very short drive, and the pole has been there for 40 years.

She didn't see it.

She saw the bill for a grand though.

Mind you she once demolished the porch at our old house in my 3 weeks old car.

We once got 2 new matching Polos, one each, and she bumped mine within an hour of having it.

I could go on, and on, and on ad infintum.

She has bumped every car we have ever had, and I have had a lot, a hell of a lot.

I'm going to cry now, i could have bought Brazil with the money she has cost me.

Ho Hum

When my sons started messing about with cars and spanners, they got their own. My garage had a sign, "When borrowing tools or cars, usual deposit applies". This was one testicle. Neither sons have ever driven any of my cars or used my spanners.

Mrs drives the Yeti more than me currently but she is the same height so never needs to change the seat etc :-)

My SWMBO has not driven the beast yet. She's bent every car we've ever had so I'm cr*pping myself at the thought. She claims to be multi tasking when in reality she's just not concentrating on her driving which is not for the feint hearted even if it's not even THEIR car. When they gave her a laptop at work they set her password as maddriver. My son keeps taking the p*ss asking if she's driven it yet. little **** can walk next time he wants a lift.

I drive the vRS very steadily when shes in it hoping she won't want a go but I fear I'm being delusional. I continually act like a cross between the scratch and stone chip police and the paranoid parker so I'm hoping against hope she decides it's better to drive/continue to abuse her Altea/mobile rubbish bin without fear of retrobution and leave me alone with my keys. I even polished it for her Saturday (mind you that's more of a sad git experiment on my part with combinations of AG resin polish, AG high dev wax, Collinite 845 and AG sealer to see which lasts longest)

Is there any hope......
