Well we pulled the dipstick and if you imagine it's split into 3 equal sections from the bottom up low-normal-over mine was about half way between none at all and the very bottom of acceptable/top of low.

It may not be related but then it may be the entire reason.

I think if I am honest I haven't actually pulled the dipstick in the 9 months and 10,000 miles I've owned it.

Ross was on my list of people to call if my tame tech was busy.

Luckily he's off work this week, free every afternoon, and hungry for cash :D

I know I'll now be keeping an eye out for any other cut price turbos too as its saved me a lot of arsing about having it sat there ready, I just hope it's a goodun!

  • To be honest I think I was just unlucky in the kkk turbo lottery. Oil level may not have helped but I don't think it was the cause. Thanks for the offer but after 4 hours this afternoon it lives. IT

  • Secretly your pleased so you can go hybrid fingers crossed for you Cliff

  • It certainly sounds like the issues I had at the Ring' Cliff. When it went it just stalled the engine, though I didn't have any limp mode issues beforehand. No smoke, fault codes or anything, just a c

Hope it all works out for you Cliff

Glad your finally heading the right direction :) don't worry about having. 'A turbo eater' as its just purely chance. Some go some dont. Can't imagine anything different about cars that would make it enjoy eating them lol

Make sure you get all the bits, check that the Intercooler does not show signs of having fragments ingested as these may puncture it or worse, find their way into the engine.

I doubt your oil was that low before it blew, i imagine you will find some of it in your intercooler pipes and in the exhaust. When mine went i had done a 500 mile round trip 2 days before so i checked it before my journey and when i got home to make sure it was ok for the work run. After the turbo went bye bye it was showing about 5mm up the dipstick, but mine did go in an all out fashion though.

Hope its pain free for you and back on the road soon.

There was no oil at all in/on the exhaust propellor so everything was limited to intake side.

Boost pipes were oily but nothing more than they are when normally popped off during services etc.

I think i've come out of a turbo failure incredibly well!

Well maybe there wasnt much oil in the engine then and thats why there is non in the pipes :S

Good luck anyway mate, you drained the remainder of the oil out yet?

  • Author

nope not drained it yet.

will get everythign back together and then do a full oil change.

Is there any reason I shouldn't be buying from Euro Car Parts?

The parts they can supply are half the price of the dealer ones - still £85 worth of parts factoring it all in though :(

Make sure you change the oil pickup pipe too as well Cliff, is that in your parts list? I've never had an issue with ECP, as long as its the branded stuff.

  • Author

yep took the plunge and ordered the bits from ECP and all the bits they don;t do from the dealer.

All in tomorrow ready for fitment tomorrow afternoon.

If that's the pipe which supplies oil to the turbo yes I've gone on of those on my list; mainly as we bent the old one when we took the turbo out :D

Jeepers.

:peek: yeah i know

I did think about it and i did check the level while i was under the bonnet changing the headlight bulbs and it was fine.

Maybe.....or perhaps that was on the red car :S

I'll certainly be checking it more oftern now

Any chance of a link to the oil pipe i cant find one.

I'll certainly be checking it more oftern now

Bad luck mate, hope all is better when you have finished your work tomorrow afternoon! Just been out to check my oil!

How hard exactly were you accelerating? Idea of rev range? Any warning signs or just happened? Worried now, I don't go above 2,500RPM until warm but.....

I just rang the dealer with a long list of bits i needed and they priced it all and faxed (yeah i know!) the quote back across

ETKA has it listed as the very descriptive "oil pipe" - part number 038 145 771 G

number 9 in this image from here

Accelarion was hard but not hard enough to get me told off ;)

However as per earlier in the thread i may have been (pointlessly)giving chase to a mk2 Octy.

Engine was warm. Everything was fine. Then it just stopped.

Felt like limp mode as the turbo just stopped boosting (as it does when it disintergrates!) the boost in the system was enough to keep it running until i tried to turn it off and back on again which dropped pressure and locked it solid.

Having the two cars gives me easy comparisons and the black car had been making strange noises for a while, generally noticable in traffic when idling, a bit of throttle stopped it or a spike of revs would stop it at idle for a few seconds.

I had it down as a knackered idler which i'd change at the next service however speculation is that noise may have been the turbo with low oil levels. The revs would up pressure stopping the noise until it dropped again.

Who knows really.

So your getting the oil pickup pipe from the dealer not ecp?

  • Author

correct - i rang ECP and they said "uh sorry if it's not on the website we can't supply it"

Shopping list is as follows:

inlet manifold gasket - dealer

Exhaust manifold gasket - ECP

turbo->downpipe gasket - ECP

Turbo->EGR gasket - ECP

Oil return gasket - dealer

Oil return pipe - dealer

Oil filter - ECP

Sump plug - ECP

new exhaust nuts - dealer

air filter - ECP

pollen filter - ECP

fuel filter - ECP

Obviously fuel air and pollen filters aren't essential to getting it back up and running but might as well do a full service while we are there.

I also already have 5 litres of Quantum oil in the garage so no need to put that in the trolley.

Oh!

Yeah, I did see the bit about the Mk2 Octy! LOL!

What kind of noise are we talking about? I'm getting paranoid now! Really REALLY cannot afford my gal to be off the road for even 1 day!

  • Author

Just a noise - i dunno how to describe it - not a whistle - not a grinding noise - not a rattle - yet all 3 of those at the same time.

It'd have to be off the road for a day even if that day was to fit a replacement turbo ;)

I had mine go with a bang (sounded like a boost pipe had popped off completely) going up hill! Total loss of power, smoke,

It then started to run on its own ingested oil, revving even more higher. Luckily I managed to pull into a pub carpark of the busy highway (a417!) which was in a dip, but the carpark was up a hill - luckily I stalled the engine. Called AA - told him not to even attempt to start the engine!

When i got it home and took it apart, the boost pipes were full of oil :(

Do you need any help fitting the turbo?

sorry to hear about your turbo pastyboy, looked kind of messy, all the vanes smashed up, hope you get the car back on the road soon. got me paranoid now about noises for the turbo. i have checked my oil level yesterday and its up the top of the max mark.

Thanks for the offer but after 4 hours this afternoon it lives. IT LIVES! IT LIIIIIVVVVVEEESSS!!!!!

We Took all the boost pipes and intercooler off and flushed them completely removing everything from tiny impeller filings, to shards, to chunks the size of a 5p. I reckon an entire vane stayed together and fired down the pipe work :D

Have run it up the road and back and all seems fine bar an EML light on the dash which I think was caused the putting the ignition on while everything was unplugged.

It'll get an easy run on my 7 mile traffic filled commute before being handed over to my tame racing driver, I mean mrs pasty, for her 30 mile dual carriage way commute.

Hopefully this turbo although already 60k old will be more lucky than the last one (and potentially the one before that too!)

I don't want to jinx it but as said earlier in the thread I think we've come off reasonably well.

A complete replacement of turbo and full service for under £500.

Now to source another spare turbo for when the red one goes.

Although that said with a PD130 housing now sat around doing nothing it seems almost rude not to send it off for hybrid-ising ;)

great news. you wont get the kkk hybridisd but pm joshh he knows a place that will take it for a garret.
