Does anyone know if the dealers have a margin on metallic paint?

Featured Replies

Hi,

don't know if this is the right place for this thread, but I am looking at a Fabia...

Got a quote I am happy with and going ahead this week - want to know if I can pick up metallic paint for a reasonable premium. VAT free it's £412.50 which is about £12/ month over 41. How much can I shave from that do you reckon?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Ask the dealer to throw it in with the price. If they object tell them "Okay, I'll find another dealer that will" and walk away.

I could... but I have already screwed him down far below anyone else, don't know if he has the wriggle room left.

They always have a little more to play with..Honest!!

Agree, just give them the option and then try somewhere else if a no answer, the worst they can do is say just that!

Just to add a little more pain to it - apparently metallic paint is actually cheaper than solid for the OEMs to use, just seen as a luxury item compared to solid and historically therefore has always been a chargeable extra with a lot more colour options!

say to the dealer you want it in so and so colour, don't say you want metallic.

Not sure I can agree with the above. As far as I am aware, metallics require more coats to be applied with greater precision, hence the higher cost.

Thanks guys.

I am going to just give him the spec I want and what I am willing to pay, and if he can't, I will find someone else.

I worked at Ford for over 3 years. On Ford we had 10% margin in nearly all options added to the car including metallic paint.

That's only when compared to some solid colours such as black and it's not by much. Metallic paint is virtually always more expensive to buy because of the stuff in it, and also to apply due as XK140 mentions, the extra coats and extra work involved to apply it. Black also requires this extra work and care. I recently went to a well known european car factory for a guided tour as part of my work. Paint was one of the things we discussed at length for our project. It's a really complicated subject that surprised me. Not straight forward as you would expect. The type and colour of paint you choose can add loads to the cost of the car. Manufacturers level that cost across the range, absorbing the cost at the oem stage by some on one colour, and making a bit on other colours. That applies to solid and metallic. Red solid paint is one of the most complex paints to make and apply, and is the most easily damaged by airborne contaminates due to the type of pigments used in it. Good idea to use a good sealant such as Supagard on solid reds. Must agree, it's well worth bartering for as much off metallic as you can get. I have had metallic thrown in for nowt in the past. Good luck with that Reubiedoo.

My blackline in race blue should have costed about 400 squid extra they included it F.O.C dealers will give you the options free if they want the sale. I also had a load of other stuff for free and screwed them down on the price.
