Interestingly, speaking to a main dealer the other day, it seems that one of the thieves' preferred ways into a car is to manipulate the door lock to trigger the convenience opening of the windows. Quick, simple and no damage!

Chris

On The MK I and previous passat at least, that's a doddle and as you say it's minimal damage.

Still a couple of snipped wires and it's dealt with.

You park backwards in your garage?

We always go in forwards due to the exhaust.

It is against the highway code to reverse onto a highway....and the speeds that corsaman goes down our 30mph road is unbeliveable. So I'd rather not get hit and allegedly, according to the IAM, it saves fuel and engine strain.

Or disable with vcds ;)

I don't know about yours but when locked, mine is deadlocked so if they smash a window, they will have to climb through the window as even the interior door handle won't work!

I don't know of any car that will deadlock with the engine running. For safety reasons the ecu generally blocks it.

Where's round my way? I am surprised at the number of people that actually leave their car in a steal-able place while inside the house with a cuppa!

No where is truly safe, and if stolen this way your insurance won't pay - regardless of locking the doors or not.

It was even colder yesterday morning.

Thought I'd be clever and put a small oil filled radiator in the car to do the job.

Worked a treat, but I burnt my hand taking the bloody thing out :o

You're right the car won't deadlock with the key in the ignition.

And yeh insurance wouldn't pay out. We live on a quiet road with no through traffic so not too worried.

Phil

Wind all the windows down then any potential thief wont be able to smash them and steal the car

Leave a mint on the dashboard so his bad breath won't stink the car out :D

Blimey, I'd kack myself having left a vessel full of very hot oil connected to live electrical supply overnight in my car !

I thought there is an aftermarket alarm system which can remotely start the engine and heaters with the car being fully locked.

Press a button while inside the house and in 5 minutes the car is as welcoming as your onesie :)

Not really possible with the imobiliser system. You would need to either disable the immob or permanantly fix the immob chip in range of the sensor.

Plus I think they are illegal in the UK or not covered by insurance can't remember which.

It would be easier to fit a webasto or similar diesel coolant heater that has a remote control.

Phil

^^ Oh, I didn't realise they were "illegal". On what grounds?

I thought there was some different "eype of immobiliser" used in such a system?

Send wife out in cold to scrape windows and get cars warm. whilst i watch from kitchen window smug with coffee in hand.

Equality its the future!

Crap, I knew I was doing something wrong when I was scraping SWMBO's car the other day !

They would at least need the built in immob disabling (if this is even possible I don't know) and that may have insurance implications.

I think it may have something to do with leaving the car running and unattended.

Phil

Here's Another one

Has anybody had this stuff installed?

But surely for insurance purposes that would consitute security upgrade and could potentially lower your premiums.

I spray on pre icer- wash and wipe and drive away.

I just did it in the morning. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving it in over night either.

My mate in Canada has one of these remote starters. Swears by it.

In the winter he can start the car a while before getting in so it's toasty warm and all defrosted, ready to go.

In the summer he parks with the aircon set to cold. Starting the car a few minutes before and he gets into a fridge. :)

Pretty much everyone has them over there. Not sure it would be worth the extra cost over here.

Double post.

Why does it keep doing that recently?

I had an auto start on a Clifford system.

If a door is triggered (as the alarm remains fully active) the engine immediately stops.

Should be insurance approved if installed by a recognised firm and correct documentation.

You can't leave a car unattended while running though can you?

To the letter of the law, no.

You would be committing the offence of quitting.

It is very rarely prosecuted though, and there would have to be some effect before any action was taken.

For example, the car moving without the driver with the potential for causing damage and or injury.

I believe the proper remote start products have a fail safe to prevent this occurring.

Open curtians, see frost - go back to bed after making cuppa.

Continue drinking tea and a portion if porridge until frost gone.

If frost persists, stay inside all day.

note to self, make sure all log baskets are filled on clear days!

Watch out doing this as 10 cars were stolen round my way this morning due to people leaving vehicles running

They can have it. I wouldn't risk it with our car though.

A lot say that the quicker the oil is hot the better protection so I get in and rev the nuts off mine. It heats up much quicker.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk whilst in a taxi rank
