Very warm water to defrost windscreen.

Featured Replies

For years i have used very warm water to defrost the windscreen when frozen up, then turn on windscreen wiper asap to get rid of any water.

Many people think this is nuts as apparently you can get a cracked windscreen, but this has never happened to me.

Any one else use this method ?

Yep - done exactly the same as you for years and never had an "incident"

Yup lol, boiling water is asking for trouble though, I go with hand warm water from the tap too :)

Not sure about "very warm" water, but suppose that depends on how hot that actually is!

I've also done this since I first learnt to drive. Heard many horror stories about windscreen cracking but this will only happen if the water is too hot.

Hi, Yes would class very warm water at possible to put hand in !

Third full boiled kettle, then brimmed with cold. Seems to be the perfect temperature, and also never had any issues. I follow after with my "blade" to wipe the moisture from the surface. Also if you keep dribbling the warm water on the screen, once all the ice has gone, I've found it re-freezes less (or not at all) as you are gradually warming up the surface. I never defrost whilst the engine is running on tickover as car warms up more efficiently whilst driving.

I use an 1800W hair dryer - on my wife's Fabia.

I start the engine and push a button, a few minutes later the ice on my windscreen is water. I use warm water on the other windows and haven't broken any yet.

Used warm water for many many years

Hilarious watching people scraping their windows!!

another warm water user here, not had any problems either. When I say warm, I use the water that was left in the kettle 2 hours after it was boiled, with a topup of cold.

Ran out of de-icer this morning so I chucked concentrated screenwash and left it for 10 mins and came back put wipers on and all the ice was cleared :D

I did this to my work van as no one really cares about it :S

.

Yes, totally agree !

I'm not a fan of using warm water all though I think I will be converted now :)

I do see some idiot with a boiling hot kettle pouring it over his windscreen on my drive to work. Feel like pulling over and telling him lol.

But then again I also find that the icier it is the more ******* **** heads that drive up my arse! Had it out with a van driver the other day at a set of lights :D

I'm a scraper, always have been. It only takes a few minutes

and I have the engine running while I do it.

It's not too much of a chore if you have a decent scraper.

I used to use a kettle with warm water when i lived in the West Mids but it's a bit more tricky with where i'm living at the moment, so i just scrape the windscreen if i need to now.

Throw the scraper out and pour warm water on..Much quicker and far more effective

I use a watering can with warm water from the CH tank

Give it a try..Youll never use a scraper again...Honest

Warm water here too, the secret is use enough to actually warm the window rather than just putting enough on to clear the ice.

It helps with de-misting the windows (I must fix that rear door carriage this week)

Hopefully the warm water will be enough to warm the window to defrost the inside as well as the outside on mine!

Sealed the door a couple of weeks ago but seems to be some moisture, hopefully those bags will sort it out for me :)

Gonna do my rear seals, possibly next week, and will stick a dehumidifier in the car for a few days to try and help reduce the ice on the inside, got a new pollen filter.... I also find cleaning and polish the inside of the windows also really helps

I neither scrape or use warm water or de-icer.

I walk down the garden, open my garage door, unlock my furby and then depress my remote door button and drive out.

The seat belt is then clicked into place while the door closes behind me.

Sorry to brag but its ace!!

Will be me this time next year in my new house.... coupled with my heated seats, unbeatable! :giggle:

I use a double garage!!!

Edit:- still just thinking about motorising the door, need to create a side/alterative access point.

I use an ice-scraper and/or de-icer, coz i'm scared to use warm water :giggle:

It would be just my luck that I'd get a crack somewhere....

I use cold water :D. As long as it brings the screen up above freezing it's fine. Some times need second jug if it's really cold.

All you VAG guys need to run a campaign for heated front screens - turn on and it defrosted quicker than you can fill a jug of hot water and carry it out to the :giggle: car
