DRLs being confused as Fogs

Featured Replies

Given these cars are almost unknown in Australia, I need something to alert people that this is not just a small, slow ladies' car. I still get Getzes, Jazzes and Swifts (not the Sports variant) wanting to tango, which is just embarrassing for all involved.

  • put your high beams on that annoys them greatly

  • It's only people with cars that don't have drl's that flash you, they need to get newer cars and realise this feature is cool.

  • I agree with this too. People think your lights are too brightthen BAM! Have that!!

Have to say having just recently taken the vRS on as my daily driver i'm experiencing this more than i have expected to; its without doubt more people putting their rear fogs on than being flashed by oncomming traffic.

I tend to flash them quickly then v quickly if they are frustrating me enough (no more than a second or two) turn my lights off and back on again just to demonstrate how the lights function; also has the knockon effect of showing them how much brighter the DRLs are, the Xenon light effect as it were.

I have to say though its not their placement thats at fault, more how they operate. Skoda should have wired up the normal sidelights and got the existing DRLs to have functioned as fogs/cornering lights for use with dipped beam, bit of an oversight on their part i feel

My vRS gets flashed fairly regularly by on coming cars who think I've got fog lights on. It doesn't worry me and at least I've been noticed. Some geezer also wrote a letter to the local paper a few weeks back complaining about the increasing number of cars he sees driving in broad daylight with fog lights on. I guess it will take a few more years before Mr Grumpy learns about DRLs.

I think people can understand the DRL's.

The same lights then being slightly less bright

& becoming Side Lights or a single Parking light is almost inexcusable IMO.

Even i get bugged at seeing a vRS with them on, & i know what they actually are.

As in my other posts, an Embarrassing design..IMHO.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just been forwarded this thread (thanks George) and I am having terrible problems with being flashed at by other drivers. I had to stop my car to check it was ok once as I got flashed about 4 times in one short journey. I just flash back now assuming people are being friendly. I don't find other cars with daylight driving lights offensive at all so I don't see the problem, lots of cars have them and they should be fitted on silver cars as standard (these seem to the be main offenders for driving on motorways in thick spray with no lights on).

I have the DRL's switched off permanently.

& drive with the Dipped Beam, & sidelights front and rear on.

You could just drive with sidelights on during the day, then have front and rear lights showing,

the front still looks like DRL's, just not so annoying to other drivers as MK2 vRS DRL's.

george

Cops stop me every once in a while thinking I have my fogs on, which is forbidden in Serbia when there is no fog, and the ticket is about 30 quid. Then every time I have to go out and explain what is it.

I reduced the idiot flash by replacing the incandescent bulbs with LEDs. A lot of the idiots recognise the bright white colour of the LEDs as DRLs but fail to understand when it is a normal bulb

vRS Sidelights are just wrong right out of the factory. JMO.

Stupidly bright as DRL's and still so, when dimmer as Side/parking lights.

george

I put hid bulbs in my fogs and have them on pretty much all the time during the day.

That's just how I roll...

You are just lucky to have fogs to that to.

Do you ever go the full hog and use Full Beam all the time?

We just get to annoy other road users with the DRL's or sidelights.

Or we can use full beam and not dip when meeting on coming traffic.

Only if the oncoming driver is doing it... Will be getting some brighter full beam bulbs soon, to add to the effect...

I have been parked up waiting quite often at Supermarkets in the last week.

Interesting watching all these VW's parking, they arrive with Fog Lights on & as they try to reverse into parking places the new game for my Grand Children is how often one or other fog lights go on and off as they attempt to reverse into a space..

It must be the case that these reversers in, are the type that find it hard to get set up to drive in front first.

(We are simple country people, easily amused.)

i can understand all this during dark hours as youve no idea what cars behind you and just see what you think to be fog lights on, id also be annoyed if i were them, its the daytime idiots i fear for. from my limited time as a car user (22 years or so) ive yet to come across a car that can have fogs on without the use of at least the side lights so why do these daytime flashing warriors not know this

usually i just give a wave back and big grin, stupid people seems to appreciate this....not.

its the few who drive in a manner which i think is just plain dangerous, like slamming the brakes on for no reason trying to cause an accident. idiots like this will never learn and clearly shouldnt be allowed out on their own

as i motorbike rider i know the importance of being seen and the few idiots who hate drl's and such will never make me knock mine off

You see, as a Motorcyclist that was riding with lights on but was knocked off his bike and lost his leg because of a car driver not looking, but still flashing an indicator, then just continuing even when it was not safe to do so,

i look at this differently.

Car drivers that have lights on because they come on automatically, do not necessarily know what lights they have on.

They very often have no rear lights on even in adverse light or weather conditions.

The kind that have Cornering light that come on or go off as the maneuver do not necessarily know what they are doing or are even aware what is around them.

Even those that indicate may not have looked or see what is around, used their mirrors or any degree of common road courtesy or safe driving.

that includes not even spotting Motorbikes riding with DRL's on.

When on a bike its best IME to just assume they have not seen you,

& now with drivers without a clue what their light do are are for,

i do the same in any vehicle.

george

maybe the answer is to make every car driver ride a bike for a week, deffo made me look more than once when im doing anything

I put hid bulbs in my fogs and have them on pretty much all the time during the day.

So you don't care about the Law then, about only using FOG lights in FOG?

I think he's being sarcastic

OK. Trouble is sarcasm doesn't work very well on a Forum.

Apols.

I'd flash you vicky if I saw you driving by lol

Haha, I only drive with fog lights on in the early morning, when my windscreen is fogged up.

I have to admit that I've always struggled with the DRL thing? Educate me. What is the point of them?

If it's a bit gloomy and want to make sure you're seen then you put sidelights on.

If its *really* foggy and you can't find the edges of the road just with dipped beams then you have front fogs to turn on.

Where do DRLs fit into the picture? Surely there's more to it than just decoration. What have I missed?

Fabia mk2 vRS do not have Fog Lights. Or the option of having them.

Unlike on the Monte Carlo, & other Fabias with Sidelights and DRL's and Fog lights,

Skoda fitted DRL's where Fog or Driving lights might be on most cars.

These then become the Sidelights when the Headlights or sidelights are switched on by the driver.

(less bright, but still often mistaken for something other than sidelights.)

Hense other drivers confusion and annoyance.

There is a Sticky at the top of this section that explains the vRS DRL's

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/193054-vrs-drls

Mk2 Fabias were EU Type Approved before 2011 and did not require DRL's to be fitted as standard by EU regulations.

There is no current UK Law that requires you to have DRL's on during the day, even if they are fitted to the vehicle as standard or for them to work..

The funny thing is that there fabia owners manual says not to use just the sidelights, they're only really parking lights.
