Washing the car

Featured Replies

Reading most topics on here I get the feeling that most contributors are enthusiasts when it comes to their cars.

Yesterday morning brought the SE of the UK a sunny day and I found myself out there cleaning the car. Once finished it gleamed outside and was free of kids shoe prints on the backs of seats and rubbish under the back seats and I found myself very satisfied.

My car gets cleaned every other week. Is there anyone else in this group who look after their cars like this??

It was drilled into me as I grew up that you looked after your car, washed it, serviced it and it would not let you down. My father has a 12 year old 318 BMW that his local dealer reckons they could pass of as new. It has never let him down so there must be something in looking after our cars.

I wash mine at least once a week. In winter get about two or three with all salt that gathers on it.

Everyweekend it gets washed, wheels cleaned, dried,

Interior hoovered, glass cleaned, plastics cleaned and wiped over with einszett cockpit premium.

Last washes my car about 6 weeks ago even then I didn't wash it i paid to have it valeted lol. Work 6 days a week just can't be bothered on my one and only day off to wash the car. It's kept quite clean inside and the exterior is heavily waxed with auto glym hd wax for some protection so i do try to look after it.

Ill wash it next Tuesday I'm off work then lol

My missus thinks I'm mad the amount of times I wash and polish my car. Gets washed at least twice a week and polished once a month. Even the dealer commented how clean it was when it was in for a service. Wash in the back of the wheels everytime as well and clean out the wheel arches.

I try to wash weekly however it's difficult to do when its chucking it down with rain! But even in drizzle I will go and give it a wash and a rinse, and hoover in between the showers!

I washed and waxed mine last night while it was getting dark...and then I managed to put everything away and BOOM came the thunder and then it chucked it down with rain and hail.... :(

At least the beading looked good!

I used to wash my cars religiously at least every week, with a decent polish etc once a month, however that was many years ago before I started working silly shifts and had a family and all the extra demands on my time that those bring. (Not helped that I rarely get a weekend off and the wife mainly uses the car during the day/week.) The past 2/3 cars have had their washes done by the local Polish handwash place just up the road - not brilliant but for £5 and no harsh brushes it does the job - especially during winter months.

I do like spending the time properly washing, waxing the car etc, and I always get "hand on" on any car that I buy as it helps you get to see if there are any faults or slight dings that you hadn't been aware of.

You all make me feel like I am being lazy.

I did 23 years of shift work and as ex wife wasn't around to bitch I used to wash it at least every week.

My wife (new model) doesn't mind as she happily spends hours at the stables with her horse (and gets her car cleaned as well)

Washed my car last weekend. Couldn't be bothered this week. It's filthy.

I really need to sort out a hose at home

I'm not aware of the rules and regulations in UK - do you guys just was the car on your driveway/street? Or everyone has a warm garage to do it in in the winter? Just asking, curious :)

I wash mine on my driveway if its above 0 deg lol

I wash mine as soon as its dirty

That could be every day or every other day

Weather permitting

My missus thinks I'm mad the amount of times I wash and polish my car. Gets washed at least twice a week and polished once a month

Polished once a month? With what products? Or are we talking wax here?

He will mean wax Steve

Some people use the word 'polishing' to mean the process of making the car shine without actually polishing

I do hope so! Otherwise there won't be much clearcoat left :)

I've washed my new Skoda every week since I got it (4 weeks ago). My track record on previous cars was terrible. "This is different" I tell myself. I joined DW and have spent £300 since on products. I had it professionally detailed when I bought it and washing has been a pleasure so far.

Last week I citrus pre-washed and rinsed only and it looked 95% clean which I reckon is good enough when it's circa 0c outside.

i've had the car nearly a year so its due a wash soon

You don;t have to spend a fortune.

Decent shampoo.

Decent wax

I also use Autoglym super resin polish a couple of times a year. In fact all the above are Autoglym products.

I hate seeing my car dirty, so I wash it as often as the weather allows me. Washed and waxed last week, but now filthy due to being stuck behind a petrol tanker today throwing up spray and muck from the road. Always use Autolglym products.

I used to wash it every two weeks in summer and every week in winter. That was before the babby came along and now I'm lucky if I can wash the car every other month. Winter is doubly bad since only the weekends are light.

But I agree a car is too expensive a thing to buy then not look after. I really don't understand people who can spend £30 on a car then treat it like a mobile skip.

It was drilled into me as I grew up that you looked after your car, washed it, serviced it and it would not let you down.

I remember my dad doing the same in the 'good old days' only to find that whilst the paintwork was shiney, the 'Rusty-Worms' had eaten their way through from inside the wings/sills/door-bottoms/etc....

As far as I'm concerned our Octavia gets washed when it rains, but I do try to keep the interior clean & the glass/lights/registration plates clear.

Plus, I will clean the brake-dust/road-dirt off the alloys, as I don't want them corroding before their time is due

In days gone by, my Discovery ( & its replacement 110 County) were the same, with just an underbody/chassis clean at MoT test time

I've only had mine 2 months so it gets washed after it rains rather than gets washed when it rains! I have a full set of AG products from shampoo upwards (well I will after father christmas has been and bought me a clay detailing kit and high dev cleanser so I'm well prepared for the next waxing). Perhaps I'm a sad s*d but I find it quite refreshing to see my efforts produce a positive result and a nice clean car, even if I'm back to square 1 after I next take it out.....

Once a week for me. Difficult in this weather but a nice warm dry workshop helps so I can dry it off after and get a Hoover. Polished once a month.

What do you guys use to clean your cars? Looking at snow foam or similar methods - anyone got any experience with good products?

car gets washed everyday ( two bucket system ) , have hired a guy for it  . Every sunday interiors are cleaned and post that i apply Eagle nanowax and formula one tyre shiner . Pressure wash is done every month .
